Sona Inez Howton, 80

Sona Inez Howton, 80, of Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at 3:50 p.m. at Crittenden County Hospital in Marion.

A daughter of the late Herbert and Lonnie Hendrix, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Howton; a son, James D. Howton; and a brother.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Boone and Marcia Miniard, both of Marion; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Krauss of Glen Ellyn, Ill.

Funeral services for Mrs. Howton were conducted Friday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in Mapleview cemetery.

Shirley Massey, 90

Mrs. Shirley Massey, 90, of Caldwell County, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at 6 a.m. at Regional Medial Center in Madisonville, following a long illness.

A retired employee of the Caldwell County High School food services and member of Beech Grove General Baptist Church, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Pearl Lowery Stevens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Massey Sr. in 1991; a son-in-law, Stanley Wallace; a grandson, Rodney Wallace; two brothers, Herbert Stevens and Carl Stevens; and two sisters, Rozelle Wood and Lillian McCoy.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Massey Jr. and Dennis Massey, both of Caldwell County; two daughters, Ella Mae DuRard of Nashville, Tenn., and Dorothy Beckort of Grandview, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Wood of Clay.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton. The Rev. Barry Hix officiated the service for Mrs. Massey.

Burial followed in Beech Grove Church cemetery.

Myrtle Joiner, 79

Myrtle Joiner, 79, of Cadiz, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at 6:27 a.m. at Christian Health Center in Hopkinsville of natural causes.

A retired hostess and cashier from Lake Barkley State Resort Park and member of New Hope Baptist Church, she was born Feb. 12, 1924, in Trigg County, a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Willie Mae Boren Pepper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Joiner, on April 28, 1989; a son, Thomas Harding Joiner, on July 1, 1964; a grandson, Jeffrey Dale Joiner on Jan. 21, 1965; and a sister, Mary Ethel Wyatt.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frankie and Barbara Joiner of Cadiz; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sarah and Buddy Kirby of Peoria, Ill., Peggy Lamb, of Nashville, Tenn., and Faye and Jimmy Stallons of Hopkinsville; 12 grandchildren, Gary Lamb, Stacey Lamb, Lance Stallons, Russ Stallons, David Stallons, Stephen Stallons, Cynthia Crusen, Michael Kirby, Faye Lynn Streitmatter, Kevin Joiner, Jason Joiner and Darren Joiner; 24 great-grandchildren, Amber Lamb, Landan Stallons, Tanner Stallons, Alyssa Stallons, Josie Faye Stallons, Caleb Stallons, Jacob Stallons, Paige Stallons, Aaron Stallons, Bethany Stallons, Ethan Stallons, Elizabeth Stallons, Jeffrey Crusen, Matthew Crusen, Andrea Kirby, Luke Kirby, Ashley Faye Streitmatter, Julie Ann Streitmatter, David Joiner, Scott Joiner, Blake Joiner, Logan Joiner, Derek Joiner and Heather Joiner; and a niece, Mae Belle Wyatt of Hopkinsville.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. at Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz. The Rev. Gary Snyder and the Rev. Todd Gray will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Flat Lick cemetery in Christian County.

Pallbearers will be Darren Joiner, Jason Joiner, Kevin Joiner, Michael Kirby, Gary Lamb, David Stallons, Lance Stallons, Russ Stallons and Stephen Stallons.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3703 Taylorsville Rd., Suite 102, Louisville, Ky. 40220.

W. Donnie Gentry, 59

William Donnie Gentry, 59, of Eddyville, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at 8:15 a.m. at Crittenden County Hospital in Marion.

A member of Crossroads Baptist Church in LBL, he was a son of the late Clarence and Mamie Hill Gentry.

He was preceded in death by a sister.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Engler Gentry; a sister, Lucille Barnes of Eddyville; several nieces and several nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Eddyville. The Rev. John Hagan and the Rev. James Oates officiated the service.

Burial followed in Macedonia cemetery.

Myrtle L. Ward, 95

Myrtle L. Ward, 95, of Princeton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at 5:15 a.m. at Princeton Health Care Manor, following a short illness.

A homemaker and member of Beulah Hill Baptist Church, she was born Nov. 5, 1908, in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Issac R. and Opha Rogers Dearing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Cylman Ward, in 1967; a son, Norman Coy Ward, in 1975; a daughter, Sharon Ward Baker, in 1985; three brothers, Clyde Dearing, C.C. “Jupe” Dearing and Alton “Tony” Dearing’ and a sister, Virginia Glass, in 2003.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ray Douglas and LaDonna Ward of Cameron, Mo.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton. The Rev. Jerry Holeman will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Lance Nichols cemetery in Caldwell County.

Bill Simpson, 83

Joseph William “Bill” Simpson, 83, Dell Drive, Hopkinsville, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at 3:35 a.m., at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville.

A native of Caldwell County, he was born Feb. 28, 1920, the son of the late Lura and Ola Simpson. He was retired from the work training center at Western State Hospital, was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Clara V. Simpson; a son, Capt. Pat Simpson of the Hopkinsville Police Department and a Hopkinsville resident; a daughter, Teresa Combs of Hopkinsville; two grandchildren; a brother, Tex W. Simpson of Prince Anne, Md.; and two sisters, Judy Bates of Princeton and Carole McIntire of Sweetwater, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. at Hughart and Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville.

The Rev. Dr. John B. Ledford will officiate.

Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the World War II Memorial.

Jeff Newell, 41

Jeff Newell, 41, of Louisville, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at his home in Louisville.

Survivors include his father, Wilbur Newell of Eddyville; two brothers, Jay Newell and David Newell, both of Eddyville; and two sisters, Debbie Stewart of Paducah and Jamie Hammons of Princeton.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Newell are pending at Lakeland Funeral Home in Eddyville.

Nola Bruce, 80

Mrs. Nola Bruce, 80, of Dollar Street, Princeton, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at 2:40 p.m. at Caldwell County Hospital, following a long illness.

A homemaker and member of Princeton Church of Christ, she was born July 25, 1923, in Tulsa, Okla., a daughter of the late Willis and Ethel Redd Mallory.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, O.C. Bruce; two sons, Ronald Bruce of Ocala, Fla., and Robert Bruce of Princeton; a daughter, Ethel Whiteaker of Cookville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton. Bill Williams will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Princeton Memorial Gardens.

Paul Mosier, 77

Paul Mosier, 77, of Lyon County, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at 11:40 p.m. at Caldwell County Hospital, following a long illness.

A retired heavy equipment operator for Richland Shell Co. and a World War II Army veteran, he was born Dec. 9, 1926, in Ashland, Ohio, the son of the late Charles and Newttie Mae Brown Mosier.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Marie Bell Mosier; five sons, Rod Mosier of Shelby, Ohio, Kevin Mosier and Tim Mosiery, both of Eddyville, Craig Mosier of Mansfield, Ohio, and Dan Mosier of Lyon County; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn Mosier of Mansfield, Ohio; and a sister, Donna Lewis of Mansfield, Ohio.

Funeral services for Mr. Mosier will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

The Rev. Ronnie Fox will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Oliver cemetery in Lyon County.

John P. Buchanan, 89

John P. Buchanan, 89, died Feb. 9, 2004, at Hilltop Nursing Home in Kuttawa.

Born in Marion, Va., on Nov. 1, 1914, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was discharged honorably following the conflict. Thereafter, he attended and graduated from the University of Chicago, Chicago. Following his graduation from college, he worked for Philco for many years in Greenland on the early warning system for the detection of intercontinental ballistic missiles. After leaving Philco, he worked for the Louisville YMCA for approximately 20 years, retiring in 1985. He resided at Hilltop Nursing Home from June 1997 until his death.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Crounse.

Survivors include a sister, Annabel Brown of Kuttawa; his brother, Pat Buchanan of Williamsburg, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Marion. There will be no visitation.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Royal Oak Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Main St., Marion, Va. 24354; or to the Buchanan cemetery Fund, c/o Mrs. Frank Stewart, 127 W. Strother St., Marion, Va. 24354.

Roth Funeral Chapel in Paducah is in charge of local arrangements.

Johnny Hogan, 61

Johnny Hogan, 61, of Princeton, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at 12:44 p.m. at Caldwell County Hospital, following a long illness.

An operator at Special Metals, member of Union Grove General Baptist Church and a Vietnam veteran, he was born Oct. 16, 1942, in Caldwell County, a son of the late John Hershel Sr. and Olive Pearl Boyd Hogan.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Frances Jewell.

Survivors include his wife, Susie Salyers Hogan; two sons, John Darrick Hogan and Hunter Hogan, both of Princeton; a daughter, Rita Granstaff of Princeton; eight grandchildren; a sister, Donna Rose of Princeton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary A. Wimber, 80

Mrs. Mary A. Wimber, 80, of Princeton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at 1:10 p.m. at Princeton Health Care Manor, following a short illness.

A homemaker and of the Catholic faith, she was born Sept. 10, 1923.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Wimber.

No survivors are given.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. at Gray cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Morgan’s Funeral Home.
