LSI Industries founder Don Whipple

When Don Whipple of Lakeside Park read a newspaper story a few years ago about a mother and teen-aged daughter who were about to lose their home, he took action.

Mr. Whipple wrote a letter to The Kentucky Post, offering to help. And he did more than offer. He found an apartment for them, then enlisted friends and associates to help pay for it for an extended period of time.

And he asked that his help not be made public.

His family and friends say that such actions were typical of his warmth and generosity.

Mr. Whipple, an Erie, Pa., native who came to the University of Cincinnati to play football, then went on to found a successful lighting and graphics company, died early Sunday at his home after a brief fight with cancer. He was 61.

"He did so many things for people that others didn't know about," said his son, Tim Whipple of Dayton, Ohio. Two of his daughters, Betsy A. Whipple of Chicago, and Leslie A. Whipple of Lakeside Park, in a statement, added: "His friends say, "The room lit up when Don walked in.' He made a lasting first impression on everyone he met."

Mr. Whipple came to UC on a full football scholarship and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree from the College of Business Administration.

He began a career with Pease Homebuilding Co. of Hamilton, Ohio, in 1959. By 1965 he had risen to sales manager in its EverStrait Door division. He moved to Whiteway Lighting Manu facturing Corp. of Cincinnati as general sales manager and became executive vice president.

In 1974, Mr. Whipple left Whiteway and founded Lighting Systems Inc. with partners Jim Sferra and Bob Ready. They started with eight employees. By the time Mr. Whipple retired last year, the company, now known as LSI Industries, had become one of the nation's larger lighting and graphics firms.

Mr. Whipple was an enthusi astic patron of the arts, of the University of Cincinnati and of numerous charities. With his wife, Sharon Huttes Whipple, he was a dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Covington.

His greatest joys, said family members, were his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, son and daughters Betsy and Leslie, survivors include daughter Ashley Jones, of Lakeside Park; stepmother, Florence Whipple of Erie, Pa.; sister, Donna Mae Shepard of Erie; brother, Dennis C. Whipple of Erie; and two grandchildren.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is in charge. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church Building Fund, 326 Madison Ave., Covington, 41011, or Cincinnati Arts Association, Aronoff Center, Cincinnati, 45202.
