George Williams

George Williams, 92, of Louisa, Kentucky, formerly of Crum, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center.

He was born on Aug. 3, 1910, a son of the late Sam Williams and Lydia Brewer. He was a retired coal miner and member of the East Kermit Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ada Williams.

He is survived by two sons, Walter E. Williams of Ft. Gay, W.Va., and Dennis R. Williams of East Liberty, Ohio; and three daughters, Jewell D. King of Sidney, Ohio, Ruth C. Bell of Maplewood, Ohio, and Phyllis Bosec of Anna, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the East Kermit Church of God with Denny Land officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview cemetery in Quincy, Ohio.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, at the church.

The Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home of Inez is in charge of arrangements.

Lassie Harris McCoy

Lassie Harris McCoy, 96, of Ransom, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

He was born on March 26, 1907, in Rasom to the late Wayne and Vina Phillips Hatfield. She was a homemaker and member of the First Smaria Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Roland Harris and Bob McCoy; one son, James Lucas Harris; two brothers, Thurman Harris and Verlan Harris; one granddaughter, Loretta Whitt Smith; and two nephews, Ervin Conn and Robert Conn.

Mrs. McCoy is survived by one son, Bill R. Harris of Fallsburg, Kentucky; three daughters, Daryl (Donnie) Smith and Mary (Grennis) Smith, both of Ransom, and Ruby Whitt of Monticello, Kentucky; one sister, Myrtle Conn of Ransom; one special daughter, Mary Dotson of Monticello; one special granddaughter, Mary Church of Belfry, Kentucky; two special friends, Gertle Bowens and Connie Crawford; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel in Toler, Kentucky, with the Elder Mike Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris cemetery at Ransom.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, with special services Saturday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m., with the Elders Elmer Smith and Kenneth Hall officiating.

Carl Compton
Carl L. "Frog" Compton, 62, of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Born November 25, 1942, in Phelps, Kentucky, to the late James P. Compton and Elizabeth Childers Compton, he was of the Presbyterian faith and worked for the Chisholm Coal Company.

He is preceded in death by his parents, the late James P. Compton and Elizabeth Childers Compton.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Kilgore Compton of Phelps, Kentucky; sons, Carl L. (Linda) Compton of Fairfield, Ohio and James Dean (Annette) Compton of St. Paul, Va.; daughter, Beverly Lynn (Troy) Gooslin of Fairfield, Ohio; brothers, Billy Gene (Patty) Compton of Phelps, Kentucky and James Preston Compton Jr. (Jennifer) of Jefferson City, Tenn.; sisters, Susan (Jay) Williams, Marilyn (Joe) Hancock, Marsha (Steve) Roberts, all of Jefferson City, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Carly, Jamie, Megan, Kaylyn and Jake.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 11, 2005, 1 p.m., at Phelps Funeral Services' Chapel with Revs. Mitch Bowling and Earl Jones Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Sanders Family cemetery.

Visitation will begin Thursday, March 10, 2005, at 6 p.m. at the chapel with a special service being held Thursday, March 10, 2005, at 7 p.m.

Sryldia Durham
Sryldia Thelma Pauley Durham, 77, of Belfry, Kentucky, went to her eternal family home Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

She was born April 18, 1928, in Tazewell, Va., to the late Harvey Theodore Pauley and Laura Eveline Turley Pauley.

She always knew that the key to happiness in life is to love, cherish and be devoted to family and friends. Her joy on earth came from appreciating God's most important gifts, family reunions, singing and laughing with sisters, crocheting a gift for a friend, working a puzzle with her children and cuddling a grandchild on her lap. Her love and genuine goodness were felt by all and even those who were not related to her called her "Mom."

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Carol Durham Fields; daughter-in-law, Freda Mae Durham; a sister, Ruth Alice Pauley Durham; four brothers, her twin Thurman Pauley, and Clifford, James and Riley Pauley.

She was the loving and devoted wife of James Calvin Durham for 57 years, who survives. They raised a happy and loving home of nine children, surviving are: five sons, Calvin (Jean) Durham of Barboursville, W.Va., Larry (Mattie) Durham of Hardy, Kentucky, Byron (Anne) Durham of Huntington, W.Va., Jerry Durham of Paintsville, Kentucky and Ronnie (Tammi) Durham of Georgetown, Kentucky; and three daughters, Phyllis May of Huntington, W.Va., Jeanie (Herb) Fry of Huntington, W.Va. and Pam Zornes of Richmond, Va.

She is also survived by three brothers, Charlie "Bob" (Margaret) Pauley of Tazewell, Va., Early Clarence (E.C.) (Dorothy) Pauley of Tazewell, Va. and Henry (Alice) Pauley of Bluefield, Va.; two sisters, Barbara (Gary) Carter of Bluefield, Va. and Katherine (Clifford) Wolford of Bluefield, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2005, 1 p.m., at Dudley Mortuary, Bluefield, Va. with burial following at Grandview cemetery, Bluefield, Va. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky and after 6 p.m. Friday at Dudley Funeral Home, Bluefield, Va.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Kentucky

Lon Preece
Lon C. Preece, 55, of Inez, Kentucky, passed away Monday, March 7, 2005, at Inez, Kentucky

Born March 17, 1949, in Martin County, Kentucky, to the late Howard and Rosie Delong Preece, he was a member of the Bethel United Baptist Church. He was ordained on May 23, 1992 and elected pastor of Bethel United Baptist Church in 1998.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Howard Preece Jr.; and sister, Fern Preece.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Proctor Preece of Inez, Kentucky; son, Devin (Marlene) Preece of Georgetown, Kentucky; daughters, Michelle (Ronnie) Caldwell of Inez, Kentucky and Shannon (Todd) Maynard of Paintsville, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Morgan and Jordan Caldwell; brothers, Franklin Preece of Inez, Kentucky, Boone Preece of Inez, Kentucky, Glen Ray Preece of Inez, Kentucky, Harold Preece of Inez, Kentucky, James B. Preece of Inez, Kentucky and Donnie Preece of Inez, Kentucky; and sisters, Fay Marcum of Ohio, Corrine Ellis of Ohio, Verna McKenzie of Ohio and Sharon Winchester of Ohio.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, 1 p.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky with Marion Blair, Jack Small and Tim McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Preece cemetery, Inez, Kentucky

Visitation will be held Tuesday after 6 p.m. at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky

Earnest Carter
Earnest Carter, 88, of Pike County, Kentucky, died February 25, 2005, at the Good Shepherd Community Nursing Center at Phelps, Kentucky

He was born March 13, 1916, the son of the late Newton and Jessie Gooslin Carter. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Carl Carter; and his sisters, Clara Carter, Ora Carter Metzer and Gladys Carter.

He is survived by a son, Paul David Carter and his wife Lisa of Shipman, Va.; a daughter, Joyce Carter Crosby and her husband Hunter of Churchville, Va.; and one brother, Fred Carter of Pike County.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Brett Sterling Carter, Jesse Paul Carter, Heather Crosby Gardner, Holly Hunter Crosby, Hunter Caleb Crosby and great grandson Dale Jackson Gardner.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2005, at the R.S. Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Ervin Fields officiating. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m.

Opal Honaker, 85, of Simpsonville, Kentucky, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home, PeWee Valley, Kentucky

Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

Visitation will be 7 p.m. ­ 9 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2005 at Shannon Funeral Home, Shelbyville, Kentucky

William French Blackburn, Sr.
William French Blackburn, Sr., CPA, 79, beloved and devoted father, grandfather, brother and uncle, departed this life Monday, March 7, 2005. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 10, 2005, at 11 a.m., Forest Hills Baptist Church, Forest Hills, Kentucky, with Pastor Carl Hess and Pastor Mike Kohari officiating. In accordance with his last wishes, graveside services and burial will be held on Friday, March 11, 2005, 2 p.m., at Lexington cemetery, 833 Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky

A retired Williamson and Forest Hills CPA and businessman, he was born November 14, 1925, at Forest Hills, Pike County, Kentucky He was the son of the late French and Agnes (Varney) Blackburn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by six sisters, Francis Stedl, Pauline Lowe, Susie Stanley, Lillian Hoskins, Emogene Baldridge and Anna Grace White.

He is survived and will be dearly missed by two sisters, Mary Jane Varney of Baldwin, MI, and Willa Maria Potter of Lexington, Kentucky; his five loving children, Karen Grey Carlton of Williamson, W.Va., Kela Schram of Melborne, Fl., William French Blackburn III of Lexington, Kentucky, Robin Blackburn Rajki of Lexington, Kentucky, . and Mary Bruce Blackburn of Montclair, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Elaine Schram Barker, John Michael Schram and Audrey Bess Schram, of Melborn, Fla., Courtney Ellen Blackburn, Meghan McKay Blackburn and William Christian Blackburn, of Lexington, Kentucky, John Gabriel Buonassissi of Montclair, N.J.; two great grandchildren, Christian and Ryan Barker of Melbourne, Fl.; a special nephew and his wife, W. Robert (Bob) and Pam Hamlin of Huntington, W.Va.; a very caring, devoted and special friend, Ethel Burgette of Forest Hills, Kentucky; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

He graduated from the University of Kentucky, College of Commerce, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He was a life member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and most recently was honored as a member of the Fellows Society at the University.

He also received a Doctor of Letters Degree from Southern West Virginia Community College. He is generally credited with being the driving force behind the establishment of the branch college in Williamson, W.Va.

He attended Pike County, Kentucky, public schools and graduated from Belfry High School. Upon graduation from high school, during World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He served in the Pacific Theater on both Midway Island and at the Marine Corp Air Base in Oahu, Hawaii. After his Honorable Discharge, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant J.G.

After graduation from the University of Kentucky and before opening his Accounting practice in Williamson, he was employed as an Agent with the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC, and Huntington, W.Va. He attended the Treasury Department's IRS Agents Training School in Washington, DC, and ranked first in the class of nearly 200 college graduate/agents from throughout the U.S. He sat for and passed the West Virginia CPA exam and became only the fifty-second accountant in West Virginia to achieve CPA status.

A Certified Public Accountant by profession, he was a member of the American Society of CPA's and the West Virginia and Kentucky Societies. He managed a distinguished Accounting and Tax practice in Williamson, W.Va. for more than forty years. He was an acknowledged expert in coal, oil and gas taxation. He served as the CPA for numerous WV, Kentucky and Va. coal companies, banks and other organizations as well as hundreds of businesses and individuals in the Williamson - Pike County area.

He was selected for inclusion in "Who's Who in the East" and "Who's Who in American Industry and Commerce." He wrote accounting and tax articles and was published in the Commerce Clearing House (CCH) magazine, Taxes. He was appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to serve on a panel to review and recommend revisions to the State of Kentucky tax structures.

In addition to his professional practice, he was active in the Williamson and Pike County communities and civic affairs for much of his life. He was elected and served as a member of the Williamson City Council; he was a long-time member and former President of the Williamson Rotary Club; a member of the Williamson Salvation Army Board of Directors; Chairman of the Board of the Tug Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross; a member of the first Board of Trustees of the Williamson Branch of Marshall University (now Southern WV Community and Technical College); and taught Accounting at the college as well during its formative years.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Matewan National Bank (now BB&T), and served on numerous Boards of other businesses and charities over the years. He was the Accountant and Tax Advisor to the Ephraim McDowell Charitable Foundation (ARH Hospital), South Williamson, Kentucky, and was instrumental in establishing charitable trusts and scholarship assistance to local youths. He served on the University of Kentucky Foundation's Advisory Committee for Charitable Giving.

He made numerous contributions to the youth of the area and devoted considerable time and resources to the education, development and personal growth of area youth. He was active in coaching youth sports (basketball and football) in the Williamson Youth League. He had a successful coaching tenure in the Belfry Grade School Football program, serving as head coach for Varney and South Williamson Grade Schools.

He will be deeply and sadly missed by his family, friends, and professional colleagues, as well as, by the two communities of Forest Hills and Williamson, that he called home.

Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be: Gifford Varney, Thomas Ratliff, Donald Staker, Lafe P. Ward, Sr., Judge Robert Staker, Justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals Elliott Maynard, State Senator Truman Chafin, Jack Blackburn and Sherman Young.

Pallbearers will be Bob Hamlin, David Stanley, Doug Stanley, Orville Baldridge, Carl Rajki and Christian Blackburn.

Visitation at Rogers Funeral Home will be Wednesday evening March 9, 2005 from 5 - 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions, in memory of Bill, to the American Cancer Society, the New Belfry High School Athletic Facilities Fund, or the Forest Hills Baptist Church.

Clyde Hurley
Clyde Darrell "Peg" Hurley, 54, of Stopover, Kentucky, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born March 25, 1950 at Stopover, Kentucky, he is survived by his parents, Jack and Ailline Hurley of Stopover, Kentucky

He is also survived by his wife, Sherry Sullivan Hurley, daughters Bobbie Jo (Jeff) Layne of Stopover, Helen Marie Hurley of Eubank, Kentucky and one stepdaughter, Kelli Whitt of Phelps; and a stepson Dakota Whitt of Phelps; three brothers, William (Judy) Hurley, Danny Ray (Bernice) Hurley and Clifton (Judy) Hurley, all of Stopover; a sister, Barbara Ann Hurley of Stopover and two grandchildren, D.J. Layne and Adrian Layne both of Stopover.

He was preceded in death by sister, Helen Marie Hurley.

He was a dozer operator for Frazier Creek Mining and of the Pentecostal faith.

Services will be held at noon on Friday, March 18, 2005, at the Stopover Church of God with the Revs. Harold Layne, Larry Rife and Leroy Holly officiating.

Burial will follow at the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky

Pallbearers will be Virgil Blankenship, Dennis Bowman, Rodney Bryant, Terry Carter, Garrett Cline, Jimmy Baisden, William Hurley, Jr., Gary Adkins and Darwin Bailey.

Visitation will be held Thursday March 17, 2005 at 5 p.m. at the church with services at 7:30 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services, Inc. of Phelps, Kentucky

Wallace Muncy
Elder Wallace Muncy, 75, of Hatfield, Kentucky, died Thursday, March 17, 2005 at Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

Born October 26, 1929 in Martin County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Richard and Pearl Maynard (Muncy) Finley.

In addition to his parents, Elder Muncy was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Jones Muncy and a brother, Luther Muncy.

He was a retired coal miner, member of the UMWA, a minister and elder for 52 years and a member of the Mary Elizabeth Old Regular Baptist Church.

Survivors include: Sue (James) Stepp of Lovely, Kentucky; a sister, Ruth Holbrook of Clothier, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Misty Nicole Stepp of Lovely, Kentucky; two nephews, Richard Muncy of Lovely, Kentucky and Glen Muncy of Pikeville, Kentucky as well as a host of extended family members, church family and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the Mary Elizabeth Old Regular Baptist Church with elders Bobby Scott, David Crigger and Tom Dials officiating.

Burial will follow in the Marcum cemetery at Hatfield, Kentucky

Family members and friends will serve as active pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be elders of the Old Regular Baptist Church.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Friday and anytime Saturday at Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Kentucky with special services at 7 p.m. each evening. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel.
