Gilby L. Greene, school principal, vice mayor of Florence

Gilby L. Greene began teaching in a one-room school and went on to become a principal in Kenton County schools, as well as a civic leader in Florence.

Mr. Greene, 86, of Florence, died Saturday morning in St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

A native of Owen County, Mr. Greene had two separate careers, which for many years shared his attention: as an educator and as a council member and vice mayor of Florence.

"He was a very effective member of council for many years. He was always a gentleman," said Florence Mayor Evelyn Kalb.

"He was well thought of in the community. He was usually the No. 1 vote-getter in council elections," recalled former Florence Mayor C. M. "Hop" Ewing. He and Mr. Greene served together in city government for more than two decades, most of the time with the latter as his vice mayor, said Ewing.

"He went to school at Eastern Kentucky, and started out in a one-room school in Owen County. He taught in Florence for a couple of years and then was at Dixie Heights High School for about 20 years," said Mr. Greene's brother, R. N. Greene.

Mr. Greene is probably best recalled at Dixie Heights as an algebra teacher, his brother said. Mr. Greene later was principal of Park Hills Elementary School and Turkey Foot Junior High School before he retired years ago.

Mr. Greene was a past president of Florence Rotary and a member of the Kentucky and Northern Kentucky education associations. He was a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Florence Baptist Church.

Mr. Greene's wife, Rose L. Greene, died in 1997.

Other survivors include daughters, Jane Piercefield of Villa Hills and JaNelle LoPresti of Taylor Mill; a son, Gary Greene of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a brother, Woodrow Greene of Walton; sisters, Helen Lowrance of Frankfort and Geneva Phillips of Erlanger; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Florence Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church, 283 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042; or the American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.
