Florence's Mary Gaitskill Graves, early "Super Mom,' devoted volunteer

Mary Gaitskill Graves was a working mother in a time when it was a rarity.

"She worked all her life. She was a working mother when there weren't a lot of them. She tried to do it all, to work, raise a family and attend school activities. She was "Super Mom' before the term was used," said Mrs. Graves' daughter, Gayle Graves Holten of Independence.

Mrs. Graves, 75, of Florence, died Saturday night in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Mrs. Holten, who writes a parenting column for The Kentucky Post, said her mother often remarked about the modern outlooks on rearing children, and how she wished she had had that expertise. "She did her best. People in those days just wanted to do the best for their children, to send them to college and see that they got to church on Sunday," Mrs. Holten said.

Her mother also had an aura of compassion that even strangers would spot, Mrs. Holten said. "People would come up to her on the street and tell her about their troubles, and she would listen. She and my father also helped less-advantaged youngsters in the neighborhood, outfitting them for Easter."

Mrs. Graves was a retired sales clerk with McAlpin's, working in the Crestview Hills department store from the time it opened.

"She worked in the candy department and picked up the nickname "Mary in Candy,' " said Mrs. Holten.

Mrs. Graves also worked as a bookkeeper with B&B Heating Co. in Covington and for Harry's Carpet, Cincinnati.

After retirement she was a volunteer at St. Luke Hospital West.

"She worked in the gift shop. It was just the right niche for her. She took the bus to the hospital. It was the most important thing in the world for her," said her daughter.

Mrs. Graves was a member of Florence Christian Church. She also was a member of the Erlanger Women's Club.

Survivors include her husband, Kreko U. Graves; a son, Lawrence L. Graves of Boca Raton, Fla.; another daughter, Joyce A. Graves of Freedom, Maine; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Family Nurturing Center, 329 Dixie Highway, Suite 202, Edgewood 41017.
