Mickey Ray Varney
Mickey Ray Varney, 49, of Canada, Kentucky, passed on due to complications while undergoing treatment for gastroesophageal cancer at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, on Friday, May 02, 2003.

Mickey was born on January 11, 1954, in Williamson. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Sheila Ann; son, Chadwick Ray of the home; daughter, Stephanie Ann (Edward) Chang of Ann Arbor, Mich.; parents William Jim and Thelma Jean of Belfry, Kentucky; brothers James Michael (Patricia) of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, Gary Lee (Betty) of Toler, Kentucky; Steven Keith (Sherri), Gregory Alan (Heather), and Kevin Thomas, all of Belfry.

Mickey also leaves behind one very special granddaughter, Olivia Dae Chang; mother-in-law, Helen Loraine Chapman and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Mickey was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William Bill and Jennie Varney and maternal grandparents Roy Thomas and Veda Mae Lancaster.

Mickey was a 1972 graduate of Belfry High School and a disabled retiree of Eastern Coal Corporation. Mickey was always active in his son's school athletics, having coached for Bevins Elementary for many years, serving as a positive role model and self-esteem builder for many children and their families. Mickey enjoyed standing on the sidelines during his son's and brothers' high school athletics.

Mickey was a member of the Pinsonfork Church of God. His faith in God gave him and his family great strength during his five-month battle with cancer.

Mickey will be dearly missed by his friends and family. He was our love, our strength and our passion. He was the cornerstone of our family, a remarkable son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.

The family will receive friends at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, Belfry, on Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 7, at noon with burial to follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens' Garden of the Psalms.

Funeral service will be conducted by pastors Jerry Horn and Ronnie Kendrick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mickey Varney Cancer Fund at Community Trust Bank in South Williamson, Kentucky

Roger Phillips

Roger Blake Phillips, 60, died May 10, 2003 in Fort Pierce, FL.

Mr. Phillips was born in Pinsonfork, Kentucky and moved to Ft. Pierce 22 years ago from Hyden, KY.

He was a Science Teacher at Southern Oaks Middle School. He was a graduate of Belfry High School, graduate of Pikeville College, graduate studies at University of Kentucky, a science teacher for 26 years, a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Stone Lodge #183 Masonic Lodge, and El Hasa Shrine Club of Ashland, KY. He was also an avid Nascar, Atlanta Braves, and Kentucky Wildcats fan.

Survivors include his wife Marita Joseph Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; sons, Jamie Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL, Michael Phillips of New Smyrna Beach, FL, David Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; daughter, Rebecca Phillips of Ft. Pierce, FL; sisters, Eugenia Elaine Phillips Lakes of Richmond, KY, Lana Cheryl Phillips Higdon of Raleigh, NC, and Teresa Karen Phillips Roberts of McAndrews, KY; granddaughter, Kayla Shea Phillips and her mother, Kellie Shay Phillips; and was predeceased by his parents, Blake & Freda Phillips.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the Exchange Club Castle, 3625 W Midway Rd, Ft. Pierce, FL 34981 or to Indian River Presbyterian Church, 2499 Virginia Ave., Ft. Pierce, FL 34982. Contributions may also be given to the UK Cancer Center in Lexington, 801 Rose Street, Lexington, KY 40536.

Services: Friends may call Tuesday, May 13, 2003 from 4:30-7:30 PM at Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home, Ft. Pierce. A Service will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at 4:30 PM at Haisley-Hobbs Chapel with Dr. Sam Rutland of Indian River Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will take place at Hoskins cemetery, Asher, Kentucky Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home is in charge of all local arrangements.

Juanita Dotson

Juanita Dotson, 81, of Kokomo, Ind., formerly of Belcher, Kentucky, died Monday, May 12, 2003 in Kokomo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2003 at Bailey Funeral Home, Pikeville, Kentucky

Burial will follow in the Spears cemetery, Belcher, Kentucky

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday at Bailey Funeral Home.

Nell Yost

Nell Yost, 82, of Williamson, died May 2, 2003, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

She was born March 28, 1921, in Mingo County, W.Va., a daughter of the late George Maynard and Brookie White Maynard.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Fielding Yost, on May 4, 2000; brothers Bill, Ed, Jake and Chick Maynard; and sisters Lottie Rode, Minnie Curry and Mary Garrett.

Nell was a retired deputy clerk with the Mingo County Assessor's Office. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Williamson where she was actively involved and served as the first female elder.

Survivors include one son, John F. (Karen) Yost of Prichard, W.Va.; daughter Susan (Ted) Jaeger Jr. of Fulton, Mo.; brother James Maynard of Greensboro, N.C.; sister Clara Mae McNeer of Tulsa Okla.; and three grandchildren, Bradley Scott and Ashley Gayle Yost and Christopher Brett Jaeger. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Monday, May 5, 2003, at Weaver Mortuary with the Rev. Richard Belcher officiating.

Burial will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, W.Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be men of the First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be Sunday evening, May 4, 2003, 6-9 p.m. at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dignity Hospice, P.O. Box 4304, Chapmanville, W.Va., 25508.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Weaver Mortuary of West Williamson.

Julia Dotson

Julia L. "Junie" Dotson, 84, of Phelps, Kentucky, died May 4, 2003 at her home.

She was born Feb. 5, 1919 in Pike County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Joseph L. and Judy Wolford Daugherty.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Burl Dotson; one daughter, Judith Claretta; and one brother, Joseph L. Daugherty Jr.

She was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph "Reggie Joe" Dotson (Leasie') of Phelps, Kentucky, and William Darrell Snow (Sherry) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin; sisters Katherine "Trudy" Dotson of Phelps, Kentucky, and Reba Stockinger of Texas; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and special nephews Larry "Sonny" Daugherty and Edward Delong.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at the Jamboree Church of God with the Revs. Willie Gordon, Marvin Casey, William Cornn and Mitch Bowling officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wolford Family cemetery at Phelps, Kentucky

Nephews, family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation began Monday, May 5, 2003 at 6 p.m. at the church with services nightly at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Service.

Ermal Adkins

Ermal Adkins, 70, of Jackson's Branch Rd., Elkhorn City, Kentucky, died Monday, May 5, 2003 at Pikeville (Kentucky) Methodist Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Bailey Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Rose cemetery, Rockhouse, Kentucky

Visitation began after 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Samuel Wallace

Samuel "Sammy" Wallace, 60, of Breaks, Kentucky, died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Bailey Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Breaks, Kentucky

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at the funeral home.

Otto Perry

Otto Earl Perry, 72, of Tomahawk, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Three Rivers Medical Center.

Born Nov. 2, 1930 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he was a retired handyman.

He is survived by sons Elbert Perry and David Perry, both of Inez, Kentucky, and Michael Perry of Ohio; daughters Janet Perry and Cathy Woodworth, both of Ohio; stepchildren Diana Maynard of Inez, Danny Spears of Tomahawk and Geraldine Spears of Georgia; brothers Donald Perry of Tomahawk and Frank Perry of Ohio; a sister, Ellen Adams of Ohio; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the Inez Chapel of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Baker officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sabern Hinkle cemetery in Inez, Kentucky

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.

Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Karen Potter

Karen Lee Stiltner Potter, 30, of Mouthcard, Kentucky, died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at Pikeville (Kentucky) Methodist Hospital.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Lick Creek Holiness Church of God.

Burial will follow in the Flanary cemetery, Mouthcard, Kentucky

Visitation began 3 p.m. Tuesday at Lick Creek Holiness Church of God, Lick Creek, Kentucky

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home Inc.

Georgia Marie Stafford

Georgia Marie Stafford, 77, of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, died Monday, May 5, 2003 at Mt. View Health Care, Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Bailey Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young cemetery, E. Shelbiana, Kentucky

Visitation began after 6 p.m. Monday.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Beatrice Hardin
Beatrice L. Arnold Hardin, 76, of Stopover, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky, following an extended illness.

She was born in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late Buford Lee and Laura Mattie Wright Arnold. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan and Pike (Kentucky) counties, a member of the Shepherd Memorial Presbyterian Church, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Hardin was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, was preceded in death by one daughter, Diane Robinette; and two sisters, Betty Cline and Elsie Lanur.

She is survived by her husband, Earsel Hardin; one daughter, Joe Nell Bidwell and her husband, Robert, of Aurora Colo.; four sons, Roger Hardin and his wife, Barbara, Douglas Hardin and his wife, Wilma, Gorgon Hardin, and Broc Hardin and his wife, Inis, all of Stopover; 16 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Saturday, May 17, 2003, at the Shepherd Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stopover with the Rev. DeWitt Furrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

Katherine Charles
Katherine Sue Charles, 51, of Stopover, Kentucky, passed away at her home in the loving care of her family on Sunday, May 25, 2003.

She was born in Matewan on April 10, 1962, a daughter of the late Hobert Lee and Mary Hurley Rife. She was a certified nursing assistant and a member of the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, James Thomas Rife and Joseph Rife.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Charles; three sons, Fred Charles Jr. of Manchester, Kentucky, Sonny James (Gina) of Stopover, and Billy Joe Charles of Belfry, Kentucky; one daughter, Karen Sue Charles of Asheboro, N.C.; three brothers, John (Pat) Rife of bradshaw, W.Va., Earl (Joyce) Rife of Asheboro, and Larry (Linda) of Hurley, Va.; four sisters, Dora (Harold) Bevins of Hurley, Shirley Cline of Hurley, Jeri Bostic of Asheboro, and Fay (Ronald) Linville of Matewan; and four grandchildren, Tiffany, Sonny, James II, Billy Joe Jr., and Olivia Ellen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Stopover Freewill Baptist Church with the Revs. James Chapman, L.C. Hunt, Harold Layne, DeWitt Furrow, Otis Blankenship and Larry Rife. Burial will follow in the Charles Family cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church with special services Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps Funeral Home of Phelps.
