George Haydon Gardener, 59

George Haydon Gardner, 59, of Caldwell County, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville, following a long illness.

A U.S. Army veteran and member of First Baptist Church in Princeton, he was born July 31, 1944, a son of the late George Louis and Mildred Grace Cartwright Gardner.

Survivors include five brothers, Will Edd Gardner and James Richard Gardner, both of Princeton, Enos Stanley Gardner of Gainesville, Ga.; and Rickey Joe Gardner and Frank David Gardner, both of Caldwell County; a nephew, Matthew Wilson Gardner; and two nieces, Kimberly Dell Oden and Georgia Grace Gardner.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home.

The Rev. Tom Hughes will officiate the service for Mr. Gardner.

Burial will follow in Meeks cemetery.

Graveside military services will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Buell W. Hancock, 78

Buell W. Hancock, 78, of Rockport, Ind., died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health System in Owensboro.

A caster for Peerless Pottery for 41 years, a guitarist for the George Grose Band, and member of AFL, CIO and CLC Local No. 349, he was born March 22, 1925, in Princeton, a son of the late Dorris T. and Ruth Gertrude Triplett Hancock.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Tressa; three sons, James D. Hancock, Larry W. Hancock and William L. Hancock, all of Rockport, Ind.; a daughter, Linda K. Davenport of Rockport, Ind.; seven grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, John T. Hancock and Donnie E. Hancock, both of Princeton, and Billy J. Hancock of Wellsboro, Pa.; and two sisters, Mary R. Hancock of Princeton and Katherine J. Richardson of Hopkinsville.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 29, at Boultinghouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Van Camp officiating.

Burial followed in Sunset Hill cemetery in Rockport, Ind.

Margie E. Rager, 61

Margie Rager, 61, of Hopkinsville, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at 7:20 p.m., following a long illness.

A member of Calvary Memorial Baptist Church, she was born July 17, 1942, in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Leemon and Tylene Moore.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Helton and Wanda Drennan.

Survivors include two children and a son-in-law, Jerry and Margaret Mason and James L. Jackson; four grandchildren, Michelle Pearl and Michael Mason, both of Princeton, Matthew Jackson of Farmersville, and Anslee Jackson of Eddyville; three great-grandchildren, Kristen Arflack, Mason Pearl and Madison Mason, all of Princeton; five brothers, Wilson Moore of Illinois, Chester Moore, Louard Moore, Lester Moore and Leonard Moore, all of Princeton; two sisters, Doris Winstead of Tennessee and Deloris Moore of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Lamb’s Funeral Home in Hopkinsville on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m.

Larry Dale Combs will officiate the service.

Anna Lee Smith, 89

Anna Lee Smith, 89, of Kuttawa, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at 7:20 p.m. at Hilltop Nursing Home in Kuttawa.

A member of Kuttawa First Baptist Church, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Fanny Greer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rosamond Smith in 1993; and a half brother Harvey Lynch.

Survivors include a son, Fred T. Smith of Paducah; two grandchildren, Tom Smith of Minneapolis, Minn., and Audry Ann Meany of Bowling Green; three great-grandchildren, Anna, Sarah and Sam Meany of Bowling Green; and a sister, Elizabeth Doom of Kuttawa.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Eddyville.

Burial for Mrs. Smith will follow the service in Kuttawa cemetery.

Walter "Smiley" Freeman, 82

Walter “Smiley” Freeman, 82, of Caldwell County, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at 9:27 p.m. at Caldwell County Hospital, following a short illness.

A retired mechanic for the Kentucky State Department of Highways and a member and deacon of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church, he was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Trigg County, a son of the late Orbie Jackson and Mattie Beatrice Wadlington Freeman.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ethel Fuller Freeman; five sons, Earl Freeman of Peoria, Ill., William Freeman and Kenneth Freeman, both of Princeton, Charles Ray Freeman of Pisgah Forest, N.C., and Danny Freeman of Dawson Springs; two daughters, Sue Herndon and Linda Poindexter, both of Caldwell County; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emma Bell Calhoun of Trigg County.

Funeral services for Mr. Freeman were conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home.

Burial followed in Freeman cemetery in Trigg County.

Kent Henderson Jones, 48

Kent Henderson Jones, 48, of Cadiz, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at 4:09 a.m. of natural causes at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.

A laborer of Elk Brand Manufacturing in Cadiz and a member of Second Baptist Church in Cadiz where he served on the usher board, he was born June 2, 1955, in Cadiz, a son of Charles Henderson and Dorothy Wadlington Jones, of Cadiz.

Survivors in addition to his parents include two sons, Kent “Shane” Ramsey of Waukegan, Ill., and Grey Jones of Princeton; four daughters, Kechia Jones and Heather Jones, both of Hopkinsville, Kandi Wilson and Chawanita Wilson, both of Cadiz; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Dondi Ray Jones of Cadiz; four sisters, Cheryl Matthews, Felicia Jones, Raven Michelle Pryor and Amy Alane Lee, all of Cleveland, Ohio; and a devoted companion, Norma Jean Wilson of Cadiz.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church.

The Rev. Clarence Terry will officiate the service for Mr. Jones.

Burial will follow in Crown Hill cemetery in Cadiz.

Gamble Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of arrangements.

Edward E. Shumaker Sr., 80

Edward Earl Shumaker Sr., 80, of Villa Ridge, Ill., died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at 3:45 a.m. at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.

A member of the Villa Ridge Union Church where he served as a deacon and a former Sunday School Superintendent, an Army veteran of World War II, who served as a former board member and past chairman of the former Rife Memorial School, Villa Ridge, and former coach of Mounds Summer baseball league, he was born May 14, 1923, at Villa Ridge, Ill., a son of the late Dr. W.E. Shumaker and Floyd (Bour) Shumaker. He was a farmer and retired after 35 years as a state’s sales manager for the Moor Man Feed Company.

He was preceded in death by a son, Edward Earl Shumaker Jr., on Nov. 1, 1993; his wife of 59 years, Emma Francine East Shumaker on May 22, 2003; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Floy M. “Pepper” Tally and Benjamin Mark Tally Sr., both in 2002, Mary Emma George on Sept. 22, 2003, and Lawrence R. George, on Dec. 30, 1987; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Trudy and Robert Peeler of East Cape, Ill., Julie and John Fleming of Barlow, and Susan and Robin Ramage of Metropolis, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Bunny Shumaker of Kennesaw, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Jane Shumaker of Chenoa, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, William Joseph and Lorraine Shumaker of Villa Ridge, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Villa Ridge Union Church, with the Rev. Larry Buckles and Dr. Derek Staples officiating.

Burial followed in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens at Villa Ridge, Ill., with full military honors given by members of the Pulaski County Memorial VFW Post #8891 of Mounds, Ill.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to either the American Heart Association, Heart Cry Missionary Society or the International Bible Translators in memory of Edward Shumaker.

Jones Funeral Home of Villa Ridge, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.

Della Beckner, 68

Della Beckner, 68, formerly of Princeton, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at 5:15 a.m. at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, following a short illness.

A homemaker and member of Harrison Street Baptist Church in Princeton, she was born Sept. 22, 1935, in Ohio County, a daughter of the late Raymond and Lucy Dixon Grooms.

She was preceded in death by a son, John Springfield; and a daughter, Stacy Beckner.

Survivors include three sons, Wendell Springfield of Hopkinsville, James Springfield of Paducah, and Danny Springfield of Morton’s Gap; two daughters, Rechell Springfield of Columbia, S.C., and Stephanie Jones of Hopkinsville; 21 grandchildren; a companion, Robert Bacon of Hopkinsville; four sisters, Kay Grooms of Columbia, S.C., Nancy Barnett, Phebia Manning and Georgia Pepper, all of Hopkinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Sept. 29, at 2:30 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

The Rev. William Holland will officiate.

Burial will follow in Cedar Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pauline D. West, 90

Pauline D. West, 90, a long-time resident of Morgantown, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at Houston, Texas.

A member of the Morgantown First United Methodist Church and a 55-year resident of Morgantown, she was a retired teacher and administrator in the Butler County School System, who continued teaching until 1990 in the Parent and Child Education Program. In 1993, she moved to Houston, Texas, to be with her family.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Sarah Jane West; two grandsons, John A. West and fiance Nikki Morton, and Jason H. West and wife Sona; and a great-grandson, Jay K. West, all of Houston, Texas. Local survivors include two sisters, Sue Dycus and Robbie Mitchell, both of Princeton.

A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home in Morgantown on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m.

Blondell Ortt, 68

Mrs. Blondell Ortt, 68, of Princeton, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at 3:45 a.m. at Caldwell County Hospital, following a long illness.

A retired home health aide, member of Southside Baptist Church and auxiliary member of the American Legion, she was born Nov. 1, 1934, in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Lowell and Opal Cook Haile.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Duel Ortt, on Nov, 6, 1986; and a brother, Jackie Haile.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Eric sand Kathy Ortt of Reidland; a grandchild, Madison Ortt; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Ozell and Kathy Haile of Hopkinsville and Irene Haile.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ronnie Sivells officiating.

Burial will follow in Fairview Church cemetery.
