Elva Davis, Covington caterer

With her love of cooking, her zeal for meeting new people and new experiences, it w as only a matter of time until Elva Christina Davis would go into the catering business.

But Mrs. Davis started out in another business - a small grocery she and her her husband, Gordon, opened around 1960 on Parkway Avenue in Covington.

The Davis Catering Co. in Covington, which came later, was a happy accident.

"Mother was a wonderful cook, and a friend asked her to cater her daughter's wedding," explained one of Mrs. Davis' daughters, Diana Dawson of Villa Hills. "That was their first catering job. They started slow, and became one of the best-known caterers in Cincinnati."

Mrs. Davis, 89, of Hebron, died at 5:45 a.m. Monday at Florence Park Care Center.

The Davis Catering Co. took off from that first wedding, and quickly became a thriving business fueled by Mrs. Davis' cooking and enthusiasm.

"She was very outgoing, wasn't afraid to try anything," said Mrs. Dawson. "She loved dealing with people and made a lot of nice friends because of the business."

Davis Catering became a staple of Greater Cincinnati weddings, society affairs and museum events. Mr. and Mrs. Davis retired in 1972, and enjoyed a long retirement together. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Mrs. Dawson and her husband took over the family business when her parents retired. Since then, the company has purchased the Cincinnati Club and continues to grow.

With so many memories of her mother working in the kitchen, Mrs. Dawson said her mother should best be remembered because of her moxie.

"When you consider how she built the business, coming from nothing, it truly is remarkable," said Mrs. Dawson.

Mrs. Davis was a member of Bullittsville Christian Church.

Her husband survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Pat Bell of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Helen Coates of Cynthiana; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Lillian Irene Askins, 51, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 8 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker.
