Minnie Runyon
Minnie Scalf Runyon, 80, of Hardy, Kentucky, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

She was born Sept. 10, 1923, at Hardy, a daughter of the late Willie and Verdie Varney Scalf.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Runyon; two daughters, Gertrude Chapman and Judith Ball; and one brother, Luther Scalf.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Belfry Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include five sons, L.D. Donald and Ricky Runyon, both of Hardy; Reaford Runyon of Wellington, Kentucky, Larry Runyon of Olive Hill, Kentucky, and Carlos Runyon of Ypsilanti, Mich.; five daughters, Mary H. Cundiff of Taylor, Mich., Margarett A. Towlar of Canton, Mich., Connie Cornely Westerville, Mich., Phyllis Hager of Ransom, Kentucky, and Bernice Hurley of Hardy; one brother, Thomas Scalf; four sisters, Francis Ray, Mary Jackson, Augusta Harrison and Victoria Westmoreland; 40 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky with Minister Buddy Kendrick officiating. Burial will follow in Reed cemetery at Turkey Creek, Kentucky

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call anytime Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the funeral home. A special service is set for 6 p.m.

Rogers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Orville Booth
Orville Booth, 75, of Phelps, Kentucky, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the VA Medical Center in Huntington.

He was born Nov. 22, 1927, at Phelps, Kentucky, a son of the late Enoch and Laura Hurley Booth.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Booth was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Ann Silvester.

He was a self-employed technician and veteran of the United States Air Force and Navy, having served in World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Blanche Hathaway Booth of Phelps; two sons, Michael Booth of Phelps. and James Booth of Dallas, N.C.; one daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Sanson of Phelps; two brothers, Sidney Booth of Melbourne, Fla., and William "Willie" Booth of Kermit; one sister, Lennie Estep of Clyde, Ohio; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Phelps Funeral Services' Chapel with the Rev. Earl Jones and the Rev. Bill Cornn officiating. Burial will follow in Booth Family cemetery at Phelps.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at the Phelps Funeral Services' Chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps Funeral Service at Phelps.

Mahaley Jude
Mahaley Maynard Jude, 75, of Burnwell, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Born April 10, 1928, in Martin County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Elijah and Virgie Maynard, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Jude was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James (Tom) Jude; sons, Harvey and Billy Jude; and sisters, Ollie Jude, America Jude, Kate Jude, Gladys Jude and Mary Lowe; and great grandson, David Joseph Maynard.

Surviving are her sons, Clifford (Rachel) Jude of Breathitt Co., Kentucky and Robert (Buck) and Mildred Jude of Martin Co.; daughters, Hessie (Natia) Avitia of Ft. Myers; Cliston (Pete) and Sadie Jude of Lawrence Co., Kentucky, Vondie Jude of Burnwell; Bonnie and Willie Mullins of Milan, Mich., Ed and Ruby Jude of Burnwell; Armenda (Mindy) and Trent Bevins of Burnwell; Mary Jude of Martin County and Julie and Quentin Bailey of Burnwell; brothers and sisters, Bill and America Maynard, Robert and Ollie Maynard, and Sara and Russell Kirk, all of of Martin Co.; Isabelle Smith of Varney, W.Va.; 28 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, 11 a.m., at Martin County Mission of Freewill Baptist Church with Old Regular Baptist Church ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Jude cemetery, Burnwell.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Saturday at the Martin County Mission of Freewill Baptist Church at Wolf Creek.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky

Clayborne Hayes, Sr.
Clayborne Hayes, Sr., 75, of Beauty, Kentucky, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 29, 1928, in Floyd County, a son of the late Chester Arthur and Effie Hayes Moss.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Joyce Hayes; one brother, Tom Hayes of Louisville, Kentucky; three sisters, Nell Calborne of Jeffersonville, Ind. and Pauline Allen of Paintsville, Kentucky and Carold Eiffler; one daughter, Pamela Hayes; six sons, Stephen, David, Larry Jack, Chester Arthur, all of Louisville; Gary Hayes of Marrowbone, and Clayborne (Tom) Hayes of Warfield, Kentucky; Blanch Hayes (mother of the children) of Louisville; daughter in-law, Janice Hayes of Warfield; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Richmond Callahan Funeral Home with the Rev. Edd Caudill officiating. Burial will follow in Hayes Family cemetery in Lawrence County, Kentucky

Sylvia Arnsparger

Sylvia M. Arnsparger, 77, of Salisbury, Md., died Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at Wicomico Nursing Home. Born in Stone, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Jim Hensley and Rady Carter Hensley.

Mrs. Arnsparger was the owner and operator of Sylvia's Beauty Salon in Salisbury. She was also a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was active in many community endeavors, including Wicomico Chapter 91 ­ Order of the Eastern Star, Wicomico Women of the Moose, and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Mrs. Arnsparger is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Herbert Shrieves, of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two grandchildren, Janet Shrieves Wood, of Morgantown, WV, and Michael Shrieves, of Angier, NC; two brothers, Robert Hensley, of Huntington, WV, and Bill Hensley, of Salisbury, MD; and one sister, Betty McCormick, of Williamson WV.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 11:00 AM at Holloway Funeral Home, with calling one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Arrangements are being handled by Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804.

Jeanette Pinson

Jeanette R. Pinson, 72, of Raccoon, Kentucky, died at Pikeville Methodist Hospital on Tuesday, January 6, 2004. She was born in Pike County on December 18, 1932, the daughter of the late Frank Adkins and Zettie Charles Adkins Bentley.

She is survived by her husband, Rockman Pinson of Raccoon, Kentucky; two sons, Steve Pinson and his wife Sherry and Robert (Woody) Pinson, all of Zebulon, Kentucky; one daughter, Robin Pinson and Greg Horn of Raccoon, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Pamela (Kent) Newsome, Annette Thacker, April Worrix and Robert Brian Pinson; three great grandchildren, Kristen Thacker, Kolby Newsome and LaKota Worrix; two sisters, Betty Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky and Faye Morley of Raccoon, Kentucky

Visitation for Mrs. Pinson will be Wednesday, January 7, 2004 and Thursday, January 8, 2004, from 6 - 10 p.m. in the Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with services nightly at 7 p.m. The pallbearers will be Kent Newsome, Greg Horn, Larry Morley, Gary Morley, Bob May and Paul Funk.

Funeral services will be Friday, January 9, 2004 in Thacker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. with Billy Compton officiating.

Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young cemetery on Chloe Road, Pikeville, Kentucky

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thacker Memorial Funeral Home, Pikeville, Kentucky

Ermal Hatfield

Ermal Hatfield, 73, of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born February 12, 1930, in Coleman, Kentucky, to the late Ward Hatfield and Ida Coleman Hatfield, he was a retired coal miner having worked 32 years for Kentland Elkhorn. He was a member and a deacon of the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church, a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and a former chairman of the Republican Party. Mr. Hatfield was a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Emma Jane; two brothers, Opa and Granville Hatfield; and one grandson, Jonathan Chad Hunt.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ruth Hackney Hatfield of Phelps, Kentucky; daughters, Janet Hunt (Gary) of Phelps, Kentucky and Karen Smith of Phelps, Kentucky; brother, Fonso Hatfield (Glennis) of Phelps, Kentucky; special friend, Linton Kender; four grandchildren, Jody Hunt (Heather), Jarred Hunt (Amy), Shannon Smith (Bucky), and Stephanie Mullins (Bobby); two step great grandchildren, Andrew and Payton Mullins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2004, 1 p.m., at Phelps Funeral Services' Chapel with Revs. DeWitt Furrow and Earl Jones Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Ermal Hatfield cemetery, at Phelps, Kentucky Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Members of the Peter Creek Presbyterian Church's Men's Sunday School class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the chapel, at 5 p.m., with services nightly at 7 p.m.

Elsie McCoy Conn Rains
Elsie McCoy Conn Rains, 90, of Pikeville, Kentucky, died Sunday, January 25, 2004. She was born October 16, 1913, in Pike County, Kentucky to the late Samuel and Mary Coleman McCoy.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 29, 2004, 2 p.m., at Thacker Memorial Funeral Home, Pikeville, Kentucky, with Owsley Freewill Baptist ministers officiating. Burial will follow in Annie E. Young cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at Thacker Memorial Funeral Home.

James Albert "Whitey" Howard
James Albert "Whitey" Howard, 68, of Debord, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004. He was born January 20, 1936, to the late James M. Howard and Cora Sherman Howard.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 29, 2004, 11 a.m., at Phelps & Son Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky with visitation held after 4 p.m. Tuesday and all day Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Ermal Hatfield

Ermal Hatfield, 73, of Phelps, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, in Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1930, he was a husband of Ruth Hackney Hatfield of Phelps, Kentucky

Lake Goble
Lake Goble, 86, of Debord, Kentucky. passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Thompsonhood Veterans Center, Wilmore, Kentucky

He was born October 25, 1917, in Martin County, Kentucky, to the late Frank C. and Maggie Ward Goble.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sisters, Ernest Goble, Exie Jude, Olga Clickenger and Zella Hartman.

Surviving are his wife, Veatrice Pack Goble of Inez, Kentucky; sons, Harold Roger Goble of Inez, Kentucky, Gordon F. Goble of Inez, Kentucky and John K. Goble of Debord, Kentucky; daughters, Glenda F. Ramey of Columbus, Ohio and Joyce Eisnaugle of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brothers and sister, Edwin M. Goble of Roy, Utah; Dave Goble of Jackson, Mich., Oscal Goble of Inez, Kentucky and Okla Blackburn of Inez, Kentucky

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 11 a.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky with Phillip Kirk and James Maynard officiating. Burial will follow at Highlands Memorial Park, Staffordsville, Kentucky

Visitation will be held at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home Monday and Tuesday after 6 p.m.

Marie Roller

Marie Nichols Roller, of Florida, formerly of Pikeville, Kentucky, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Ocala, Fla.

Born Aug. 30. 1931, at Pike County, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late James and Virgie Maynard Nichols.

She was also preceded in death by sisters Mary Nichols, Onie Nichols and Josephine Thacker.

She was self-employed in auto body repair and a member of the Apple Orchard Old Regular Baptist Church.

She is survived by husband, Clarence Roller of Florida; brothers, Troy, Ray, James, "Mont", Johnny and Harmon Nichols, all of Pikeville, Kentucky; sisters, Sue Neal of Raccoon, Kentucky, Gredus Robinson Daniels of Williamson, Ocie Lions of Big Creek.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Community Funeral Home in Pikeville with Old Regular Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial will follow in the Apple Orchard cemetery at Varney, Kentucky

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Glen Blackburn

Glen Blackburn, 68, of Inez, Kentucky, died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Martin County, Kentucky, on Aug. 10, 1935, a son of the late Burgess and Josephine Cline Blackburn.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Blackburn; one daughter, Glenna Rose Blackburn; and two brothers, Earnest Blackburn and Burgess Blackburn.

Mr. Blackburn is survived by his wife, Mary Francis Kirk Blackburn; two sons, Dean Blackburn and Doug Blackburn; four sisters, Udella Blackburn, Emma Lou Sluss, Karen Horn and Celilah Byrd; four brothers, R.B. Russell Blackburn, Billy Joe Blackburn, Donald Lee Blackburn and John Eddie Blackburn; and four sisters, Ida Goble, Phyllis Preece, Monetta Blackburn and Betty Blackburn; eight grandchildren; and two special stepgranchildren, Amanda Romans and Jeff Allen Huxtable.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Inez with Kenny Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan 25, and Monday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home.

William Robinette

William Johnson Robinette, 79, of Stopover, Kentucky, died on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Pike County, Kentucky, on March 10, 1925, to the late Marshall land Matilda Dotson Robinette. He was a retired coal miner. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Griffey Robi-nette; one son, Carl Edward Robinette; and eight sisters.

Mr. Robinette is survived by three sons, William James (Margie) Robinette of Columbus, Ohio, Marshall (Shelby) Robinette of Betsy Layne, Kentucky, and Johnny (Tima) Robinette of Freeburn, Kentucky; four daughters, Jean Ellinor of Tallahassee, Fla., Sue (Billy) Crabtree of Columbus, Lishia (Fred) Billiter of Freeburn, and Elena (Mitch) Lester of McCarr, Kentucky; one sister, Maudie Ferrell of Newport, Kentucky; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Phelps Funeral Services chapel in Phelps, Kentucky, with the Rev. James Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the Hurley cemetery in Majestic, Kentucky

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25, and Monday, Jan. 26, at the funeral home. Special services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Monday.
