Flora Rowe Hylton, of Ashcamp, Kentucky, died at 11:47 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Justice Funeral Services, Justice Chapel, with ministers Richard Gibson, Edgar Sanders and others officiating.

Minnie Skeens
Minnie Skeens, 94, of Red Jacket, formerly of Ransom, Kentucky, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002 at the Appalachian Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born Sept. 10, 1907 in McVeigh, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Anderson and Oma (West) Smith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Tom Skeens; sons Miles, James, Roy and Darius Skeens; daughter Irene Skeens; brothers Leonard and Dewey Smith; four grandchildren; and several sisters.

Mrs. Skeens was a homemaker and member of the Bluesprings Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Don (Madeline) Skeens of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and William (Nell) Skeens of Piqua, Ohio; daughters Sue (Clarence) Hatfield of Red Jacket, Florence (Chas) Whitcomb of Coshocton, Ohio, Dorothy (Monty) Goble of Ypsilanti, Mich., Mabeline (Don) Hurley of Ransom, Kentucky, and Viola Sowers of Piqua, Ohio; 25 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Buddy Kendrick officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky

Pallbearers will be grandsons Dusty Stacy and Kyle Smith.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and anytime Tuesday with services at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Kentucky

Loretta Phillips
Loretta "Tina" Phillips, 56, of Louisa, Kentucky, formerly of Ransom, Kentucky, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky

Rev. Clarence Booth
Rev. Clarence C. Booth, 91, of Ragland, W.V., passed away Aug. 15, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 7, 1911 at Lovely, Kentucky, he was a son of the late John Morgan and Lassie Morgan Booth. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ida Mae Booth.

He was a minister of the Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Booth; two sons, Tom C. Booth of Atlanta, Ga., and John M. Booth of Louisville, Kentucky; two stepsons, William Basil McCoy of Marion, Ohio, and Joe McCoy of Owensboro, Kentucky; one stepdaughter, Patricia Pepper of Manassas, Va.; one brother, Shelby Booth of Hode, Kentucky; three sisters, Audry Triplett and Jean Small of Warfield, Kentucky, and Louise Cooper of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield Chapel, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, with the Rev. Lewis Hall Jr. officiating.

Visitation will be at the Chafin Funeral Home on Friday from 6-9 p.m., and at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield Chapel, on Saturday from 6-9 p.m.

Burial will follow in the Warfield cemetery, Warfield, Kentucky

Ocie Dotson
Ocie A. Dotson, 80, of Stopover, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born March 10, 1922 at Phelps, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Zettie Raines.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Dotson; one son, Charles Dotson; and several brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Dotson was a homemaker and member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include daughters Leoda (Dodge) Coleman of Stopover, Kentucky, Nancy Coleman of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Judy (Grover) Sheppard of Whitman, Betty (Billy) Bartram of Alum Creek; son Roger (Kay) Dotson of Stopover, Kentucky; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at the Shepard Memorial Presbyterian Church at Stopover, Kentucky

Burial will follow in the Dotson cemetery at Phelps, Kentucky

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Shepard Memorial Presbyterian Church. Visitation will also be held Thursday, Aug. 8, beginning at 6 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services.

Dorothy Huffman
Dorothy Maye Standifur Huffman, 71, of Ashcamp, Kentucky, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at Pikeville (Kentucky) Methodist Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Hylton Freewill Baptist Church, Ashcamp, Kentucky

Burial will follow in the Childers cemetery, Ashcamp, Kentucky

Visitation began after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Dorothy Maynard
Dorothy Mae McCoy Maynard, 77, of Lovely, Kentucky, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002 at her residence.

Born July 14, 1925 in Martin County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Barney and Rebecca McCoy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Maynard; three sons, John, David and Bobby Ray Maynard; and two daughters, Bonnie and Joyce Maynard.

Mrs. Maynard was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, James Ronald Maynard of Waverly, Ohio; daughters Katheleen Mills of Beauty, Kentucky, Lucille Dials and Francis Moore, both of Lovely, Kentucky, Betty Maynard and Connie Maynard, both of Dunlow; 36 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Warfield (Kentucky) Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with James Russell Maynard officiating.

Burial will follow in the Maynard cemetery, Beauty, Kentucky

Visitation will be Friday and Saturday at the Warfield Chapel beginning at 5 p.m.

Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home is in charge.

Woodrow New
Woodrow New, 81, of North Matewan, W.V., formerly of Majestic, Kentucky, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born Nov. 14, 1920, he was a son of the late Willie New and Polly Prater New.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ivory Maynard New; a son, Glenn New; brothers John and William New; and a sister, Lena Hardin.

A retired coal miner, Mr. New was a member of the Church of Christ faith. He was a disabled veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise New; a son, Woodrow (Billie Jean) New of Majestic, Kentucky; daughters, Earnestine (Wayne) Gentry of Cooksville, Tenn., Shirley (Dan) Clark, Claris (Don) Wilson and Betty (Dan) Buschur, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; stepchildren, Bradley (Debbie) Casey of Kimper, Kentucky, Willie (Margaret) Casey of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, Phyllis J. (Oliver) Harris of N. Matewan, Patricia Ann (Jessie) Dotson of Phelps, Kentucky, Danny Ray Casey of McCarr, Kentucky, and Randal (Penny) Casey of Freeburn, Kentucky; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at Chambers Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in the New Family cemetery at Chapman Fork, Majestic, Kentucky

DAV Chapter 141 will conduct military services at the gravesite.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Home Inc.

M. Carolyn McNamee
M. Carolyn McNamee, 56, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at Pikeville Methodist Hospital.

Born Jan. 25, 1946 in Xenia, Ohio, she was the daughter of Mary Margie Brewer Reeves and Sherman Reeves of Xenia, Ohio.

A registered nurse, Mrs. McNamee was affiliated with the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar Society, volunteer at the cancer center, a hospice volunteer and member of the Quilt Guild.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Gerald Thomas McNamee; five sons, Patrick McNamee of Allen, Christopher McNamee of Pikeville, Timothy McNamee of Williamson, Joseph McNamee of Morgantown and Daniel McNamee of Huntington; two brothers, John Reeves of Orlando, Fla., and Joseph Reeves of Xenia, Ohio; four sisters, Linda Reeves, Debbie Guthrie, Joyce Lewis and Becky Jack, all of Xenia, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Andrew, Lindsey, Nicholas and Noah McNamee.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 8:30 Friday at J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel. Final viewing and prayers will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Ministers will be Father Steve Gallenstein and Father Joe Schuernman.

Burial will be in the Annie E. Young cemetery, Shelbiana.

Visitation will be held 6-9 p.m. Thursday and 5-8:30 p.m. Friday at J.W. Call Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Francis School and Leonard Lawson Cancer Center.

J.W. Call and Son Funeral Home of Pikeville is in charge of arrangements.

Gay Zola Varney
Gay Zola Leedy Varney, 71, of Kimper, Kentucky, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002 at her residence.

Born June 26, 1931 at Kimper, she was a daughter of the late Kenis Pharoah Leedy and Jesse Hensley Leedy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Lee Varney; two brothers, K.P. Leedy and Arnold Clinton Leedy; and two sisters, Corraine and Clara Leedy.

A homemaker, Mrs. Varney was a member of the Belfry Senior Citizens and Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Ance Varney Jr.; five sons, Larry Chris (Loretta) Varney of Canada, Kentucky, Garry Dennis (Marie) Varney of Raccoon, Kentucky, Barry Dale (Norma) Varney of Clarksville, Tenn., Anthony Dean (Peggy) Varney of Canada, Kentucky, and Dusty Ance (Lisa) Varney of Canada, Kentucky; sisters Opal Sullivan of Pinsonfork, Kentucky, and Mary Magdalene Wellman of Columbus, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, Dawnetta Carol (Charles) Marcum, Larry Chris (Marie) Varney II, Melissa Kaye (Mark) Morgan, Bethany Lynn Varney, Garry Dennis Varney II, Kellie Dalena (Jason) McLellan, Dusty Seth Varney, Kimberly Dawn Varney, Nathan Anthony Varney, Barry Matthew Varney, Ashley Gaye Varney, Loralie Brook Varney and Allison Hope Varney; eight great-grandchildren, Abigail Brooke Marcum, Haley Jade Varney, Charles Anderson Marcum, Dustin Tyler Marcum, Alyssa Dawn Marcum, Camry Lynn Varney, Zachary Jason McLellan and Chase Whitley Lester; a special friend, her little dog Mitzi Jo; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at the Canada Freewill Baptist Church with the following clergymen officiating: her son Dusty Varney, her pastor Buddy Kendrick, Bill Akers, Donnie Williamson, Gerria Reynolds and Gary Thacker.

Burial will follow in the Varney Branch Family cemetery at Kimper, Kentucky

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin after 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Canada Freewill Baptist Church, Canada, Kentucky Special services will be held both nights (Thursday and Friday) beginning at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky

Monroe Johnson
Monroe Johnson, 94, of Ashland, Kentucky, formerly of Williamson, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002 at Kings Daughters Medical Center.

Born Jan. 14, 1908 in Rock Castle Creek, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William and Jennie Williams Johnson.

A retired coal miner, Mr. Johnson was a member of the Faith Church of God, Flatwoods, Kentucky, and the United Mine Workers of America.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Copley Johnson; one son, Hezekiah Johnson of Nevada; three daughters, Carol Martin of Cleveland, Tenn.; Helen Southers of Columbus, Ohio; and Julie Halley of Chattaroy; two stepdaughters, Florence Elam of St. Charles, Ill; and Violet Darty of Ashland, Kentucky; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002 at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Maher, with pastors Richard Darty and Gregory Whitlow presiding.

Lazear Funeral Home of Ashland is in charge.

Sara Chapman
Sara Jane Chapman, 24, of Warfield, Kentucky, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at the Big Elk United Baptist Church, Inez, Kentucky

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10.
