Raymond Durr, served Kenton schools

Raymond Durr made a great many friends while behind the wheel of a school bus.

Mr. Durr, 84, of Morning View, died Friday in Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

For some 25 years, Mr. Durr drove a bus for the Kenton County Schools, and between morning and evening trips, he worked as a mechanic in the bus garage.

"He would make his morning run, work on the buses during the day, and then make his route that afternoon," said Mr. Durr's daughter, Mildred Wolfe.

Many of the youngsters who rode his bus came to his farms and worked during the summer, Mrs. Wolfe said. Mr. Durr farmed more than 100 acres in southern Kenton County, raising tobacco, hay and at various times, both dairy and beef cattle.

The association with the Kenton County Schools was a family attachment for Mr. Durr. His late wife, Buelah, was cafeteria manager at Piner School, and Mrs. Wolfe has taught at the school for many years. Mr. Durr retired from the schools in 1979. Mrs. Durr died in 1994.

Mr. Durr was a member and Past Master of Wilmington Masonic Lodge, Fiskburg, and a member of Wilmington Baptist Church in Fiskburg.

In his younger days Mr. Durr and his late brother, Thomas, often played music at social events in the area, Mrs. Wolfe said. "He never liked to go far from home, but he enjoyed playing music," she said.

Instruments Mr. Durr played included the banjo and guitar, his daughter said.

Survivors also include two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Burial will be in Wilmington Cemetery, Fiskburg. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Masonic lodge.
