ADKINS, Nancy, As dictated by Nancy: "My father was in the Civil War and stationed at Louisa, Kentucky. While stationed there he took the measles and was very ill. My mother heard about it and started with me on horseback from our home on Greasy Creek on that long journey to be with him. When we arrived he was very bad off, and in a few days died. My mother also took the measles and died, leaving me there alone among strangers. I was only two years old at the time.
My Grandmother, Betty Cox, got the news that I was there among strangers and started out alone on horseback to get me. I came back with her and we made our home in the head of Greasy Creek in a little log house which is also remembered as the Richard Coleman Farm.
At night my grandmother and I could hear the Indians, while crossing the hills, giving the Indian whoop, giving signals to other Indians on other hills so they could get together. That would make me and my grandmother very much afraid, being all alone in the head of the creek. I stayed with my grandmother until I was a young woman, and then I married , Isaac EPLING and we had 13 children. In December 1912, I joined the Regular Baptist Church and was baptised in that month. The ice was about three or four inches thick, and they had to take an axe and cut it and shovel the ice under to get enough space to baptize me. I took membership with the Pine Grove Church at Lookout, Kentucky, and in January, the second Saturday, me and six more got out letters, being in an arm from that church, organized the Rockhouse Church, January, the 3rd Saturday, 1913"
This is the history my mother gave of her life before her death, she being age 94 at the time of her death. Written by her son, Grant Epling
