Dr. Herbert M. Hatfield Sr. (distant relative of the Hatfield and McCoy family), 87, Haines City, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his residence.

He was born October 23, 1916 in Pike County, Kentucky

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at Landmark Baptist Church, Haines City, Fla. with burial following in the Forest Hill cemetery, Haines City, Fla.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 2, 2004, 5 - 7 p.m., at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, Haines City, Fla.

Juanita Bartley

Juanita Ramsey Bartley, 75, of Ashcamp, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, 11 a.m., at Bailey Funeral Home with burial following at Ratliff cemetery, Shelby Gap., Kentucky

Visitation will be held at Bailey Funeral Home, after 6 p.m. Thursday, July 1, 2004.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home, Inc., Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Charles Curry

Charles H. "Shorty" Curry, 78, of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Huntington Veterans Hospital.

Born March 5, 1926, in Brushy Creek, Kentucky, to the late William H. Curry and Ella Ray Curry, he was a retired coal miner and a Navy veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mabel Oney and Gretis Bowlin; brothers, James, Willie, Ed and Bennie Curry; and grandson, Christopher Maynard.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Pauline Charles Curry of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; sons, Dennis (Jean) Maynard of Columbus, Ohio and Tom "Sonny" Maynard of Richmond, Kentucky; daughter, Sandi Baisden of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; adopted daughter, Staci Beckett of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; grandchildren, Greg Maynard of Black Lick, Ohio, Justin O'Brien of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, Kelli Maynard of Powell, Ohio and Lisa (John) Worley of Berea, Kentucky; great grandchildren, Emily Frost of Powell, Ohio, Kris Madison Faith Worley of Berea, Kentucky, Zachary Maynard of Black Lick, Ohio, Peyton Worley of Berea, Kentucky and Jay Cook of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Danny Slater officiating. Burial will follow at Curry Family cemetery, Turkey Creek, Kentucky Military rites will be performed by Belfry DAV Chapter #141. The family will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at Rogers Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky

Hazel Hickman

Hazel O'Brien Hickman, 98, of Phelps, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord July 19, 2004, at her home in the loving care of her family.

Born February 8, 1906, in Louisa, Kentucky, to the late Alonzo O'Brien and Laura Beasley O'Brien, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hickman was of the Apostolic faith and a member of the Church of God in Jesus' Name at Phelps, Kentucky

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband John Hickman; three sons, Charles Hickman, Teddy Jack Hickman and James Edward Hickman; and seven brothers and sisters.

Surviving are her sons Doris Hickman (Phyllis) of Bean Station, Tenn. and J.D. Hickman (Justine) of Phelps, Kentucky; daughters, Gearl McCoy (Herman) of Phelps, Kentucky, Janice Archer of Morristown, Tenn., Laura Dotson (Orville "Square") of Bean Station, Tenn. and Ede Stump (Daris) of Bean Station, Tenn.; sister, Marie Hunt of Phelps, Kentucky; and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 22, 2004, 12 noon, at Church of God in Jesus' Name at Phelps, Kentucky, with Rev. Opie Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Billy Dotson cemetery at Phelps, Kentucky Grandchildren, family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at the church at 6 p.m. with services nightly at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc. of Matewan, W.Va. and Phelps Funeral Services of Phelps, Kentucky

Katherine Marcum

Katherine Mae Marcum, 51, Catlettsburg, Kentucky, formerly of Williamson, W.Va., passed away Monday, July 19, 2004, at Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, Grayson, Kentucky

Born December 30, 1952, in Williamson, W.Va., to the late Ancle Edward Wright and Mary Rosetta Maynard, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Marcum was of the Church of Christ faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Matthew Wright, Bobby Ray Maynard and David C. Hayes.

Surviving are her son, Robert Lee Marcum of Catlettsburg, Kentucky; brothers and sisters, William Thomas Wright of Columbus, Ohio, Franklin Delano Wright of Phoenix, Ariz., Ronald Wright of Lagrange, Kentucky, James Edward Bare of Accoville, W.Va., Dottie Jean Hall of Chattaroy, W.Va., Cynthia Reyes of Radcliff, Kentucky, Mary Warrix, with whom she made her home in Catlettsburg, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23, 2004, 1 p.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Kentucky with Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Murphy cemetery in Kermit, W.Va.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2004, after 6 p.m. at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Kentucky

Charles Curry

Charles H. "Shorty" Curry, 78, of Turkey Creek, Kentucky, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, in the VA Medical Center, Huntington, W.Va.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, KentuckyEarl (Yockie) Crum, 78, of Kermit, W.Va., passed away Monday, June 28, 2004, at his residence.

He was born December 11, 1925, in Mingo County, W.Va., to the late LaFatte Crum and Dixie Moore Crum.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 1, 2004, 11 a.m., at Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Warfield, Kentucky with Emanuel Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Mollette cemetery, Kermit, W.Va.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Warfield, from 5 - 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky

Stallard Reynolds
Stallard Reynolds, 69, of Phelps, Kentucky, died Friday, July 10, 2004, at Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Kentucky

Born December 20, 1934, he was the son of the late Walter and Octavia Stanley Reynolds.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his stepmother, Hazel Reynolds.

He was disabled.

Survivors include: a sister, Genevie (Link) Rutherford of Huddy, Kentucky; three nephews, Walter (Luanna) Rutherford, Tim (Mildred) Rutherford and Michael (Elaine) Rutherford, all of Huddy and a very special cousin, Floe Hensley of Hardy, Kentucky

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home chapel, Belfry, Kentucky, with Buddy Kendrick officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy.

Pallbearers will be Walter Rutherford, Tim Rutherford, Michael Rutherford, Calan Rutherford, Joseph Todd Longacre and Todd Longacre.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. ­ 2 p.m., Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roger Funeral Home.

Lillian M. Norman

Lillian M. Norman, 71, of McCarr, Kentucky, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

She was born July 26, 1933, In Kelsi, Va., a daughter of Bradley Coleman of Williamson and the late Nellie Hurley Coleman.

In addition to her mother, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert A. Norman; one daughter, Barbara Blankenship; and one son, Christopher Norman.

She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include four sons, Albert (Inis) Norman Jr. of Vulcan; Sammy Norman of Hendersonville, N.C.; Jessie and Fritz Norman, both of McCarr; two daughters, Angela (Steven) Blankenship of Hardy, Kentucky and Debbie (Rev. Odis) Blankenship of Vulcan; two brothers, Harold Coleman of Red Jacket and George T. Coleman of Michigan; four sisters, Anna Ruth Harris of Vulcan; Betty Coleman of Chattaroy; Lorraine Santos of California; and Dora Blackburn of South Williamson, Kentucky; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2004, at Phelps Funeral Services' chapel with the Rev. Odis Blankenship and the Rev. Bobbie Dale Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Vulcan.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the chapel with a service being held at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phelps Funeral Services at Phelps, Kentucky

Gene Leslie

Gene Bennett Leslie, 79, of Pikeville, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his residence.

Born January 7, 1925, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Shirley H. Leslie and Mae Ratliff Leslie. He was owner of Advance Engineering and worked as a civil engineer. He was also the financial aid officer at East Kentucky Beauty College from 1987 - 2000. He was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church and a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a BS in civil engineering. Mr. Leslie was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He served in the U.S. Navy, a veteran of World War II. While in the service, he was a tail gunner and dive bomber.

Surviving are his wife, Fay Ray Leslie of the home; sons, James M. Leslie, John M. Leslie (wife Loretta) of Tennessee, Gene Bennett Leslie II of Birmingham, Ala.; stepson, Richard A. Ray (wife Francine) Pikeville, Kentucky; daughters, Teresa Lee Leslie of Birmingham, Ala., Linda K. Guillum of Tennessee; stepdaughter, Karen R. Chaffins (husband Mark) of Union, Kentucky; half sisters, Susan Browning of McKinney, Texas; two grandchildren, Johnathon Leslie and Laura E. Leslie; and four step grandchildren, Wesley A. Ray, Kellyn B. Chaffins, R. Matthew Chase Ray and Benjamin L. Chaffins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home with Henry Mahan and Tom Harding officiating. Burial will follow at Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville, Kentucky Military rites will be performed by Johns Creek Disabled American Veterans #166.

Visitation will be held after 7 p.m. Thursday at J.W. Call & Son Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers are Cliff Calthourne, Darren Iricks, John M. Leslie, James M. Leslie, Gene Bennett Leslie, Mark A. Chaffins, Richard A. Ray and Kenneth Alport. Honorary pallbearers are Orville Mayo Clark, Jr. and Jim Taylor.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J.W. Call & Sons Funeral Home, Pikeville, Kentucky

Freeland Charles Jr.

Freeland Anthony Charles Jr., 50, of McCarr, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his residence.

He was born on June 17, 1953, in Williamson, the son of Dovie Crabtree Rutherford of McCarr and the late Freeland Charles Sr. He was disabled and of the Church of God faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Charles.

Along with his mother, he is survived by his step-father, David Charles Rutherford of McCarr; special companion, Imogene Baker of McCarr; one son, Earl Anthony Charles of Cincinnati; one daughter, Terri Charles of Cincinnati; two brothers, Brett Charles of Kermit and Allen Charles of West Liberty, Kentucky, two sisters, Donna Fancher of Columbus, Ohio, and Sharon Miller of Cincinnati; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home in Phelps, Kentucky, with the Rev. Willie Gordon officiating. Burial will follow in the Crabtree cemetery at Nolan.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the R.S. Jones and Son Funeral Home.

Bessie Layne

Bessie Coleman Layne, 80, formerly of Third Street, Pikeville, died Saturday in Stanton, Kentucky

She was the daughter of the late George H. and Florence Dotson Coleman.

Surviving are her children Jackie (Mrs. Glen) Smith of Phelps, Kentucky; Kay (Mrs. Mike) Smith of Kimper, Kentucky; Jo Ann (Mrs. Clinton) Casey and Sharon Layne, both of Stanton; Lossie (Mrs. Perry) Casey of Bean Station, Tenn., Magaline (Mrs. Jenis) Smith of Cynthiana, Kentucky; Bobby Layne and wife Mary Lou of Frenchburg, Kentucky; Frank Layne and wife Ann of Versailles, Kentucky; Danny Layne and wife Kathy of Stanton.

Also surviving are a sister, May Dell of California, Kentucky; a brother, Bradley Coleman of Williamson; 20 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at the Versailles Church of God in Versailles.

Visitation from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday and noon to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday at the church. Blackburn & Ward Funeral Home, 161 Broadway, Versailles, is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Chaney

Phyllis Chaney, 81, of Peyton's Creek, Pikeville, Kentucky, died on May 8, 2004, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at the Justice Funeral Home in Pikeville, with Old Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Visitation will begin on Monday, May 10, at 5 p.m. for family and 6 p.m. for friends at the funeral home. Special services will be conducted nightly.

Patricia "Pat" Spaulding
Patricia Hamilton "Pat" Spaulding, 67, of Bowling Green, Va., died Monday, May 17, 2004, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in Williamson, she was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowling Green, where she was a member of the choir.

She was a registered nurse and had retired as division school nurse from Caroline County public schools. She was one of the founding members of the Virginia School Nurses Association and currently served on the board, representing Caroline, of RACSB.

Survivors include her husband, George Spaulding; two daughters, Karen I. Spaulding of Fredericksburg, Va., and Kathryn J. Spaulding of Atlanta, Ga., and a brother, Jim Hamilton of Henderson, Kentucky

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood cemetery under direction of Storke Funeral Home.

W. Stephen Stover, 36, of Mouthcard, Kentucky, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Feds Creek, Kentucky

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Elkhorn City, Kentucky Burial will follow in the Mt. Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va.

Visitations will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday at the Bailey Funeral Home chapel.
