J. Gordon Baquie'

J. Gordon Baquié, 102, of Louisville, died Thursday, November 27, 2003, at his home.

He was a native of New Orleans, LA, and a former executive vice president and member of the board of directors of Brown-Forman Distillers Corporation. He was an original member of the board of overseers of Bellarmine College and had been a member of the board of directors of the Louisville Philharmonic Society and president of the Louisville Fund. He was a former member of the Boston Club of New Orleans, the New York Yacht Club and the Louisville Country Club.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hélène d'Aquin and John Younes Baquié of New Orleans; his wife, Marguerite Montgomery Baquié; his grandson, David Montgomery Morton of Louisville; and his second wife, Kathleen Hogan.

He is survived by three children, Morel (Deede) Jones and Julie Morton of Louisville and Ronde Baquié of Washington, DC; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 noon Saturday, December 6, 2003, at St. Leonard Catholic Church, 440 Zorn Avenue, with burial in New Orleans. Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, is in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Marguerite Baquié Fund of the JB Speed Art Museum or to Boys' Haven.

Elizabeth Willett Browne Welch

Elizabeth Willett Browne Welch, 92, died Thursday, December 4, 2003 at her home.

She graduated from the Baldwin School, Bryn Mawr, PA and attended Smith College in Northampton, MA.

She is survived by her son, Robert M. Browne; her daughter-in-law, Gloria Gadjen Browne; and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Elliott Hammond, Keen McEwan Browne, William Kennedy Browne II, Baldwin Willett Browne, James Slaughter Browne and Alexander Duncan Butler.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Curtis Welch, Jr. and William Kennedy Browne; and sons, Roscoe Willett Browne. Alexander Cumnock Browne, and Kennedy Willett Browne.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 6, at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road, with burial in Cave Hill cemetery. Visiting at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, from 4-7 pm Friday, December 5.

Memorial gifts may go to Home of the Innocents or the charity of your choice.

Mildred Pence Talbott

Mildred Pence Talbott, 93, of Louisville, died Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at Jefferson Place.

Mrs. Talbott was a former sportswear buyer for the old Stewart's Dry Goods Company and a former manager and buyer for the old Tweed & Tartan. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Woman's Club of Louisville, Hunting Creek Country Club, and Pi Beta Phi Sorority at the University of Louisville, and was an avid bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peyton Tabb Talbott, and a granddaughter, Lucy Talbott Shumate.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Stallard; three sons, Peyton Talbott Jr., Dr. James P. Talbott, and Hudson Talbott; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, December 5, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial in Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 am Friday until the time of the service.

Memorial gifts may be made to Second Presbyterian Church.

Dorothy Vissman Burbank

Dorothy Vissman Burbank, 80, of Louisville, died Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at Pine Tree Villa.

She was retired from General Electric Co., and a former member of Highland Presbyterian Church, the Louisville Chapter of PEO, and Audubon Country Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Burbank, and a brother, Robert Vissman.

She is survived by a son, Mark V. Barter and his wife Kathy; three granddaughters, Whitney Barter, Melissa Barter of Shrewsbury, MA, and Hillary Barter; a brother, Richard Vissman; and two sisters, Ann Graham of Chadds Ford, PA, and Martha Campbell of New Orleans.

A private graveside service will be held at Cave Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Pearson's.

Memorial gifts may go to the Alzheimer's Association.

Ida Belle Montgomery Armstrong

Ida Belle Montgomery Armstrong, 83, of Lyndon, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home.

She was a retired bank manager for PNC/Citizens Fidelity Bank at the Zachary Taylor Branch. She was a graduate of Atherton Girls High School and a member of Beargrass Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Jo Ross; two sons, Jack Armstrong and Jim Armstrong and his wife, Becky; two granddaughters, Carrie McDaniel and Casey Ross Russell; two grandsons, Chris Armstrong and Chase Armstrong; and two great-granddaughters, Caitlin Armstrong and Hannah McDaniel.

Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, April 9, 2004, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday, April 8.

Louise Strange Gibbs

Louise Strange Gibbs, of Louisville, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville's inpatient unit at Norton Healthcare Pavilion.

Born in Fox Chapel, KY, the oldest child of Mabel Claire Penney Strange and Roscoe V. Strange on February 3, 1918, she grew up in a large, close, extended family, attended Louisville Girls' High School and was in the first graduating class of Shawnee High School. On July 18, 1942, she was married to Judge J. Rollins Gibbs, who was a First District magistrate for two terms.

A former member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the American Revolution, she was an avid bridge player for over 70 years; her opponents remember her well. Those who knew her will remember her for her deep affection for those she loved, including friends from her early childhood, many of whom have predeceased her.

Her easy laugh and gentle ways will be much missed by her daughters, Nancy Gibbs Pannier and Jacqueline Claire Gibbs; her four grandchildren, Laura Maredith Howells, Sarah Whyte Pannier Stratton, Robert Dunn Howells Jr. and Hope Stratton Pannier James; her great-grand-children, Stefan Eric Pannier Stratton, Katherine Danmark James and William Robert James; her surviving sister, Helen Strange Wagner; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

A private service will be held at Lawrenceburg (KY) cemetery, where members of her own and her husband's families have been interred since 1803. Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, is in charge of the arrangements.

Grace Lovett Nelson

Grace Lovett Nelson, 91, of Belmont Village, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville's inpatient unit Norton Hospice Pavilion.

She was a native of Benton, KY, a member of Woman's Club of Benton, a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, a member of and teacher at First Methodist Church in Benton and an associate member of Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, A.A. "Pont" Nelson in 1983, and her grandson, Rick Jones in 1996.

She is survived by daughters, Phyllis Sarber of Coronado, CA and Skeet Jones and Punky Arnold, both of Louisville; sister, Aline Saufley of Stanford, KY, and Jane Holland of Benton; brother, John Clay Lovett of Benton; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with entombment in Benton cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.

Memorial gifts may go to Hospice of Louisville, First Methodist Church, 845 US Hwy. 641 South, Benton, KY 42025 or the donor's favorite charity.

James A. Strom

James A. Strom, 54, of Louisville, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Baptist Hospital East.

He retired as a systems manager for General Electric after 28 years of service. He was a native of South Bend, IN, and was a second generation graduate of Notre Dame, and received his MBA from Purdue University. Jim was a member of the Elfun Society and was active in the St. Barnabas' Boy Scout Troop #243 and numerous other civic organizations, as well as activities with his son's school.

He is survived by his wife, Carla Hargan Strom; a son, Richard Donald Strom; his mother, Maxine Marie Strom; a sister, Janice L. Olson and her husband, Gordon; and a brother, Jonathon Strom and his wife, Bev.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Pearson-Ratterman Bros., 12900 Shelbyville Road. Visitation will follow the service until 8:00 pm.

Memorial gifts may go to the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Dorothy Emma Waltrip

Dorothy Emma Waltrip, 98, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Wedgewood Health Care in Clarksville.

She was the former Dorothy Emma Kohler. She was born in Louisville, was a christian and a member of West Broadway Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil E. Waltrip; a daughter, LaMarr Lockard; and two grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons, Donald M. Waltrip (Genevieve) of Palm Bay, FL, Buddy Waltrip (Ellen) of Pisgah Forest, NC, and Richard C. Waltrip (Barbara) of Floyds Knobs, IN; a son-in-law, Sherman Lockard of Cecilia, KY; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, June 5, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial to follow at Cave Hill. Visitation will be after 10 am Saturday.

Memorial gifts may go to Christian Academy of Southern Indiana or Hospice of Southern Indiana.

Cindy Glover

Cindy Glover, 59, of Louisville, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Audubon Hospital.

She was owner of Profit Center and former office manager at Seminon Realtors. She was past president of Women In Networking, a volunteer for the Billy Graham Crusade, and a member of Bible Study Fellowship and Watkins United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Glover; daughters, Lisa Steir and her husband Sean, Shelly Stephens, Kim Shaw and her husband Jay; a sister, Jackie Brooks and her husband David; grandchildren, Chelsey, Chandler, and Charity Stephens; and a son-in-law, Wendell Stephens.

Funeral service to be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, June 3, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Visitation will be from 1-4, & 6-9 pm Wednesday, June 2.

Memorial Gifts may be made to her church.
