David Thomas Banks

David Thomas Banks, 57, died Monday, August 13, at his home.

He was a retired director of underwriting for Commonwealth Life Insurance Co. where he worked for 29 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Banks; his stepmother, Virginia Banks; two brothers, William H. Banks, Jr. and J. Fred Banks; and twelve nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Sheryl Lynn Banks in 1999.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, August 16, at Pearson's. Burial will be at Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-3, & 5-8 pm Wednesday.

Memorial gifts may go to the donor's favorite charity.

Warren A. Maxwell

Warren A. Maxwell, 79, died Sunday, August 12, at Hillcreek Manor Nursing Home.

He was a retired engineer for the old International Harvester Foundry; a member of Manual High School and University of Louisville Speed Scientific School Alumni Associations; former member of the Association of Industrial Engineers and past officer of the IHC Retirees Club; active member of the Class of 1936 Greathouse School Alumni Association; leader for the YMCA Indian Guide; and volunteered with Father Maloney's Boys Haven and Junior Achievement.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille C. Maxwell of Louisville; a son, Allen W. Maxwell of Louisville; a daughter, Robin Maxwell Thonen of Louisville; two grandchildren, Brandon Maxwell Thonen and Caitlin Alexandra Thonen; a niece, Joan McGregor; and a nephew, Robert M. Adams.

The funeral and burial services will be private. Visitation will be from 3-5, & 7-9 pm Tuesday, August 14 at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.

Memorial gifts may go to the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Ernest F. Shell

Ernest F. Shell, 79, died Saturday, August 18, at Baptist Hospital East.

He was a native of Clinton, IN; a retired engineer for General Electric Co.; graduate of the Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, IN; and member of Broadway Baptist Church and Jerusalem Masonic Lodge #99 in Clinton, IN.

He is survived by his wife, the former Wanetta E. Helms; two sons, Larry W. and Robert D. Shell; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 10 am Tuesday, August 21, at Pearson's. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3-5, & 7-9 pm Monday, August 20.

Memorial gifts may go to Broadway Baptist Church, 4000 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40207, the American Diabetes Association; or to the Rose-Hulman Institute.

Edith Vatter "Jonnie" Hoge

Edith Vatter "Jonnie" Hoge, a Louisville community activist and volunteer, died Saturday at Norton Hospital after a long illness. She was 75

Hoge a varied, interesting life, full of service to others, her son Cliff Vatter recalled. She went through several "phases" of devoting her time and talent to a particular interest, he said

There was her wrting phase, during which she crafted a series of food columns for The Courier-Journal, giving readers recipes for cooking on boats. This led to her "Southern Living Boating Cookbook," published in 1974, and articles she wrote for several national magazines.

An entrepreneurial phase followed, from about 1975 to the mid-1980's when Hoge owned and operated Paper Paraphernalia, a party paper goods store in the old Bakery Square in Butchertown.

Among her most fulfilling phases was one as community volunteer and activist. She was instrumental in the restoration of the Edison House, the birth home of Thomas Edison, also located in Butchertown.

She also was one of the first women on the vestry at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church; a volunteer and a member of the board of directors of Norton Hospital; and she initiated and developed Project Gingerbread, a fund-raiser for Seven Counties Services Child and Adolescent Program.

Though she never suffered the loss of a loved one to suicide, she helped found Survivors of Suicide Inc. in 1985. She acted as coordinator of the faith-based support group.

For her outstanding community service, she received the Community Service of the Year Award from Seven Counties Services in 1984 and a Bel Award in 1986.

She was the former Edith Louise Johnson, a native of Key West, FL, and a member of Younger Woman's Club of Louisville and the House of Ruth.

She is survived by her husband, William L. Hoge; sons Clifford C. III, William S. and David N. Vatter; a daughter, Mari Louise Livingood; four stepchildren; and 13 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, July 31, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Lane. Visitation will be at the church following the service. Arrangements by Pearson's.

Memorial gifts may go to Survivors of Suicide or St. Matthew's Episcopal Church's Memorial Garden.

Robin M. Briggs

Robin M. Briggs, 79, died Sunday, October 28, at Baptist Hospital East.

He was a native of Bowling Green, KY, and a graduate of Western Kentucky University. He was retired from the Courier-Journal after 32 years where he was Art Director of the Promotion Department. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jayne Briggs; two daughters, Ann Cooper and Sally Galla; a son, David Briggs; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, October 30, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 300 N. Hubbards Lane. Visitation is from 4-7 pm Monday at Pearson's.

Memorial gifts may go to St. Matthews Episcopal Church or to the American Diabetes Association.

Margaret Forman Courtney

Margaret Forman Courtney, died Saturday at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville.

She was born in Detroit, MI, where her family owned ``The Detroit" newspaper. Her father, George C. Forman was in the Navy in World War II, and her mother, Katrina Schermerhorn Forman was a life long volunteer for the Red Cross. The family lived in Carmel, CA, in New Jersey, and elsewhere until settling in Lexington, KY, where her father became a builder. Mrs. Courtney graduated from Henry Clay High School, and attended the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority. During World War II, she made parachutes in a factory. After the war, she married John Upington Courtney at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington. Her husband worked for the U.S. Treasury Dept. and she was a homemaker, a volunteer, an environmentalist and a supporter of The Arts. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, the Junior League, the Younger Womens Club, The Speed Museum, and the Colonial Dames. She was predeceased by her husband and by her sister, Sally Forman Smith.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Forman Courtney and Mrs. Mark A. (Margaret Courtney) Doumas; and two brothers-in-law, Robert E. Courtney of Lexington and Arthur L. Smith of North Carolina; and two grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, at Lexington cemetery. Memorial service: 7 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Second Presbyterian Church, Louisville. Arrangements by Pearson's.

Memorial gifts instead of flowers to any charity.

Arthur E. Field

Arthur E. Field, 65, passed away Wednesday Dec. 12, at 8:10 a.m. his family was at his side.

He was born Feb. 5, 1936 at Mt. Olivet, Kentucky, the son of Elmer and Anna (Lucas) Field. He was a graduate of Rising Sun High School(Rising Sun, In.) in 1955.

He was the owner of the Midas Muffler shops in the Louisville, Kentucky area. He served his Country in the Army, he was a former paratrooper in the 82nd and 101st Airborne, stationed in Germany. He was previously a supervisor for Butternut Bread in Versailles, In. He was a sales agent for Standard Life Insurance Co. and formerly served as Vice-President of Life of Kentucky Insurance Co. He was a former member of the Murat Temple of Indianapolis, In., and he had formerely served as the Worshipful Master at the Versailles Masonic Lodge. He received top sales awards from Midas Muffler and Life of Kentucky Ins. Co. He also earned Dealer of the Year, from Midas Muffler and distinguished sales award from Life of Kentucky Ins. Co.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Ann (Gardner) Field, of Louisville, Kentucky, his son Rod Field and wife Dawn of Louisville, Kentucky, daughter, Molly Schubert of Louisville, KY., daughter Tammy Welch and husband Eric of Cross Plains, In. Granddaughter, Hayley Field, Sarah Schubert, Amber and Meghan Welch. He was preceded in death by his son, William Dewayne Field, his brother, William Ross Field and half brother, Quentin Butler.

Visitation will be held at Pearson's, Friday December 14, from 4-8 p.m. Visitation also will be held at Bovard's Funeral Home in Versailles, In. on Sat. December 15, from 4-8.

Funeral will be held at Bovard's Funeral Home in Versailles, In. on Sunday December 16, at 1 p.m.. Military burial will be in Cliff Hill cemetery in Versailles.

Robert Walton Rounsavall, Jr.

Robert Walton Rounsavall Jr., 87, died Sunday.

He was born in Lexington, KY, on August 22, 1914 to parents, Robert Walton Rounsavall and Ethel Burnett Thomas Rounsavall. He was a graduate of Sewanee Military Academy and attended Dartmouth College. At the age of 24, he founded Dixie Warehouse Co. in 1938, which later became Dixie Warehouse & Cartage Co. in 1947. He was co-founder of the Louisville Space Center (now known as the Louisville Industrial Center) in 1963 together with Louisville & Nashville Railroad and the St. Paul Terminal Warehouse Co. where he served as chairman of the board and director.

Mr. Rounsavall served in the U.S. Marine Corps (28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division) as a 1st Lieutenant during World War II from 1942-45. He saw action on Okinawa and on Iwo Jima and was present there for the famed flag-raising on February 23, 1945.

He served as director of the First National Bank of Louisville, The Kentucky Trust Co., Jefferson Federal Savings & Loan Association, Metridata Computing, Inc. and was a trustee of Norton Children's Hospital. He was past officer and director of the Louisville Chamber of Commerce and the YMCA.

In 1981, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the University of Louisville by then Governor, John Y. Brown. He served in that capacity through 1986. In May of 1995, he received an honorary degree in Public Service from the university. In 1992, he was appointed honorary chair of the University's Fund Drive. In 1997, Mr. Rounsavall made a gift to the University of Louisville School of Medicine Department of Opthalmology for the establishment of the Rounsavall Eye Clinic which is located in the Kentucky Lions Eye Institute.

He was a member of the Rotary Club of Louisville, Louisville Country Club, River Valley Club, Naples Yacht Club, Royal Poinciana Golf Club of Naples, Pendennis Club and St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife, the former Gretchen Collins; two sons, Robert W. III and G. Hunt Rounsavall; a daughter, Gretchen Clark; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Elinor Wiedemann.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Shallcross.

The funeral will be held at 11 am Wednesday, December 12, at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road. Burial in Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation is from 4-7 pm Tuesday, December 11, at the church. Pearson's is in charge of arrangements.
