Peggy Freshney, teacher and prolific letter writer

Peggy Freshney, a retired music and elementary school teacher, was well-known as a prolific letter writer.

Her letters were thick missives packed with family history, plays on words, jokes and pronouncements on the state of the world. She hated smoking, drinking and foul language and had a particular reverence for the proper use of the English language.

If a reporter used the word "kid" to mean a child, he could expect a letter from Peggy Freshney.

Ms. Freshney, 74, of Park Hills, died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.

A former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Park Hills, she often included hand-written references to Bible verses on the envelopes bearing her letters. Even when the letters criticized, they carried a joyful tone and a celebration of God's love and the intricacies of the English language.

Ms. Freshney, a Taylor Mill native, spent her career with Kenton County Schools and Park Hills Elementary School. She enjoyed children and loved music. "She loved teaching the basics," said her brother, William K. Freshney of Baton Rouge, La.

In her letters Ms. Freshney often wrote about growing up in a close family. Her letters spoke of family dinners and tales told and told again about visiting aunts and cousins.

Ms. Freshney also was an animal lover whose little dogs were constant companions on solitary walks.

Her brother is her only immediate survivor.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
