Jean Rice Kochera spent a part of her life helping the people in society who can least defend themselves - children.

For several years, Mrs. Kochera, 65, was a High Risk Infant nurse with the Kenton County Health Department. As such, she visited many sick children in their homes and recommended proper medical care.

At times, Mrs. Kochera would recommend that children be taken from an abusive situation, said her husband of 46 years, David G. Kochera of Ft. Mitchell.

"She made sure the kids got good care. She did a good job and was well-liked by the medical field," Mr. Kochera said.

She had retired from the Kenton County Health Department. She was a member of St. Stephen Episcopal Church, Latonia. She was a member of Thomas More Women's Guild.

The Kocheras lived in Louisville for about 20 years before moving to Northern Kentucky 20 years ago.

Mrs. Kochera was an out-spoken woman who fought for children's rights, her husband said. She also enjoyed playing cards and was a good mother and wife, Mr. Kochera said.

"She let you know where she stood," Mr. Kochera said. "She was extremely kind to other people. She had compassion for other people."

Other survivors include a son, David Kenneth Kochera of Louisville; a daughter, Koren Kochera Schrand of Ft. Mitchell; a brother, Kenneth Rice of Erie, Pa.; five grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
