Dorothy Porter, first-grade teacher

Dorothy L. Porter didn't enter the teaching profession until later in life, and it was a move she never regretted.

"She thought there was nothing like it," said her husband, John J. Porter.

Mrs. Porter, 80, of Edgewood, died Saturday afternoon in Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.

She was a retired teacher with the Kenton County public schools, teaching the first grade at Crescent Springs and Caywood elementaries. "She thought the first grade was very important because it established habits for a youngster to follow throughout his education," said Porter.

His wife had worked at various jobs, including sales, and at age 40 began school at the Northern Kentucky Community College.

"I suggested she go there and take some art courses or something, but the next thing you know she was taking a full education course," Porter recalled.

It took Mrs. Porter about 11 years to earn her degree, and all the while she taught in the Kenton schools, her husband said. She ultimately retired in 1977, the same year he retired from the insurance business.

The Porters traveled extensively in retirement, taking four auto trips to California by different routes, and spent several winters in Florida, Porter said.

When the Porters went to restaurants locally people would often approach their table and say that they had been first-grade pupils of Mrs. Porter years before, Porter said. "When they told her who they were, she always recognized and remembered them," he said.

Mrs. Porter was an active member of Erlanger Christian Church over the years, and taught Sunday School there, her husband said. She was also a member of the national, Kentucky and Northern Kentucky education associations.

Other survivors include sons, David Porter of Buena Park, Calif., and Michael Porter of Dry Ridge; a brother, C. Robert Knight of Pembroke, Fla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church, Graves and Home, Erlanger 41018.
