Charles Ammerman, Falmouth farmer

Charles "Buddy" Ammerman's meticulous farming methods and talent for growing healthy, hardy crops won him respect, admiration - and a good price at the marketplace.

"To be a farmer, you have to know how to manage, time everything right, be an economist and a good planner," said his sister, Lillian Hart of Falmouth.

"Buddy was a very talented farmer. He excelled in the production of his crops, and he was respected for that."

Mr. Ammerman, 66, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. The Falmouth man had lung cancer.

He grew up on a farm near Falmouth with four brothers and two sisters and learned the art of farming from his father. He excelled in the production of tobacco, grain and hay, Ms. Hart said.

"We grew up on farm; we always had a dairy, then they raised crops, and with that many boys they could do a lot of work," she said.

Mr. Ammerman was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and when he returned he married Genevieve Faye Snodgrass.

The couple had three children. When they were still young, he worked as a tenant farmer, growing crops on rented land. Eventually, he was able to buy about 150 acres of his own on Broadford Road near Falmouth.

"He lived within five miles of his birthplace his entire life," Ms. Hart said.

Mr. Ammerman was an active member of his rural community, serving as a Pendleton County election commissioner in the 1970s and as a member of the Hardin Browning American Legion Post No. 109 in Falmouth. He also was a deacon at the Falmouth Baptist Church.

"He had a quiet faith," Ms. Hart said.

In addition to his wife and Ms. Hart, he also leaves a son, David Allen Ammerman of Titusville, Fla.; daughters, Debbie Whaley and Carol Carr, both of Falmouth; sister, Kathryn Moore of Lexington; brothers, Tommy Ammerman and Bobby Ammerman, both of Falmouth, and Terry Ammerman of Lexington; and five grandchildren.
