Frances Dezern Parks

Frances Dezern Parks, 86, of Louisville, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Sacred Heart Village.

She graduated from Louisville Girls High School and was a active member of Epiphany Sages and Church of the Epiphany Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Joseph W. Parks.

Survivors include a son, Michael Parks; two daughters, Joan Mullineaux of New Albany, IN and Maria Miller; three grandsons; and one granddaughter.

Funeral service will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, June 3, at Church of the Epiphany, 914 Old Harrods Creek Road in Anchorage, with private burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the church from 5-7 pm Thursday, June 3.

Expressions of sympathy may go to Church of the Epiphany's Healing Blanket Ministry or WHAS Crusade for Children.

Katherine Jones Smith

Katherine "Katty" Jones Smith, 80, of Louisville, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at her residence.

Mrs. Smith was a former board member of the Health and Welfare Council, Louisville Theatrical Association, Bellarmine College Women's Council, Maryhurst, Wayside Christian Mission, Kentucky Opera Association, Fillies Derby Festival Organization, Wellspring House, Shakespeare in the Park and Louisville Children's Theater Stage One. She had also been a provisional chair of the Junior League of Louisville, entertainment chair of Breeders' Cup Gala, Bourbon Ball, Derby Museum Ball and 1983 National Federation of Republican Women's Bicentennial, music chair for Hardscuffle, Republican state chair for Youth for Eisenhower, a member of the Executive Committee, former president of Frazier Rehabilitation Center, a former member and secretary of the Executive Committee of Kentucky Heritage Corporation and a former member of the Arts and Music Committee of Cathedral Heritage Foundation.

Mrs. Smith was most recently a member of Frazier Rehabilitation Center Advisory Committee and a board member of Clifton Cultural Center and Jewish Hospital Healthcare Services. She was also the recipient of the Founder's Award in 1997 from the Junior League and Woman of the Year in 2001 for the Center of Children and Family. She had sponsored three Cuban girls through Catholic Charities and Maryhurst and had co-sponsored two Vietnamese families through St. Leonard Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Vertner D. Smith Jr., and two sons and their wives, Charles G. Middleton III (Rosemary) and Lawrence Jones Middleton (Louisa). She is also survived by five stepchildren and their spouses, Mrs. Kyle Bianconcini (Giampoalo), Vertner D. Smith III (Barbara), Farrell C. Smith (Karen) and Christopher L. and Gavin Smith, 14 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 4, at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 2119 Payne Street, with burial in Cave Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 pm Thursday, June 3, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Louisville.

Esther Krug Volz

Esther Krug Volz, 94, a former Louisville resident of 44 years, died Monday, August 2, 2004, in Davenport, Iowa.

Born in Madison, WI, she received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and taught business subjects for several years. In 1941, she married Marlin M. Volz. In 1958, she came to Louisville when her husband was named dean of the University of Louisville School of Law and lived there until 2000. She was active in many community and civic organizations, including the University of Louisville Women's Club, the Crescent Hill Women's Club and the Women's Club of Louisville and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. In addition, she served as the chief administrative assistant to her husband in his long and prominent career as a labor arbitrator.

She enjoyed attending University of Louisville football and basketball games as well as the Kentucky Derby and accompanied her husband to many Super Bowl games. She also enjoyed traveling with her children, to professional conventions with her husband and the time spent at their summer home in Door County, WI.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers, one of whom, Julius A. "Cap" Krug, was the secretary of the interior during the Truman Administration.

She is survived by her husband, Marlin M. Volz Sr.; her three children, Marlin "Hap" Volz Jr. of Davenport, Karen Volz Campbell of Vienna, WV, and Tina A. Volz of Madison, WI; daughter-in-law, Kay A. Volz; son-in-law, George Campbell; and three grandchildren, Ann M. Volz, Morgan Campbell and Kelly Campbell. Also surviving is one sister, Alice MacDonald of Madison, WI.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm Friday, August 6, 2004, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. A graveside service will follow at Cave Hill cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church for the use of the Wesley Community House.

Barbara Jones Hartwell

HARTWELL, BARBARA JONES 86, of Louisville, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Norton Hospital following surgery. At her bedside were her sons, John and David, and her niece, Carol Hartwell.

Barbara was the first female general news reporter for The Louisville Times. Her first newspaper experience came during her senior year of high school when she was a regular contributor to her home town paper, the Mayfield Messenger. That same year, she placed first in a state-wide English competition, winning a scholarship to Transylvania College in Lexington, KY, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and graduated in 1939. Barbara joined The Louisville Times during World War II. Shunning assignments for the society pages, she asked for and was given news reporting responsibilities. It was during this period that she met Warren Hartwell of Denver, CO. Upon his return from service in Europe, they married in June of 1945, a marriage which lasted 52 years until Warren's death in 1997. Barbara was also very active in the women's movement within the Episcopal Church, serving on several committees of the Diocese of Chicago (IL). Warren retired in the late 1970s and they returned to Louisville, where

Barbara was a member of volunteer groups like the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women. A progressive Democrat her entire life, Barbara remained actively supportive of political change, both locally and nationally, until her death.

Barbara is survived by her sons, John Hartwell of Westport, CT, and David Hartwell of Durham, NC; sister, Juliette Jones of Louisville; brothers, Tudor Jones of Naples, FL, and Henry Jones of Mayfield; granddaughters, Chloe and Kathryn Hartwell; and grandsons, Elliot and Zach Hartwell.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 2004, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Lane, with burial in the church memorial garden.

Charles H. Asher Sr.

Charles H. Asher, Sr., 91, died Thursday, October 7, 2004, at the Forum at Brookside where he resided for the past ten years.

He was a native of Pineville, KY, and was a retired engineer after 26 years with American Standard. Mr. Asher was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he formerly served as a deacon and elder.

He served over 40 years on the Board of Directors of his family's company, Asher Land and Mineral Limited, retiring in July of 2004.

He is survived by two daughters, Jane A. Coomer (Stephen) and Mary A. Yarmuth (William); a son, Charles H. Asher, Jr.(Paula); six grandchildren, Jeffrey Rasco, Betsy Coomer, Michael Rasco, Christopher Coomer, Jonathan Asher, and Jacob Yarmuth; four great-grandchildren, Tawny Nutter, Jackson Rasco, Savannah Rasco, and Stephanie Rasco; and one sister, Jean Asher Pomeroy.

The family would like to recognize and thank the many friends and staff at the Forum.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, October 11, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation is from 1-4, & 6-8 pm Sunday, October 10.

Memorial gifts may go to the Wayside Christian Mission or The Healing Place.

Rose C. Fischer

Rose C. Fischer, of Anchorage, died Friday, October 8, 2004, in Louisville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry H. Fischer.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda F. Wheeler and Karen F. Mayer; a sister, Edna C. Johnson; two brothers, Phillip J. and Rich W. Casabella; and two granddaughters, Rose Marie Wheeler and Eleanor Astrid Mayer.

The funeral service will be held at 1 pm Monday, October 11, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Burial will be at Cave Hill. Visitation is from 4-8 pm Sunday, October 10.

Memorial gifts may go to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth Robert Tuggle

Kenneth Robert Tuggle, 55, of Louisville, passed away early Thursday morning, October 7, 2004 at Norton Suburban Hospital.

Ken, the only child of Fred B. and Roberta "Bobbie" Tuggle, was born in Ashland, KY on March 14, 1949. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1972 with a B.S. degree. He had been a salesman for Lillie Hoffman Cooling Towers and Porter Industrial Coating.

In 1989, he survived a near fatal auto accident and has lived with his parents for the last fifteen years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am Monday, October 11, at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with cremation to follow. Visitation is from 3-6 pm Sunday, October 10.

Robert C. Somers

Robert C. Somers, 82, of Louisville, died Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville's inpatient unit at Norton Healthcare Pavilion.

After 38 years of service, he retired from LG&E; as senior vice president of operations. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Corps of Engineers. He served as superintendent of his Sunday school, as well as a church deacon and treasurer, had served on various committees in his neighborhood, had been an active leader in the Boy Scouts and was a past member of the Engineers and Architects Club and Optimist Club.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Sue; daughter, Jacqueline Shadle and her husband, Clark; two sons, Robert C. Somers Jr. and his wife, Susan, and Russell S. Somers and his wife, Irena; five grandchildren, Rob Shadle and his wife, Amanda, Todd Shadle, Jessica Somers and Lyle and Liam Somers; and a great-granddaughter, Aubrey Shadle.

A private funeral service will be held at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Louisville.

Juliette Jones

Juliette Jones, 79, of Louisville, died Monday October 4, 2004, at the Episcopal Church Home. At her bedside were family and friends.

Ever mindful of the needs of others, Julie lived her life with caring love for family and friends, deep faith in the Episcopal Church, and a lifelong commitment to service in the community.

A native of Mayfield, Kentucky and a graduate of UK, Julie began her career of helping others as director of religious education for St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Louisville in the mid-1950’s. In the 1960’s she served as executive director of the Volunteers Bureau of Louisville, and then for five years she was executive director of the YWCA, which was the predecessor to the Center for Women and Families.

From 1972 to 1987 Julie was executive director of Senior House, where she became a tireless advocate for senior citizens throughout Jefferson County. Under her direction Senior House grew rapidly both in numbers of clients served and in programs offered, and her fund-raising efforts insured that the organization could respond to new needs as they were identified. When she stepped down from the leadership of Senior House the Mayor and City Council honored her for her work.

In addition to her work at Senior House, during this period Julie was a leader in the Metro United Way, serving on the board for eleven years and as co-president of the Executive Council for two. She was also on the Board of the Kentucky Association of Older Persons, a member of the Delegate Council of the National Institute of Senior Centers, as well as serving on numerous committees and study groups for community improvement.

Julie’s professional career culminated at the Gheens Foundation where her extensive experience in community service management enabled her to serve the many institutions that received grants from Gheens. She retired in 2003.

Julie is survived by her brothers Tudor Jones of Naples, Fl and Henry Jones of Mayfield, KY; and by eight nieces and nephews. Her older sister Barbara Hartwell of Louisville died this past July.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 8, 2004, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 330 N. Hubbards Lane, with burial in the church memorial garden.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Episcopal Church Home, 7504 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40222.

Claud I Emrich Jr

EMRICH, CLAUD I., JR., 81, of Louisville, died Monday, December 6, 2004, at Jefferson Manor.

He was the retired president and CEO of VanZandt, Emrich & Cary Insurance Agency and a Naval officer in World War II. He was a past president of the YMCA Men's Club, a past member of the Rotary Club of Louisville, river captain and director of Louisville Boat Club and past commander of Louisville Power Squadron. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, US Yacht Racing Union, Kentucky Lake Sailing Club, Hope Town Bahamas Sailing Club, Pensacola Beach Yacht Club, St. Xavier Alumni Association and University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

He served on the Health & Welfare Council and was chairman of the Information Center for the Chronically Ill. During his term, he organized "Meals on Wheels" and "Home Aids." He was the first chairman of Trustees of the City of Brownsboro Village, an inspection officer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and served three years as chairman of the membership of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, the former Charlotte Caldwell; two sons, Claud I. Emrich III (Mary Jane) and Robert C. Emrich (Kathy); and three grandchildren, Brent C. Emrich, Kathryn Braun (Kevin) and Casey Ann Emrich.

His funeral service will be private. Visiting will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.
