Walter Koch, helped needy kids

Walter H. Koch, longtime administrator of Holly Hill Children's Home in California, Kentucky, and a founder of Camp Sunshine in California, died Thursday at the Baptist Con valescent Center in Newport. He was 93.

Mr. Koch's parents died when he was young and he grew up at Holly Hill, which was then called the Campbell County Children's Home, said his niece, Nancy Bay of Cold Spring.

He left at age 16 to become a carpenter. In the 1930s he became active in the Campbell County Sunday School Association and used his carpentry skills to help plan a summer camp to teach underprivileged children Christian values. He helped clear the land and build cabins, said his brother-in-law, Bill Brinkmann of Fort Thomas.

The camp remained a pas sion throughout Mr. Koch's life.

He joined the Navy as a Seabee and spent three years on Guadalcanal. When he returned in 1945, he resumed work as a carpenter. Two years later he was asked to take the helm of the children's home, which had been renamed Holly Hill.

He and his wife, Zella, didn't have children of their own, but they became parents to every child in the home, said Mrs. Bay.

"Those kids were their kids. They called them Mom and Dad," she said. "He was a wonderful parent. I've heard a lot of the kids say, 'Without Dad, I wouldn't be the person I am today.' He believed every body deserved a chance. He taught me not to judge people by what they have or how they look, but by what's inside of them."

Mr. and Mrs. Koch ran Hol ly Hill from 1947 to 1973, when they retired and built a house in Cold Spring. They had annual picnics for all of "their" children.

After Zella died in 1993, a young woman who grew up in the home took over the picnics. Mr. Koch was always there.

Mr. Koch was a former treasurer and building inspector for the city of Cold Spring; a member of Asbury Methodist Church, Newport; treasurer of the Junior Order Twin City Council No. 9 in Newport; a member of the Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club and the Carpenter's Union No. 698; and a veteran of the Navy Reserve.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at noon Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the Funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Camp Sunshine, Route 3, California, Kentucky 41007; or Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Kentucky 41071.
