Ruth Edwards, 73

Ruth Edwards, 73, of Manchester, N.J., died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, at her home.

Born Nov. 27, 1932, in Princeton, a daughter of the late Myrtle and Clinton McGowan, she was a member of Community Baptist Church at Manchester, N.J.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Edwards; two sons, Harry Edwards and John G. Edwards.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cassandra Edwards, and Myron and Ann Edwards; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and William Overton, Barbara Edwards, Christina Edwards, Lynette Edwards, and Danita and Oladapo Somoyé, all of Manchester, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Carol Scott of Indianapolis, Ind., and Atlas and Mary McGowan of Princeton; a sister, Evelyn Sullivan of Jacksonvill, Fla.; and several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Jan. 19, at noon at Community Baptist Church at Manchester, N.J.

Elder Alexander Smith officiated the service for Mrs. Edwards, assisted by the Rev. John Eubanks, the Rev. Richard Bell and the Rev. William Jenkins.

Burial followed in New Jersey Veterans cemetery at Arneytown, N.J.

Anderson & Campbell Funeral Service of Manchester, N.J., was in charge of arrangements.

John Thomas Gray, 93

John Thomas Gray, 93, of Evansville, Ind., died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation.

Born in Lyon County and later moving to St. Louis, Mo., where he lived for many years, he was employed by Carter Carburetor, a division of ACF, retiring in 1977 after 38 years of service. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Evansville, Ind., in 1984. He was a member of Fairlawn United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Theodore Gray; and his mother, Etheleen Daniels.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy L. Dycus Gray.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Alexander East Chapel.

Graveside services were conducted at 4 p.m. at Oak Grove cemetery in St. Louis, Mo.

Alexander East Chapel, 2115 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, Ind., was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Thomas “Nubbin” Hibbs, 61

Jerry Thomas “Nubbin” Hibbs, 61, of Providence, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.

A coal miner for 38 years at Dotiki Mines, avid horseman and member of Beech Grove General Baptist Church in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Everett and Essie Marie Hibbs.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Hibbs.

Survivors include his wife, Donna June Smith Hibbs; two daughters, Janell Ipock of White Plains and Jera Kay Hibbs of Providence; a son, John Rowdy Hibbs of Providence, three grandchildren, Megan Marie Ipock, Wesley Wayne Ipock and Cade Gabriel Dodd Hibbs; his stepmother, Vera Hibbs of Henderson; four sisters, Jo Bell Hudson and Patsy Throgmorten, both of Providence, Anna Katherine Lovan of Madisonville, and Roma Lee of St. Clair, Mo.; and two brothers, Anford Hibbs Sr. of Providence and Mike Hibbs of Indianapolis, Ind.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at Melton Funeral Home in Providence. The Rev. Barry Cullen will officiate the service for Mr. Hibbs.

Burial will follow in Beech Grove cemetery in Caldwell County.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until the funeral hour Wednesday.

Rufus “Dude” Cotton, 84

Rufus “Dude” Cotton, 84, of Dawson Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at 8:39 p.m. at his home.

A coal miner most of his life and more specifically a diesel mechanic for the mines, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 in Panama. A member of the Al E. Orten Lodge of Dawson Springs, Lee Wilson Stevens VFW Post, the American Legion Post 310, both of Dawson Springs, and the Lake Grove General Baptist Church, he was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Hopkins County, a son of the late James Moses and Lou Eli Cotton.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorene Carlton and Anna Mae Petty; and four brothers, Bennie Cotton, Lucian Cotton, Lunus Cotton and Morris Cotton.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mildred Sisk Cotton; a daughter, Diane Gilmore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four sons, David D. Cotton of Dawson Springs, Jackie Cotton of St. Charles, Barry Cotton of Tampa, Fla., and Joey Cotton of North Dakota; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at Beshear Funeral Home in Dawson Springs.

The Rev. David Townsend will officiate the service for Mr. Cotton.

Burial will follow in Ilsley cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Robert Alexander, 80

William Robert Alexander, 80, of Dawson Springs, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at 2 a.m. at his home.

A graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, who worked and retired as an Electronic Engineer with the White Sands New Mexico Missile Base, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A member of the Christian faith and a Kentucky Colonel, he was born July 9, 1925, in Caldwell County, a son of the late Robert E. “Pid” and Melissa Frances Thomas Alexander.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemary “Betty” Alexander, on Oct. 6, 1993.

Survivors include a niece, Nancy Holeman Holmes of Aiken, S.C.; and a godson, Bobby Byrge of Versailles.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at Beshear Funeral Home in Dawson Springs.

The Rev. Randall Rogers will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Piney Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ron Gentry, Eric Holeman, Monty Cox, Nathan Cunningham, David Russell Beshear and Jon Harned.

J. Elliott Mitchell, 80

J. Elliott Mitchell, 80, of the Scottsburg Community in Caldwell County, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at 5 p.m. at his home, of a sudden apparent heart attack.

A retired carpenter and farmer, Army veteran of World War II and member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church since 1952, he was born Sept. 1, 1925, a son of the late Felix and Scotchia Kennady Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David Mitchell; and a sister, Ermine Rogers.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Bates Mitchell; and a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Murphy of Louisville.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m. at Cedar Bluff Baptist Church. The Rev. J.R. Bruce will officiate the service.

Burial will follow in Princeton Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Dale Bretz, 54

Dale Bretz, 54, of Princeton, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at 11:15 a.m. at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, following a long illness.

A retired security guard, he was born Sept. 24, 1951, in Toledo, Ohio, a son of the late George and Esther Milka Bretz.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Krause Bretz; a son, Derrick Bretz of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, John Graham of Princeton; a niece, Louiena Martin of Marion; and a nephew, Justin Graham of Princeton.

There will be no service or burial.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

William Oxley Quirey, 87

William Oxley Quirey, 87, of Williamsburg, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Patriots Colony at Williamsburg, Va.

Born Dec. 16, 1918, in Princeton, a son of William and Mabel Claire Hopewell Quirey, he was commissioned in 1940 a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served in World War II and two tours of duty in Vietnam after attending the University of Kentucky. He attended and served three years on the faculty of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and later attended the National War College. In 1970, he retired from the Army as a Brigadier General. He earned master’s degrees from George Washington University and the University of South Florida and taught high school social studies at St. Petersburg, Fla., after retiring from the military.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Virginia; a son and daughter-in-law, William O. Quirey Jr. and Bethany J. Geldmaker of Richmond, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Marguerite H. Quirey and Gregory E. Kennedy of Warrensburg, Mich.; four grandchildren, Alexander, Clayton and Taylor Kennedy and Gaelyn Quirey; and a sister, Sarah Kathryne Breed of Gainesville, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 20, at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Arlington National cemetery with interment to follow.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Williamsburg Regional Public Library, Director of Development, 7770 Croaker Rd., Williamsburg, Va. 23188-7004; or to the Patriots Colony Fund, 6000 Patriot’s Colony Dr., Williamsburg, Va. 23188.

Arrangements for Mr. Quirey are by Bucktrout of Williamsburg, Va., Funeral Home.

Mrs. Clover “Corky” Crouch, 83

Mrs. Clover “Corky” Crouch, 83, formerly of Princeton, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at River’s Bend Retirement Center in Kuttawa, following a long illness.

A retired nurse and member of Calvary Baptist Church, she was born Oct. 23, 1922, in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Albert and Ilene Mitchell Hagan.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Virgil Swinney; and her second husband, Charles Crouch.

Survivors include a son, David Crouch of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Allison Crouch of Bloomington, Ill.; a sister, Alberta Sterrett of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five cousins, Jimmy Dale Gilkey, Luther Gilkey, Marion Cavanah, all of Caldwell County, Betty Scott of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Glenda Mallory of Thomasville, N.C.; a niece, Nancy Everhardt; and special friend, Jeri Patterson of Princeton.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

The Rev. Rodney Wallace will officiate the service for Mrs. Crouch.

Burial will follow in Cedar Hill cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Katherine Carter Wooten, 92

Mrs. Katherine Carter Wooten, 92, formerly of Princeton, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Brookwood Nursing Home in Cincinnati, Ohio, following a short illness.

A retired adult education teacher in Florida, before returning to Princeton to enjoy her retirement, she was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late T.H. and Mertie Nichols Carter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harvey Wooten.

Survivors include two sons, J. Thomas Wooten of Franklin, N.C., and William “Bill” Wooten Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at Cedar Hill cemetery in Princeton with the Rev. Ronnie Fox officiating.

Visitation will be Monday from 10 a.m. until the service time at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

Aubrey Wayne Towery, 63

Aubrey Wayne Towery, 63, of Princeton, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 10:55 a.m. at Hilltop Nursing Home in Kuttawa, following a short illness.

A grocery meatcutter and member of Creswell Baptist Church, he was born May 10, 1942, in Crittenden County, a son of the late Clinton Aubrey and Eltalene Turley Towery.

Survivors include a brother, Larry Towery of Princeton; a sister, Carolyn Salyers of Princeton; and a nephew, Jason Salyers of Princeton.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at Morgan’s Funeral Home in Princeton.

Bro. Mike Franklin officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Bobby Jackson Sr.

Burial followed in Rowland cemetery.
