Catherine Louise Welzel, 80, of Ryland Heights, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and the church's United Methodist Women Ruth Circle.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Welzel; daughters, Diana Hargreaves of Roswell, Ga., Karen Sampson of Cincinnati and Betty Atherton of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; brothers, Tony Struewing and Jack Struewing, both of Edgewood; and five grandchildren.

Eunice Boone Wright, 85, of Worthville, died Monday at Owenton Manor Nursing Home. She was a homemaker and a member of Mussell Shoals Baptist Church. A son, Marvin "Eddie" Wright, and a daughter, Nellie Jane Wright, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Wright; sons, Thurman Thomas Wright of Warsaw, Jerry Wright, Ralph Wright and Moochie Wright, all of Owen County; a daughter, Brenda Sue Howard of Worthville; brothers, Edgar Boone, Robert Boone, Austin Boone and L. Virgie Fischer, parish activist
When people talk about Virgie Fischer one word keeps popping up: dedication.
Dedication to her parish and Catholic faith. Dedication to her community through political work. And, most importantly, dedication to her husband and six children.
"She always taught us to stick with your beliefs and live with them every day," said her son, Patrick Fischer of Cincinnati.
Virgie Kottman Fischer, 76, of Ft. Thomas, died at 1:21 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a legal secretary with the Law Offices of Lorimer Scott, as well as Bertelsman and Bertelsman Law Firm in Newport, and a former legal secretary and deputy master commissioner of Campbell County. She also was a former member of the Campbell County Board of Elections and the Campbell County Republican Party Executive Committee.
Her husband, Thomas A. Fischer, died in 1989.
Fischer said his mother was especially active as a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Ft. Thomas, where she participated in almost every ministry throughout her 47 years in the parish.
She also was a member of the Siena Seniors and the Fort Thomas Women's Club. And she was a volunteer with the Brighton Center, Habitat for Humanity, Madonna House and St. Luke Hospitals.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mary Jeanne Clark of Libertyville, Ill.; sons, Thomas J. Fischer, of Cincinnati, Joseph M. Fischer and Timothy J. Fischer, both of Fort Thomas, and John C. Fischer of Dayton; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
The family will receive friends in the church undercroft immediately following Mass. Mrs. Fischer bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Donald Nusbaum, raced, sold cars
Donald Joseph Nusbaum was a pioneering NASCAR driver who looked forward to the opening this weekend of the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.
But Mr. Nusbaum, 76, of Union, died at 4:34 p.m. Tuesday a St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired vice president and general manager of Bennett Ford in Cincinnati and a race car driver with NASCAR in the 1950s.
"He was quiet, but he liked to talk about his races," said his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Nusbaum. "And he was a good father. His kids were his life." He also was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Nusbaum was born
in Fort Wayne, Ind., and spent most of the past 33 years living in Northern Kentucky.
He raced all over the Midwest and won in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Ohio and Florence.
Once he was trapped in a burning race car, his wife said.
"He told God he wouldn't race again if he let him live," Ms. Nusbaum said. "Well, he did race again, under an assumed name."
Mr. Nusbaum taught his children about cars and several make their living from the automotive industry, Mrs. Nusbaum said.
"He was very honest and never did a job that wasn't right," Mrs. Nusbaum said. "He was very well-loved and respected."
Other survivors include his sons, Da vid Nusbaum of Independence, Jeff Nusbaum and John Nusbaum, both of Daytona Beach, Fla.; daughters, Cynthia Anderson of Cincinnati and Mitzi Warren of Daytona Beach; brothers, Robert, James, Kenneth and Steven Nusbaum, all of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a sister, Mary Ellen Sieling of California.
He also had 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Mary Elizabeth Casey, 88, of Latonia, died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. She was a homemaker, a member of Latonia Baptist Church and a Pink Lady with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She also was a member of Rosebud Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband, Delbert B. Casey, died in 1967. A daughter, Mary Jane Poate, died in 1996.

Patricia Eileen Gordon, 63, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence. She also was a member of the Lyons Club and the Apple Annies Dance Club.

Ramona Judy Holmes, 61, of Burlington, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Her husband, Harry Holmes, died in 1994.

Gene Oliver Jennings, 74, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a licensed practical nurse with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North and Rosedale Manor in Latonia. Her husband, Whitley S. Oliver, died March 13.

Louise K. Kaegi, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a secretary and operator with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a member of First Baptist Church of Cold Spring.
She also was a longtime Sunday school teacher with First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas, and a member of the Women's Missionary Union at both churches. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Girl Scouts of America. Her husband, John F. Kaegi, died in 1992.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Conrad Kaltenbach of Fort Thomas; and sisters, Virginia Johnson and JoAnn Schneider, both of Wilder.

Hallie Irene Lusby, 87, of Owenton, died Tuesday at her home. She was a farmer, an employee of General Lamp and Ball Brothers in Muncie, Ind., and a member of Richland Baptist Church, Owen County. Her husband, Heber Lusby, preceded her in death.

J. Harold Parks, 54, of Owenton, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Vincentia Rettig
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Vincentia Rettig, 88, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. She was a former assistant director of nursing at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, Catholic Nurses Association, the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and the Western Interstate Council on Higher Education in Nursing.
Sister Rettig also was a past president of the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners and the Nursing Education section of the Ohio College Association.
She was a former director of nursing with Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo., and Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. She also was a former assistant administrator of nursing with Wayne State University in Detroit.
In 1986, the College of Mount St. Joseph created the Sister Vincentia Award to honor achievement in nursing.
Survivors include brothers, Vincent Rettig of Fort Mitch ell and George Rettig of Fort Wright; a sister, Genevieve Boehm of St. Bernard, Ohio; nieces and nephews.

Wayne Shake, 51, of Florence, died Monday at Baptist Hospital East, Louisville. He was a truck driver with Gulf South Medical Supply, a member of the Zoneton and Shepherdsville volunteer fire departments, and attended Florence Christian Church.

Devoda Ward, 80, of Crittenden, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of White Dove Baptist Church, Lawrenceville. Her husband, Joe Ward Sr., died in 1983. A son, Joe Ward Jr., and a daughter, Geneva Bennett, also preceded her in death.

Donald Hudson, activist
tried to help mentally ill
It's a cruel irony that the mentally ill most in need of empathy and understanding are often the least likely to get it. As a paranoid schizophrenic, Donald Lee Hudson knew that better than most. That's why he did more to help others with mental illness find companionship and acceptance.
Mr. Hudson, 52, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice, Covington.
After being diagnosed early in life as a paranoid schizophrenic, Mr. Hudson devoted many hours to the interests of the mentally ill in Northern Kentucky. He founded the Friendship Club, a social organization for the mentally ill. He was on the board of directors of the Mental Health Association of Northern Kentucky, as well as Comprehensive Care, which is now known as North Key.
Last year Mr. Hudson received the Clifford Beers Award for a mental health services consumer who has helped improve the quality of life for fellow consumers. He was also a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
He was a member of St. Henry Church, and he volunteered at St. Luke Hospital and St. Elizabeth Medical Center bingo games.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Christy Hudson; sisters, Marie Agnes White of Louisville, Janice Ann Watt of San Antonio, Texas, Deborah Hudson-Soto of Rockwall, Texas, Sharon Lynn Hudson of St. Louis, Mo., and Sheila Kaye Hudson of Southgate; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum.

Virginia Lee Budke, 75, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a retired shipping department secretary for Wadsworth Electric Co., Covington.

Ruth R. Cobb, 80, of Fort Pierce, Fla., formerly of Dry Ridge, died Monday in Fort Pierce. She was the former owner of Cobb's store, Dry Ridge, a former employee of Milt's Flower Shop in Dry Ridge and a former bookkeeper for Dry Ridge Auto Company.
She was a member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church. Her husband, Harry D. Cobb, preceded her in death.
