Glen R. Charles, 76

Glen R. Charles, 76, of Crestwood, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.

He was a native of Twila, a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired principal from the Sidney and Findlay Ohio school systems and a member of Crestwood United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Lee Coldiron Charles; a son, Randy Charles of Crestwood; a daughter, Duana Wilburn, of Crestwood; two brothers, Herman and Thurman Charles of Louisville; a sister, Elizabeth Osboure of Corbin; two grandchildren, Alayna and Garret Wilburn of Crestwood; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood.

Memorial gifts may be made to Baptist Hospital East Palliative Care Unit, 4000 Kresge Way, Louisville, KY 40207.

Alberta "Aunt Bee" Willhoyte Hall, 90

Alberta Willhoyte Hall, 90, of Louisville, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 at Baptist Home East.

She was a native of Prospect, a retired employee of Medical Towers South restaurant and a member of Prospect Christian Church.

Survivors include a brother, Howard D. Hall; eight nieces, Carolyn Fenwick, Deborah VanMeter, Carla Webb, Kathy Benish, Robin Giardin, Phyllis Block, Judy Dales and Holly Morris; two nephews, Alan and Bruce Hall; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were Dec. 1 at Nunnelley Funeral Home in Louisville, with entombment following in Resthaven Memorial Park.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Home of the Innocents.

Dr. John C. Kerce, 81

Dr. John C. Kerce, 81, of La Grange, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at his home.

He was a native of Rome, Ga., a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army during World War II, a minister at churches in College Hill, La Grange, Winchester and Frankfort, superintendent of the Lexington district of the Methodist Church and interim pastor at Crestwood United Methodist Church. Dr. Kerce was a member of the Fortitude Lodge No. 47 F and AM of La Grange, Kosair Shrine, the Scottish Rite of Louisville, president of the Methodist Board of Pensions of the Methodist Church, Chairman of Christian Social Concerns, the Board of Trustees of Wesley Foundation at U of K and U of L and past president of La Grange Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Kell Kerce; a son, Anthony; and brothers, Frank Q., Ralph B. and J. Nevin Kerce.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan M. (Dan) VanderMeer of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Rosann K. (Dennis) Hargrove of La Grange; two grandchildren, Ryan A. and Allison M. Hargrove; two brothers, Robert E. Kerce of Smiths, Ala. and Howard E. Kerce of Madison Miss.; and a sister, Sarah Kerce Howe of Rome, Ga.

Services were Sunday, Nov. 30 at Crestwood United Methodist Church. Arch L. Heady Radcliffe in La Grange handled the arrangements and burial was in Eastview cemetery in Rome, Ga.

Memorial gifts may be made to Crestwood or Covenant U.M.C. building fund, the Kidney or Heart Associations or Hospice of Louisville.

Margaret Burge, 86

La Grange

Margaret Elizabeth Snyder Burge, 86, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 in La Grange.

She was born April 18, 1917 in La Grange to the late Robert Henry Snyder and Viola Button. She was a homemaker and member of the La Grange Literary Club, Oldham County Historical Society, secretary/treasurer of Oldham County Democratic Party and La Grange Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her son Robert S. Burge.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Lucy (Peggy) Burge of La Grange and Mary Elizabeth (Missy) Bryant of New Castle; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were March 26 at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Naftz of La Grange Christian Church officiated with burial at Valley of Rest cemetery.

Pallbearers were Keith Simpson, Kyle Simpson, Richard Morris, Dean Johannes, Wayne Theiss, Kevin Dick, Danny Doty and Larry Doty.

Memorial gifts may be made to La Grange Christian Church.

Harold Sterling Burton, 79

La Grange

Harold Sterling Burton, 79, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 in Louisville.

He was born May 14, 1924 in Pike County to John Frank Burton and Lucille Newberry. He was a boilermaker and member of union local 40.

He was preceded in death by his son, Harold Ray Burton and grandson, Jimmy D. Burton Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Mila York Burton; a daughter, Marilyn Downey of Buckner; three sons, John Lee Burton of Lexington, William Sterling of La Grange and Jimmy D. Burton of Greenville; three brothers; two sisters; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were March 31 at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Naftz of La Grange Christian Church with burial at Valley of Rest cemetery.

Pallbearers were Donald Downey, J. R. Robinson, Jody Herold, Charles Cook, David Payton, Christopher Kampschaefer.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Louisville.

Helen Lonsburry Koritar, 76

La Grange

Helen Lonsburry Koritar, 76, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Pewee Valley.

She was a native of Jefferson County, a retired medical assistant and a member of the Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mickey Lonsburry and a daughter, Robin L. Lawrence.

Survivors include her daughter, Vicki (Curtis A.) Geoghagan of La Grange; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Lonsburry; a brother, Gilbert L. Smith, Jr. of Georgia; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchilden.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Stoess Funeral Home in Crestwood handled the arrangements.

William F. Nalley, 62

Crestwood

William F. Nalley, 62, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004.

He was a native of Washington County, a veteran of the Vietnam War, retired from Ford Motor Auto Plant and a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Pewee Valley.

Survivors include his wife, the former Donna Geary; three sons, William Stephen Nalley of Crestwood, Christopher Wayne Nalley of Mt. Washington and Stephen Nathan Nalley of Crestwood; two daughters, Barbara Ann Davis of Crestwood and Karen Marie Monroe of Crestwood; brothers, Joseph Andrew Nalley, James Harold and Joseph Albert Nalley of Lyndon, James David Nalley and Donald Ray Nalley of Louisville; two sisters, Mary Zelma Dye of Crestwood and Mary Darlene Jacobi of Lyndon; a step-son, Jeremy James Tarter; a step-daughter, Amanda Kay Freeman; and four grandchildren, Heaven L. Nalley, Alyssa M. Monroe and Gregory and Sarah L. Zollman.

Services were March 27 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. The Rev. Ron Dumkoff officiated with burial in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Chris Nalley, Steve Nalley, Nathan Nalley, Mark Monroe, Dave Davis and Jeremy Tarter.

John Raabe II, 74

Prospect

John Raabe II, 74, died Sunday, March 21, 2004.

He was formerly of Connecticut, a native of Long Island, N.Y., CEO and partner of J.R. Overseas Co. and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Clara Raabe.

Survivors include his wife, Jean H. Raabe; a son, Michael Raabe of Gloucester, Mass.; two daughters, Clair Raabe of Canaan, Conn., and Lee Ann Lyle of Louisville; six grandchildren, Jessica Lyle, Roxann Raabe-Fellerman, Dylan Levesh-Raabe, Zachary Levesh-Raabe, Ian Raabe-Fellerman and Morgan Lyle; and one sister, Ann Halloran of Naples, Fla.

Services were March 25 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Pewee Valley.

Pearson-Ratterman Bros. Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Memorial gifts may be made to Baptist Hospital East, Cardiac Surgery Recovery.

William Smith Jr., 81

LaGrange

William Smith Jr., 81, died Thursday, March 25, 2004.

He was retired from the Ford Motor Co. Kentucky Truck Plant and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, the former Winnie Zehnder; a daughter, Carol A. Snook; a grandson, Harold (Ruth) Snook III; and great-grand-children, Dylan and Shaye Snook.

Services were March 27 at Fern Creek Funeral Home, with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Roy B. Toon, 83

Louisville

Roy B. Toon, 83, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at Crestview Nursing Home in Shelbyville.

He was formerly of La Grange, a retired Kentucky State Fish and Wildlife officer, a member of the Kentucky League of Sportsmen, Jefferson County Sportsman's Club and Evangel World Prayer Center.

Survivors include his two sons, Joe B. (Nancy) Toon of Louisville and Michael (Laura) Toon of Floyds Knobs, Ind.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were March 25 at Pearson Ratterman Bros. Funeral Home, with burial in Evergreen cemetery.

Vardell Everett Whitstine, 90

Crestwood

Vardell Everett Whitstine, 90, died Sunday March 28, 2004 at The Richwood Nursing home in La Grange.

He was born July 23, 1913 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was an independent oilfield superintendent in the Rio Grande Valley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy Eloise Whitstine.

Survivors include his daughter, Charlene Whitstine Staats of Crestwood; a grandson, Sheldon Everett Staats of Louisville; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. on April 4 at the Pearson Ratterman Funeral Home in Louisville. Services will be April 5, also at Pearson Ratterman.

Memorial gifts may be made to the activities funds of The Richwood in La Grange.

Henry Lee Miller, 56

Crestwood

Henry Lee Miller, 56, of Crestwood, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Greystone Nursing Home in Cincinnati.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Long of Crestwood; two sons, Steven and Jason Miller, both of Crestwood; a brother, Marvin Miller; and five grandchildren.

Services were Wednesday at Stoess Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Naftz officiated with burial at Cave Hill cemetery.

Lucy Elizabeth Carter Rankin, 85

Campbellsburg

Lucy Elizabeth Carter Rankin, 85, of Campbellsburg, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Baptist Hospital Northeast.

She was a member of Port Royal United Methodist Church and the daughter of the late Paul and Cordie Lee Carter.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Frances Rankin, and son, Jimmy Rankin.

Survivors include her husband, Kelly Rankin of Campbellsburg; two daughters, Julia Dixon and Becky (Jerry) Durrett, both of Eminence; two sons, Paul C. Rankin of Pleasureville and Jerry Rankin of Campbellsburg; two sisters, Pauline Gatliff of Louisville and Sadie Thompson of Smithfield; two brothers, Jeff Carter of Carrollton and Carroll Carter of Franklinton; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services were Monday at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home with Pastor Ron Laughlin and John Davidson officiating.

Pallbearers were Todd Callis, Wayne Craig, Jerry Durrett, Jeff Chelf, Billy Mason and Mark Potts. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Rankin Jr., Bobby Rankin, Todd Rankin, David Dixon, Jerry Rankin Jr., Paula Chelf, Betsye Rankin Potts, Kellie Sue Dixon, Teresa Courtney, Whitney Durrett and Michael Casey Durrett.
