Raymond Eugene Shanks, 64

Raymond Eugene Shanks, 64, of Louisville, died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Parkway Medical Center.

He was a native of La Grange and a former employee of the City of Louisville.

Survivors include his son, Raymond Stinson, and a sister, Thelma May.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 21 at Schoppenhorst and Underwood Funeral Home on Market St.

Visitation was held Wednesday, May 21.

The body was cremated.

George Crawford Jr., 73

George Crawford Jr., 73, Turners Station, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange following a long illness.

He was the son of the late George and Tressie Kelley Crawford Sr. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa Ann Wilson; a grandson, Jeremiah Alan Wilson; and a brother, William P. Crawford.

He was a retired farmer and a member of Turners Station Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Nalley Crawford of Turners Station;two daughters, Margaret Capito of Crestwood and Lynn (Terry) Burgin of Turners Station; three sons, Ronnie Crawford Sr., Phillip Crawford Sr. and Faron Crawford Sr., all of Turners Stations; three sisters, Mary Kaye Brookshire of Pleasureville, Regina McIntosh and Mildred Ellen Toombs, both of La Grange; two brothers, George Albert Crawford of Owenton and Elliston (Shorty) Crawford of La Grange; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, June 26, at Turners Station Baptist Church in Turners Station, officiated by the Rev. Jeff Coombs and the Rev. Robin Roberts.

Visitation was held Wednesday, June 25, and Thursday, June 26, at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.

Internment took place in Turners Station cemetery in Turners Station.

Pallbearers were Barty Wilson, B.J. Crawford, Ronnie Crawford, Phillip Crawford Jr., Faron Crawford and George Tomlin.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to Vision Ministries, Box 162, Campbellsburg, Ky. 40011.

Ann Etta Smith, 79

Ann Etta Smith, 79, Bedford, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange.

She was born in Henry County to the late Bill and Margaret Simpson Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Children of the King Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Smith, two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Smith of Bedford and J. W. Smith of Sanders; two daughters, June Clark of Hardinsburg and Judy Fluhr of Louisville; a brother, Larry Simpson of La Grange; two sisters, Peggy Boyle of Louisville and Beulah Chilton of Hemet, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 24, at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford.

Visitation was held Tuesday, July 22, and Wednesday, July 23, at the funeral home.

Burial took place in New Castle cemetery.

Bernis L. "Suggie" Crawford, 53

Bernis L. "Suggie" Crawford, 53, Louisville, died Saturday, July 18, 2003, at her residence.

She was the former Bernis Shockley, a native of Sturgis, and principal at Barret Traditional Middle School.

She was an alumnus of the University of Louisville, a member of the Jefferson County Teachers Association and St. Gabriel Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Pleas Shockley, and a brother, Daniel Shockley.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Crawford; daughters Laura (Richard) Debord of Catlettsburg and Erin Crawford of Lexington; her mother June Shockley; two sisters, Carolyn Crump of Canmer and Margaret Shockely of La Grange; four brothers, Phillip Shockley of Delray Beach, Fla., Joseph Shockley, Lou Bryant Shockley and Lloyd Shockley.

A funeral Mass was held Wednesday, July 23, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church.

Visitation was held Monday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 22, at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home.

The body was cremated.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

James A. Crawford, 67

James A. Crawford, 67, Louisville, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Baptist Hospital East.

He was a native of Oldham County, a retired food safety and inspection services employee for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he worked for 31 years. He was a member of the Radio City Radio Club.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lecia Crawford.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lou Carol Whitehouse; daughters Lanette D. Crawford and Laura (Frank) Hannon; sisters, Janice Buechele, Peggy Morris, Mary Headen and Sharon Baker; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Monday, July 28, at Embry-Bosse Funeral Home .

Visitation was held Sunday, July 27, at the funeral home.

Burial took place in Evergreen cemetery.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to the Evangel World Prayer Center Building Fund.

Leon Dunbar, 69

Leon Dunbar, 69, Louisville, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at his home.

He was a retired employee for Ford Motor Company's Kentucky Truck Plant.

Survivors include his six sons, Michael, Gary, Stephan, Todd, Tony and Keith Dunbar; two daughters, Toyla and Lisa Dunbar; mother, Anna Mae Murphy; brothers, Jesse Dunbar and Robert Dunbar; six sisters, Betty A. Young, Patricia Giles, Wilma Dunbar, Jacqueline Dunbar, Victoria Dunbar and Cheryl Elzy; 26 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Thursday, July 24, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

Visitation was held Wednesday, July 23, at Williams Funeral Home and at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.

Burial took place in Cave Hill cemetery.

William Arthur 'Bill' Ellis, 91

William Arthur 'Bill' Ellis, 91, Smithfield, died July 27, 2003, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange.

He was born January 26, 1912, in Oldham County, to Anna Laura Swinney and Everett Woods Ellis.

He was a farmer and a member of Ballardsville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Taylor Ellis; children, Doris (Charles) Anderson, Marian Lee (Richard) Coiner, Billie (Arnold) Collins and Hobert Ellis; sister, Mary Belle Conrad; seven grandchildren, Debra Nelson, Lisa Quinn, Tim Rossell, Scott Collins, Kevin Collins, Kim Stankey and Vanessa Roberts; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, at Arch L. Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home in La Grange.

Visitation will be held 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday.

Burial will take place in Valley of Rest cemetery in La Grange.

Pallbearers are Arnold Collins, Kevin Collins, Charles Anderson, William Gerald Taylor, Arnold Oldham and John Pierce.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to Ballardsville Baptist Church Life Center Building Fund.

Carl W. Heilman, 97

Carl W. Heilman, 97, formerly of Pleasureville, died Saturday, July 27, 2003, at Suburban Medical Center in Louisville.

He was born July 9, 1906, in Shelby County, to Leonard Heilman and Margaret Mitchell Heilman.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Cropper Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Trustee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Wood Heilman.

Survivors include his daughters, Peggy (Roy) Long of Louisville and Betty Ann (Shelby) Clark of Centreville, Va.; grandchildren Beth and Bill Filiatreau of La Grange and Noel Clark of Berkley, Calif.

Services were held Wednesday, July 30, at Shannon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Herbert Slaughter officiating.

Visitation was held Tuesday, July 29, at the funeral home.

Burial took place in Pleasureville cemetery in Pleasureville.

Elizabeth JoAnn Hooper, 65

Elizabeth JoAnn Hooper, 65, Crestwood, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at her residence.

She was a native of Lebanon, retired from Phillip Morris USA with 30 years services and a member of Eastside Praise Church of God on Billtown Road.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel W. Hooper; a son, Tim Buley of Louisville; sisters, Geraldine Jacobs of Tulsa, Okla. and Mary Margaret Guerra of Portola, Calif.

Services were held Saturday, July 26, at Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood, with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating.

Visitation was held Friday, July 25, at the funeral home.

Burial took place in Louisville Memorial Gardens West in Louisville.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of memorial contributions to the memorial fund of Eastside Praise Church of God on Billtown Road.
