Arnold Jerome 'Chick' Ryan Sr.

Arnold Jerome "Chick" Ryan Sr. of Toler, Kentucky, a retired machinist for the Norfolk and Western Railway and operator of a restaurant and motel for a number of years, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, K.

At his bedside were his only son, A.J. Ryan Jr., Williamson attorney; his daughter-in-law, Pam Ryan, and a caregiver.

Ryan, 84, had resided in the Williamson-Pond Creek area all of his life, except for a three-year span (1942-45) when he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.

Ryan had experienced health problems the past year and a half but this in no way deterred him from mingling with friends and acquaintances in public places.

He visited the Williamson Daily News office occasionally, distributing newly minted quarters just as a hobby. A.J. Jr. said his father spent hundreds of dollars in the purchase of the new quarters and gave them out to strangers as well as acquaintances everywhere he went.

Born in Williamson, he was a son of the late Meredith Ryan and Maxine Pegram Ryan, who resided here during their lifetime and were well-known. His father also worked for the railroad. His mother was employed at C.A. "Ham the Seedman" Hammond's seed store for many years as she continued working at an advanced age.

Ryan received his 40-year service pin as an N&W employee in August 1980 from then General Foreman O.W. Carver of the Motive Power Department.

In making the pin presentation, Carver said, "It takes a very special kind of dedication to put in 40 years of productive work as a railroader and Arnold J. 'Chick' Ryan, a machinist with the Motive Power Department, is one of those people."

Ryan retired a year later, the last machinist on the N&W system..

During his nine-year furlough as a railroad employee in the late 1950s after the N&W switched from steam to diesel power, Ryan and his late wife, Eva Phillips Ryan, began operating the 119 Restaurant at Toler, later taking over operation of the 119 Motel. After his recall by the N&W, Ryan and his wife continued operating the motel for a number of years.

Ryan had been a member of the International Association of Machinists and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A Mason, he belonged to O'Brien Lodge 101, AF & AM; the Shriners' Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston, and was a 32nd degree Mason.

He was a member of the Stone United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry W. Ryan and Blaine Ryan.

Surviving in addition to his son and daughter-in-law, A.J. and Pam Ryan, are a granddaughter, Ajay McKenzie Ryan, who he waited for all his life and who he loved more than anything; one sister, Irene Ryan Justice of Kissimmee, Fla.; best friend, Chester; special caretakers, Jean Maynard, Nadine May and Jenny Deskins; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry, Kentucky, with the Rev. Franklin Mounts officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Kentucky The Belfry Chapter #141 DAV and O'Brien Lodge 101 will conduct graveside services.

Honorary pallbearers will be Abe Cantees, Edgar Lee "Red" Stanley, Bob Gilliam, Jack Blackburn, Bill Jarrell, Henry D. Hatfield, Charles "Fuzzy" Keesee, Ivan Albert and Jang Choe.
