Christine Sullivan Slone
Christine Sullivan Slone, 75, of Freeburn, Kentucky, died on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

She was born on March 12, 1928, in Pike County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Rudolph and Tamsey Hunt Sullivan. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God in Jesus Name.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Avery Slone; two brothers, Perry and Ferry Sullivan; and four sisters, Martha Jane Andrew, Bonnie Nickles, Betty Lou Sullivan and Cora Mae McCoy.

Mrs. Slone is survived by one son, Benny Ray Slone of Freeburn; three sisters, Joyce Ann Norman of Kimper, Kentucky, Vada Anderson of Pikeville, Kentucky, and JoAnn Bevins of Steele, Kentucky; two brothers, Benny Sullivan Feds Creek, Kentucky, and Robert Sullivan of Pikeville; four sisters, Verna Pearl Thompson of Monroe, Mich., Zettie Curry of Providence, Kentucky, and Pricie Looney and Mary Beth Looney, both of Grundy, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at the Church of God in Jesus Name in Phelps with the Revs. Opie Harris and Martin Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va..

Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17, with services nightly.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Phelps Funeral Service in Phelps.

Dennis 'Red' Clark
Dennis "Red" Clark, 93, of Pinson Branch, Lower Johns Creek, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2003, at U.K. Medical Center.

Born March 6, 1910, to the late Henry and Emma Pinson Clark, he was formerly employed with Kentucky Power Company as a lineman. He was also a farmer. He was a member of Mayflower Unity Baptist Church. Mr. Clark was a member of Pike County Agriculture Conservation Stabilization Committee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Clark; brother, D. H. Clark, Sr.; and sisters, Elizabeth Burnette, Lena Damron, Mamie Ratliff and Shirley Phillips.

Surviving are his daughter, Shalimar (Mrs. John) LaBreche of Lower Johns Creek; and grandchildren, Dennis John LaBreche of Richmond, Kentucky, Renee Edington of Lexington, Kentucky, Timothy LaBreche of Tecumseh, Mich; and two great grandchildren, Clay Thomas Clark and Katie Michelle, both of Richmond, Kentucky

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 25, 2003, 11 a.m., at Community Funeral Home with ministers Tim McClanahan and Tim Swanston officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinson Family cemetery, Lower Johns Creek, Kentucky

Serving as pallbearers are Dennis LaBreche, Al Edington, Timothy LaBreche, Roger Ratliff, Nelson Burnett, Hal Phillips, Neil Mullins, Tony Mullins, Jason Burnett and Dewitt Crider. Honorary pallbearers are J. W. Mullins, Elster Lyons, Harry Skidmore, Matthew Skidmore, Cecil Setser, Mitch Sesco, Andy Blackburn, and retired Kentucky Power employees Auburn "Wob" Helvey, Freddie Collier, Jess Collier, Sam Carter, Marvin Sword, Emil Mayor, Ottis Blackburn, Clifford Boyd and John Turnley.

Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Monday at Community Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home.

Clinton Sykes
Clinton Sykes, 83, of Elkhorn City, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003, at Pikeville Methodist Hospital.

He was born December 5, 1919 in Pike County, Kentucky

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, 2 pm., at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Johnson Memorial Park, Pikeville, Kentucky

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2003.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home Inc. of Elkhorn City, Kentucky

Caroline 'Wootsie' Ball
Caroline "Wootsie" Ball, 91, of McCarr, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Kentucky

Born August 30, 1912, in Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Emsey Hatfield and Cora Sullivan Hatfield, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Ball was a member of Bluepsprings Freewill Baptist Church for 31 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James T. Alley; second husband, Earl T. Ball; daughter, Ruby Hatfield; brothers, Emsey Jr., Willard, Roy and John Calvin Hatfield; and sisters, Ethel, Goldie, Bessie and Stella.

Surviving are her granddaughter, Pamela (Acie) Hager of Ransom, Kentucky; grandson, Rick Hatfield of Wittensville, Kentucky; brother, Tommy Hatfield of Ransom, Kentucky; sisters, Opal Justice of Brookville, Ind., Fern Hager of Hardy, Kentucky, and Ruth Maynard of Clarksville, Tenn.; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 16, 2003, 11 a.m., at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Emery Varney, Larry Hubbard and Roger Bogar officiating. Burial will follow in the Buskirk cemetery at Buskirk, Kentucky Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home with services at 7 p.m.

She was born September 5, 1939, in Pike County Kentucky

Millard Hall
Millard Hall, 70 years of age, a resident of Stopover, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2003, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky

He was born on August 30, 1933 at Freeburn, Kentucky, to the late Ellis and Hazel Smith Hall. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Eddie Smith; and sister, Delores Sabo.

He was a disabled coal miner having been employed by Eastern Coal Company, a member of the Phelps VFW Chapter 10922 and formerly served as Chaplain, a United State Army Veteran of the Korean War and of the Church of Christ faith.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Helen Dotson Hall of Stopover, Kentucky; daughter, Tammy Lynn (James) Hatfield of Sidney, Kentucky; son, Bryan Ellis (Rose Marie) Hall of Stopover, Kentucky; brother, Darrell Smith of Majestic, Kentucky; sisters, Jessie (Dallas) Ratliff of Phelps, Kentucky, Gloria Jean (Ernest) Dotson of Cave Run, Kentucky, and Rosa Lee Smith of Majestic, Kentucky; grandchildren, Rebecca Ann Justice and Latasha Renee Hurley both of Hager Hill, Kentucky, James Steven Justice and Jesse J. Cody Hall both of Stopover, Kentucky, Austin Hurley of Woodman, Kentucky, and step-grandchild, Brandon Stump of Stopover, Kentucky

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 17, 2003, 12 noon, at the R. S. Jones and Son Funeral Home, Phelps, Kentucky, with Bro. Tennis Daniels and Bro. Claude Sanders Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Buddy Mounts cemetery at Majestic, Kentucky

Military rites will be performed by the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter Number 141, Belfry, Kentucky and VFW Chapter 10922, Phelps, Kentucky

Marie Hackney Stacey
Marie Hackney Stacey, 89, of Hilliard, Ohio, formerly of McAndrews, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2003, at Mill Run Gardens, Hilliard, Ohio.

Born February 20, 1914, in McAndrews, Kentucky, to the late J. T. Hackney and Cora Mullins Hackney, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Stacey was a member of Octavia Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Stacey; two brothers, Orda and Luther Hackney; and three sisters, Lena Shepherd, Dora Alexander and Pauline May.

Surviving are her son, Jerry (Billie) Stacey of Inez, Kentucky; two daughters, Sue (Earnest) Hamilton of Tucson, Ariz. and Julia (Harold) Williamson of Hilliard, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Sandy (Paul) Scarce of Tucson, Ariz., Ron Hamilton of Mattoon, Ill., Melissa W. (Ron) Furnier of Carey, NC, Heather W. (Tony) Gray of Hilliard, Ohio, Jason Williamson of Hilliard, Ohio, Rod (Angie) Stacey of Irwin, Tenn., Jennifer Stacey of Inez, Kentucky, Bonita K. (Phil) Smith of Inez, Kentucky and Chris Preece of Ashland, Kentucky; nine great grandchildren, Jordan Hamilton of Mattoon, Ill., A. J. and Alex Furnier of Cary, N. C., Bryan and Dylan Gray of Hilliard, Ohio, Matthew Stacey of Irwin, Tenn., Dominic Smith, Ashley Evans and Jack Evans, all of Inez, Kentucky; special nephews, Ron May, J. D. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 7, 2003, 2 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with ministers of the Octavia Freewill Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Kentucky

J. R. Smith, 88, of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003, at Winchester Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Winchester, Kentucky

Born September 20, 1915, in Coleman, Kentucky, Pike County, Kentucky, to the late Noah Smith and Caldonia Dotson Smith, he was a retired coal miner having worked over 40 years as a miner. He was a member of the Jamboree Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ellis Smith; three sisters, Annie Lockhart, Matilda Lockhart and Vadie Kinder; and five brothers, Ransom, Bradley, Walter, Don and Roy.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Hackney Smith of Phelps, Kentucky, having married on April 9, 1937; sons, Clarence Smith (Donna) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Jimmy Smith (Vicky) of Morehead, Kentucky; daughters, Shirley Murray (Dennis) of Mason, Ohio, Ann Bolender Cincinnati, Ohio and Darlene Campbell (David) of Charleston, W. Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 16, 2003, 12 noon, at Jamboree Church of God with Revs. Willie Gordon, Marvin Casey and Earl Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the J. R. Smith Family cemetery at Smith Fork of Phelps, Kentucky

Visitation will begin Friday, November 14, 2003, at 6 p.m., at the church with services nightly at 7 p.m.

Justin Michael Fletcher
Justin Michael Fletcher, 19, of Pilgrim, Kentucky, passed away Monday, November 3, 2003, at Highlands Regional Medical Center, Prestonsburg, Kentucky

Born August 1, 1984, in Huntington, W. Va., he was the son of Larry and Donna Rice Fletcher.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Arthur and Cora Fletcher of Pilgrim, Kentucky and Millard and Tamsey Rice of Stepptown, W. Va.; brother, Larry Joe Fletcher of Pilgrim, Kentucky; one niece, Hope Fletcher of Pilgrim, Kentucky; and a host of many relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 6, 2003, 11 a.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Inez, Kentucky with brothers Gary Jude, Kenny Preece and Carter Williamson officiating. Burial will follow at Family cemetery, Peter Cave Road, Pilgrim, Kentucky

Ben Howard Adkins
Ben Howard Adkins, 79, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, died Sunday, November 2, 2003, at Hardin Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Logan County, W. Va., a World War II Army veteran and a member of Freewill Baptist Church.

He retired from Elizabethtown Vocational School in 1986 after 22 years of employment. He was a member of American Legion Post #113, the Disabled American Veterans and a member of Kentucky Education Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morgan and Georgia Watts Adkins; by a brother, Rueben L. Adkins; and by a sister, Cleo Y. Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine West Adkins; four sons, Jerry Howard Adkins, George Michael Adkins and Gregory Kenneth Adkins, all of Elizabethtown and Benny Joseph Adkins of Vine Grove; one brother, Morgan Adkins of Fern Creek; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Darland officiating. Burial will be in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Pearl Jude, 86, of Inez, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at Highland Regional Medical Center.

He was born February 2, 1917, in Martin Co., Kentucky, to the late Jack and Ora Scott Jude. He was a disabled drilling well tool dresser.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Arrowood Jude; a daughter, Etta Mae Moore; a son, Charles Wheatley; two grandchildren; and two brothers.

Surviving are his sons, Henry Jude of Lorrain, Ohio and Link Jude of Inez, Kentucky; daughters, Darlene Borders of Barstoe, Cal. and Angeline Jude and Linda Whitt of Inez, Kentucky; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, 1 p.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, Kentucky with Claude Mollette officiating. Burial will follow at the James-Jude cemetery, Moore Branch at Coldwater.

Visitation will be held at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, Kentucky Thursday from 4 - 6 p.m. and friends from 6 - 10 p.m.. Friday evening church services will begin at 7 p.m.

T.J. Fields
T. J. Fields, 64, of Martin County Health Care Facility, passed away Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at Martin County Health Care Facility.

Born June 7, 1939, in Pilgrim, Kentucky, to the late Earnest and Opal (McCoy) Fields, he was disabled.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Archie Fields.

Surviving are his four brothers, Ray Fields of Inez, Kentucky, Leslie Fields of Paintsville, Kentucky, Walker Fields of Pilgrim, Kentucky and Donald Fields of Lovely, Kentucky; and three sisters, Helen Howard of Pilgrim, Kentucky, Joyce Lockwood of Warfield, Kentucky and Earnestine Scalf of Galloway, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003, 11 a.m., with Rev. Lonnie Smith and Rev. Glenn Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in the Fields cemetery, Tomahawk, Kentucky

Visitation will be Friday from 6 - 10 p.m.
