Charles "Charlie Boy" Cox
The man who loved working with wood and turned a four-man business into an industry which now employees 743 people has died.
Charles "Charlie Boy" Cox, 76, of Landon Lane in Campbellsville, died Monday at 6:55 p.m. of an inoperable brain tumor, according to his long-time bookkeeper Lillian Lawhorn.
"I couldn't begin to tell you what a fine gentleman he was," Lawhorn said. "I can't think of anyone who has done any more for the people of this community than he has."
Cox and his wife were significant contributors to both the Hiestand House Museum and the Atkinson-Griffin House Museum, said Betty Jane Gorin, a historian.
"His community spirit was so commendable. I feel we've lost a really strong community leader," Gorin continued.
Trim from Cox Interior has been donated to numerous churches and other civic and community projects over the years, according to Lanny Cox, a salesman who started work with Cox when Cox Interior began in 1983.
"He was a man who wouldn't ask you to do anything that he wouldn't do," Druin said. "He's done a heck of a job. He brought a whole lot to the wood industry."
According to Druin and Richard Kearnes, another long-time employee, Cox accidentally met a man from Eugene, Ore. who helped him turn his vision into an industry. Cox picked Hugh Phelps' brain about how to start a trim business from scratch. Phelps trained Druin, Kearnes and Bradley Taylor in the use of equipment and as they say - the rest is history.
Cox saw a plentiful supply of poplar and started using the wood, at first shipped in from West Virginia, to make the trim and molding. Much of the poplar used today, since Cox Interior has its own kiln, comes from local sources.
In the early days, Cox and his employees would make do with equipment they could find, according to Kearnes. The business grew and so did the scope of Cox Interior.
"You always had a lot of respect for Mr. Cox," said Druin. "He knew what hard work was about and he expected that from his employees."
Cox retired in 1993 and turned the business over to his children. Cox Interior continues to be a cornerstone of the woodworking business.
Cox Interior is the fifth largest buyer of wood in the United States.
The nickname "Charlie Boy" stuck for life after a neighbor, Charlie Malone, called him that when he was a little boy.
He was the son of the late Otha Lee Cox and Toncie McDonald Cox and was born Oct. 28, 1925 in Taylor County.
He was a member of Campbellsville Christian Church.
He was also a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade with the 410th Engineer Construction Battalion.
He and George A. Cox founded Cox Weather-Stripping, which later became Mannsville Sash & Door and Cox Cabinet Co.
He married
Helen Bohanon Dec. 16, 1944.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and one daughter: Barry Cox and his wife, Lucy, Lanny Cox and his wife, Joyce, Kay Cox Legg and her husband, Larry, all of Campbellsville, and Steve Cox, Louisville; eight grandchildren: Jennifer Taylor, Benji Cox, Aaron Cox, and Carol Simmons of Campbellsville, Grant Cox, Landon Cox and Lanai Cox of Louisville and Leigh Ann Simmons of Cincinnati; five great-grandchildren: Morgan Taylor and Cayela Taylor of Campbellsville, Austin Cox of Columbia and Ashton Cox and Cody Ogden of Louisville; three sisters and four brothers: Kenneth Cox of Campbellsville, William A. Cox, Carl Cox, Evelyn Meadows, Mary Waller, Sylvia Graybeal and Cozetta Allen of Louisville; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Two brothers preceded him in death: Daniel and Wallace Cox.
Funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. The Rev. L. Carmen King and Dr. Paul W. Patton officiated.
Burial was in the Brookside cemetery with full military honors by the Marion County Veterans' Honor Guard.
Pallbearers were Brent Cox, Jerry Cox, Lester Cox, Bud Crane, Kenneth Goff, Johnnie Pennington, Walter Rhodes and Wayne Scott.
Memorial donations can be made to the Charles E. Cox Scholarship Fund at Campbellsville University.
Cox Interior established the endowed scholarship in memory of its founder. The scholarship will be available to full-time students enrolled at Campbellsville University who are either current employees of Cox Interior or children of the company's employees. Recipients will be eligible for a maximum award of $500 per semester as awarded by the university.

Christina Brown, 29
Christina Brown, 29, of Rockingham, N.C., died on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, in North Carolina.
Daughter of the late Brent Brown and Barbara Jean Walters Brown, she was born on Jan. 2, 1975 in Jefferson County, Ky.
Survivors include one son, Brent Holder of Rockingham; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kevin and Kimberly Brown of Hamlet, N.C. and Shane and Karen Brown of Rockingham; her grandfathers, Bill Walters of Campbellsville and Roy Vincent Brown of Mount Washington, Ky.; one aunt, Patty Brown of Edmonton; and two uncles, Mitchell Walters of Campbellsville and Greg Brown of Mount Washington.
She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Augusta Brown Walters and Fonda Brown; one aunt, Elizabeth "Libby" Ryan; and one uncle, Larry Brown.
Funeral was Friday, July 30 at Parrott and Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville.
The Rev. Paul J. Dicken officiated. Burial was in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Wesley Bryant, Dusty Richardson, Jeff Richardson, Ricky Sallee, Jamie Stump, Billy Walters and Brian Walters.
Roe Burdette, 80
Roe Burdette, 80, of Columbia, Ky., died on Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home.
Son of the late Samuel Monroe and Ruth Paull Burdette Sr., he was a member of Columbia Christian Church, a retired bank employee and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include one brother, Billy Burdette of Jamestown, Ky.; one sister, Martha Rou of Columbia; and one nephew, John Burdette of Jamestown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Burdette.
Funeral was Monday, July 26, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia. Dr. Phil Ellis officiated. Burial was in Columbia cemetery.
Pallbearers were Buford Smith, George Ralph Garr, Bud Burdette, Larry Dudley, Edmund Burdette and Joe Burdette.
Doris Lorene Gentry Judd, 76
Doris Lorene Gentry Judd, 76, of Green County, Ky., died on Monday, July 26, 2004, at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, Ky.
Daughter of the late Archie and Mary Susan Gentry, she was born on April 28, 1928 in Green County. She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She was married
to Owen "Chicken Little" Judd on Jan. 1, 1946. He survives.
Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda and Frank Wheatley of Buffalo, Mary Frances Thompson and Vicky and the Rev. Leslie Jewell, all of Greensburg; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Becky Judd, Donald Gene and Freda Judd, Tony and Bessie Judd, Darrell Judd and Timmy and Daphne Judd, all of Greensburg; one sister, Ruby Keith of Campbellsville; one brother, Gerthie Gentry of Greensburg; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Joe Judd; one grandchild, Jacob Allen Jewell; one great-grandchild, Aaron Jon-Luc Tucker Judd; three sisters, Maxine Judd, Frances Cook and Bessie Hedgespeth; and two brothers Buford Gentry and Verlon Gentry.
Funeral was Thursday, July 29, at Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home. The Revs. Timmy Glass, William Karnes and Leslie Jewell officiated. Burial was in Davenport cemetery.
Pallbearers were Norman Judd, Rex Cook, Junior Judd, Troy Gentry, Scott Hedgespeth and Ty Gentry.
Honorary pallbearers were Georing Judd, James Judd, Barry Bingham, Jerry Arnett, Darrell Higgason, Amos Judd, Adam Gentry, Bobby Walters, Mike Blakeman, John Hedgespeth, Steve Judd, Danny Wright and Carl Veatch.

Othel Nelson 'Double Dry' Judd, 76
Othel Nelson "Double Dry" Judd, 76, of Green County, Ky., died on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in Greensburg, Ky.
Son of the late Otis Judd and Nettie Price Judd, he was a farmer and former logger.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Junior Kessler of Cookeville, Tenn.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, William A. and Linda May Judd, Michael Ray Judd and Billy Judd, all of Greensburg; two brothers, Georing "Myrtle" Judd and Amos "Puddle" Judd, both of Greensburg; three sisters, Norene Judd and Ann Meadows, both of Greensburg, and Irene Judd of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren, Charlotte Money, Marla Jeffries, Veronica Beard and Holly Ferguson, all of Greensburg, and Turner Judd of Carthage, Tenn.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Saturday, July 31 at Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home in Greensburg.
The Rev. Garnett Wayne Davis officiated. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.

Cora Nell Kearney, 75
Cora Nell Kearney, 75, of Campbellsville, Ky., died on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon, Ky.
Daughter of the late William and Addie Lee Radford Kearney, she was born in Taylor County, Ky. on Jan. 25, 1929.
Survivors include two daughters, Jackie Emerson of Campbellsville and Margie Farmer of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Tommy Kearney and David Kearney, both of Campbellsville; three grandchildren, Crystal Smith, Brandon Farmer and Little David Kearney; two brothers, Marvin Kearney of Plano, Ill., and James Lee Kearney of Campbellsville; and two sisters, Mattie Lewis and Mary Davis, both of Campbellsville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, George Kearney, Otis Kearney, Homer Kearney, Henry Kearney and Chester Kearney; and four sisters, Mamie Kearney, Dollie Swafford, Lizzie Stubbs and Ann Kearney.
Funeral was Saturday, July 31, at Bosley Funeral Home in Lebanon. The Rev. Vic Stansbury officiated. The body was cremated.
Coy McQueary, 75
Coy McQueary, 75, of Columbia, Ky., died on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at his home after an illness.
Son of the late Joe and Evy Bryant McQueary, he was a retired factory worker in Indiana and a veteran of the Korean conflict.
Survivors include two sons, Tim True of Orleans, Ind. and Terry McQueary of Columbia, Ky.; two daughters, Pam McQueary of Indianapolis, Ind., and Tammy Luttrell of Greenwood, Ind.; one brother, Dennis McQueary of Columbia; one sister, Mable Vincent of Edinburgh, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald McQueary in 2001.
Funeral was on Wednesday, July 28 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia. Bro. Richie Curtis officiated. Interment was in Bearwallow cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charles McQueary, Danny J. Luttrell, Jason McQueary, Arthur Vincent Jr., Sean Waterman and Timothy Nathiel True.
William Chester Meadows, 78
William Chester Meadows, 78, of Adair County, Ky., died on Friday, July 30, 2004, at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville, Ky.
Son of the late Samuel Nathan Meadows and Della Mae Posey Meadows, he was born in Adair County on Aug. 1, 1925.
Meadows attended Fry Baptist Church.
He was married
to Cymbelline Rose on Jan. 22, 1944. She survives.
Survivors also include two special nieces, Belinda Lee and Veronica Judd, both of Greensburg, Ky.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Alvin Pierce of Greensburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva Darnell.
Funeral was Monday, Aug. 2 at Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home in Greensburg. Burial was in Fry cemetery.
Pallbearers were James L. Darnell, Earl Lane Judd, Larry Handy, Vernon Henderson, Maurice Wright and Calvin Puckett.
Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Gene Curry, Daryl Judd, Hulen Judd, Boyd Thomas Curry, Michael Bennett, Ricky Davis, Dennis Curry, Jared Rose and Joe Rogers.

Sarah Ruby Nobles, 90, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Adair County, Ky., died on Friday, July 23, 2004, at Vista Care-New England Club Hospice in Cincinnati.
Daughter of the late Dallas and Stella Curry Furkin, she was married
to Alvie Nobles, who preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1981.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Alvie Jr. and Betty Nobles; one daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Jean and Dale Gadberry; one sister, Delsie Hardison of Columbia, Ky.; one brother and sister-in-law, James B. and Maxine Furkin; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was Wednesday, July 28 at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia.
The Rev. Richard Lowe officiated. Burial was in Columbia cemetery.
