Julius "Cabbage' Lonaker Jr., ran Falmouth restaurant, owned pool hall

About everybody who shot a game of pool or grabbed a quick bite of food in Falmouth knew Julius "Cabbage" Lonaker Jr.

Mr. Lonaker, 86, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

He was a restaurateur and a retired employee of Fisher's Restaurant, Falmouth.

Mr. Lonaker cooked at Fisher's when it was part of a complex which also included a motel. In later years he was night clerk at the motel, said his son, Glendon Lonaker of Falmouth.

Mr. Lonaker also operated the Falmouth Chili Parlor in the downtown area for a number of years, his son said, and he was the proprietor of the billiard hall.

People around Falmouth always knew Mr. Lonaker as "Cabbage," a nickname dating back to his youth, his son said. "As I understand it, he and some friends were around a filling station when a truckload of cabbage came in. They made a bet on who could eat the most raw cab bage, and my father won," said Glendon Lonaker.

His father liked fishing, swimming and gardening, the younger Lonaker said. "He liked to fish, but he really loved swimming in both forks of the Licking River. He fished on a trot line and I can remember as a small child him having some big catfish in a tub. He also loved to grow things in his garden," said Mr. Lonaker's son.

Mr. Lonaker was a member of Falmouth United Methodist Church.

Other survivors include his wife, Goldie Hopper Lonaker; son, Roger Lonaker, also of Falmouth; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to the church, Shelby Street, Falmouth 41040.
