Elwood Whobrey
(January 26, 1926 - February 17, 2012)

Elwood Whobrey, age 86, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away Friday, (February 17, 2012) at the Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center in Leitchfield, Kentucky.

He was born on January 26, 1926, in Grayson Co., Kentucky, the son of the late Willard Whobrey and Sinal Emily McGrew. He was a retired general laborer, and member of the famiily of McGrew General Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, and driving through the countryside enjoying the outdoors..

He is survived by five sons, Ray Whobrey (Cathy), Carl Eugene Whobrey (Gladys), Jason Whobrey, Roger L. Whobrey, all of Leitchfield, and Justin Whobrey (Sheila) of Hendersonville, TN; two daughters, Rose Sanders of Borden, IN, and Arlene Whobrey of Okeechobee, FL; one sister, Florene Haynes; one brother, Leo Whobrey; sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-one great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Rena Mae Whobrey.

Other than parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Smith Whobrey; one son, Edward Lee Whobrey; one grandson, Daniel Jay Whobrey; one brother, Clarence Whobrey; and two special friends, Nora Irene Hicks, and Ollie Miller.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (February 19, 2012) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Bro. Charlie Smith will be officiating. Burial will be in the McGrew cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield from 11:00 a.m. Sunday until time of service.

Cecil Beatty
(July 15, 1927 - February 19, 2012)

Cecil Beatty, age 84, of Leitchfield, KY passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the Ohio County Hospital in Hartford, KY.

He was born on July 15, 1927 in Caneyville, KY, the son of Shady and Anna Pruitt Beatty. He was a sawmill operator. He was a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by one sister, Aline Snyder of Leitchfield and several nieces and nephews. Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Irene Pettrey and four brothers, Roy, Stanley, Raymond and Russell Beatty.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Dermitt Joyce Funeral Home in Caneyville. Bro. William Dodson will be officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dermitt Joyce Funeral Home in Caneyville from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. Wednesday until time of service.

Thomas "Tommy" Fay Cox
(November 12, 1958 - February 23, 2012)

Thomas Fay “Tommy” Cox, age 53, of Clarkson, KY, passed away Thursday, (February 23, 2012) at the Norton’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was born on November 12, 1958, in Clarkson, Kentucky, the son of Richmond Fay Pearson Cox and Stella Marie Mangin Cox.

He was a deputy jailer at the Grayson County Detention Center and a security guard for Churchill Downs, and was a member of the Clarkson Baptist Church.

He is survived by his mother, Stella Marie Cox of Clarkson; two brothers, Al Cox (Jackie) of Leitchfield, and Danny Cox (Carol) of Flaherty; one sister, Hazel Marie Cox of Clarkson; and one niece, Stephanie Cox Carnes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richmond Fay Pearson Cox.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (February 25, 2012) at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield. Burial will be in the Leitchfield Memory Gardens cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of service.

Elizabeth Jennings
(June 13, 1977 - February 22, 2012)

Elizabeth Jennings, 34, of Caneyville passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY.

She was born on June 13, 1977 in Louisville, the daughter of Wendell and Charlotte Bratcher. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of Chapel Union Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband Norman Jennings of Caneyville, 4 daughters, Sara Beth, Maggie Sue, Allie Marie and Emma Kate all of Caneyville, her mother Charlotte Bratcher of Clarkson and her sister Katie Marie Bratcher of Clarkson, several uncles, aunts, cousins and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law and one nephew. She is preceded in death by her father, Wendell Bratcher.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Dermitt Joyce Funeral Home in Caneyville. Bro. Randall Deweese will be officiating. Burial will be in the Chapel Union cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dermitt Joyce Funeral Home in Caneyville after 3:00 Friday and from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until time of service.

Wanda Jean McStoots
(August 9, 1951 - February 26, 2012)

Wanda Jean King McStoots, age 60, of Leitchfield, KY, passed away Sunday, (February 26, 2012) at her residence in Leitchfield, Kentucky after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on August 9, 1951, in Edmonson Co., Kentucky, the daughter of the late William Howard and Ersley McStoots King. She was a school teacher in Grayson County. She graduated from Caneyville High School in 1969, and from Western Kentucky University in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in science. She was the only one of a large family to attend college. She loved traveling, playing cards, playing Bingo, and her dog, Star.

She is survived by three daughters, Natalie Meredith, Felicia McStoots, and Sherrie Stinnett (Jim) all of Leitchfield; eleven sisters, Loretta Stone (John), Dottie Cottrell (Herman), Natella Williams (Rick), Suzie Skaggs, Rosie Whobrey, Elaine Decker (Everett), and Rena Mae Whobrey all of Leitchfield, Joyce Richards of Summersville, Alice Grimes of Stephensburg, Evelyn Cook (Raul) of Arizona, Gerelean Smith of Missouri; and two grandsons, Jacob and Jameson Stinnett of Leitchfield.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Simon and Elbie D. King, and her companion, Charlie Smith.

Cremation was chosen. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donald E. “Donnie” Brown

Donald E. “Donnie” Brown, 72, of Lewisport, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital with his family by his side after a brief illness. Donnie was born on November 1, 1940 in Cloverport to the late Charles E. and Alberta Powers Brown. Donnie enjoyed UK basketball, where he was a season ticket holder and spending time with his family especially on Sunday afternoons. He was preceded in death by his wife Wayne Hayden Brown and a granddaughter Ashley Kreisle.

Donnie started his working career at a gas station in Cloverport; from there he went to work at American Olean in Cloverport and worked at Whirlpool. He helped start B & B Shell, B&B Automotive and B&B Ford with Phil Bozarth and later owned Brown’s Shell in Lewisport. He went to work at Hancock Bank and Trust as Vice President and manager at the Lewisport Branch, then started Brown’s CarQuest in Lewisport and was on the Board of Directors at Independence Bank.

Survivors include a daughter, René Kreisle (Joe) of Hawesville; a son, Greg Brown (Jill) of Hawesville; 5 grandchildren, Brittany Desper (Ryan), Brooke Gibson (D.A.), Lacey Mosby (Michael), Corey Brown and Dylan Brown; two great grandchildren, Kennedy Desper and Brylee Gibson; a sister, Jeanne Moad; two brothers, Bobby Brown and Randy Brown along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Central Baptist Church with burial in Lewisport cemetery. Donnie’s family will be greeting family and friends on Monday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 10:30 am. Memorial contributions may be made in Donnie’s memory to the American Cancer Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home or at their website, www.cancer.org.

Alice J. Dawson Tindle

Alice J. Dawson Tindle, 74, of Hawesville passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born on September 11, 1938 in Hancock Co. to the late Estil R. and Louise Young Dawson. Alice worked for and retired from GE of Owensboro, then returned to school and graduated nursing school. She worked for 15 years at Lincoln Hills Nursing Home. Alice was a lifetime member of Dukes Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She loved genology, volunteering at the Hancock Co. Archives. Alice loved her family vacations and her annual trip to Panama City Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by two sons, Allan and Randy Tindle; an infant daughter, Marci; two brothers, Junior Dawson and Kent Greely; a sister Brenda Simpson and a son in law Wayne Knight.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lester O. Tindle; a daughter, Donna Knight; three sons, David Owen Tindle (Jeannie), Michael Tindle and Scott Tindle all of Hawesville; siblings, Betty Cartwright of Hawesville, Billie Faye Schwartz, Cheryl Wilson, Carol Vogt, Tracy Poole all of Tell City and Jackie Moore of Tennessee; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday March 16, 2013 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home with burial in Clark-Young cemetery in Hawesville. Alice’s family will be greeting family and friends on Friday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mike Lee Potts

Mike Lee Potts, 57, of Hawesville passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at his home. He was born on September 8, 1955 in Perry Co., IN to the late Clifton and Bernice Stogsdill Potts. Mike was of the Baptist faith and a Heavy Equipment Operator. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by a sister Judy Potts Ambs.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years Mary Anna Potts; a daughter Carrie Potts Fox (Glenn Young); a son, Michael Potts (Amanda);4grandchildren, John Fox, Jennifer Fox, Justin Fox and Ivy Evans; three sisters, Gail Dawson (Glenn) Nita Potts Graham (Jay) and Dana Roach; a brother, David Potts (Billie) along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home with burial in Serenity Hills. Mike’s family will be greeting family and friends on Saturday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 7 a.m. until service time at Gibson & Son Funeral Home.

Charles William Burden

Charles William Burden, 88, of Hawesville passed away Tuesday March 5, 2013 at Heartland Villa in Lewisport. Charles was born on October 24, 1924 in Muhlenburg County to the late Shirley and Mae Johnson Burden. He was a member at Union Baptist Church, a retired union laborer and an Army Veteran. He enjoyed fishing and his little dog Lucky. He was preceded in death by a son William Reed Burden.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years Alice Reed Burden; a daughter Joyce Burden Blake (Billy) of Lewisport; a son Dallas Ray Burden of Lewisport; thirteen grandchildren Jason Burden, Belinda Burden, Scottie Blake, Le Ann Leisure (David), Crystal Jones, Brandi Blake, Regina Payne, Charlie Burden (Amy), Carmen Burden, Ashley Burden, Brandon Anderson, Cody Burden and Tyler Burden; fourteen great grandchildren and two great greatgrandchildren.

Services are at 1:00 pm Friday March 8, 2013 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Union Baptist Church cemetery. Charles’s family will be greeting family and friends from 10:00 am until service time Friday.

James Samuel “Tip” Adkins

James Samuel “Tip” Adkins, 88, of Hawesville passed away Wed., Feb. 13, 2013 at the Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was born in Patesville, KY June 12, 1924, to the late James Everett and Ethel Gabbert Adkins.

Tip graduated from Beechmont High School in the class of ’44, as president of the class. He was an active member of the Hawesville United Methodist Church, having served and chaired on several various committees through the years. He was a member of the Hawesville Lions Club for over 50 years and was one of the founding members of the Repair Affair of Hancock County. He was also a Kentucky Colonel. Tip retired from Green River Electric in 1986 as a lineman.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Aileen Lamar Adkins; his eight children, Ronnie (Brenda) Adkins, Rita (Sandy) Hendry, Debbie (Tommy) Keown and Jamie (David) Huddy of Hawesville, Donna (Allen) Chappell and Jeff (Melanie) Adkins of Lewisport, Sherry Pirkle of Atlanta, GA and Scott (Minda) Adkins of Lexington. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at Hawesville United Methodist Church with burial in Serenity Hills. Tip’s family will be greeting family and friends on Saturday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 7 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Hawesville United Methodist Church or the Hawesville Lions Club; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jason W. “Cheeks” Lindsey

Jason W. “Cheeks” Lindsey, 31, of Lewisport went to be with his Lord on February 10, 2013 at Owensboro Medical Regional Center, after a brief battle with melanoma with his family at his side. Jason was born on December 28, 1981 in Owensboro to James and Deanna Campbell Lindsey. Cheeks’ was a member at Central Baptist Church and attended Hancock Christian Church. He was a farmer, enjoyed bowling and loved spending time with family and friends. Jason was a very compassionate young man who loved helping others. Jason was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents James and Polly Lindsey and his maternal grandfather Orville Campbell, Jr. and a cousin Stephanie Winters Means.

Surviving Jason are his mother Deanna Campbell Lindsey of Lewisport; his father James “Jimmy” Lindsey of Hawesville; two sisters Jamie (Ty) Kim of Cadiz and Sabrina Kay Lindsey of Hawesville; a niece Autumn Haut of Hawesville; a nephew Connor Haut of Hawesville; his maternal grandmother Anna Campbell of Hawesville; his faithful companion, Hope and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday February 13, 2013 at Hancock Christian Church with burial in Union Baptist Church cemetery. Cheeks’ family will be greeting family and friends from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm Tuesday and from 7:00 am until 12:30 pm Wednesday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. The family has requested all memorial contributions be made to the Jason Lindsey Memorial Fund or the Ocular Melanoma Foundation; envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

Terry Glenn Adkins

Terry Glenn Adkins, 69, of Utica, formerly of Hawesville, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at his home. He was born on August 20, 1943 in Hawesville to the late Barney and Murl Newman Adkins. Terry was a member of Good Shepard Church and retired from National Southwire Aluminum. He was preceded in death by a brother, Randall Adkins.

The hand of a loving, merciful, gracious all powerful god took the hand of my beloved best friend and husband and ushered him into the glory of Heaven and the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Terry had a big heart, always wanting to help neighbors and strangers alike. Due to his failing health physically, he couldn’t but still had the desire to. He enjoyed the simple things of life and really missed coon hunting. He had so much knowledge about so many things and if he didn’t, he would figure it out. He was the one behind me that always encouraged me that I could do when I didn’t think I could. I give him credit and honor him for so very much. Terry, you are gone from my sight but forever in my heart.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Sandra Alsop Adkins; daughter, Dana Piper (Jim), a son Tracy Adkins (Rhonda) and a step daughter Lauri Hubbard ; seven grandchildren, Drew and Josh Logsdon, Crystal Hall, Brooke Elliott (Tyler), Sarah, Isaac and Lilly Adkins and one great granddaughter, Jaylee Hall along with many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Good Shepard Church (Bittel Road) in Owensboro with burial following in Union Baptist Church cemetery in Hancock County. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville and on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until noon at Good Shepard Church. Everyone is welcome back to Good Shepard Church for a Fellowship meal after services are complete. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepard Church benevolence fund, envelopes available at the funeral home.

Herbert Sinclair “Tobe” Young

Herbert Sinclair “Tobe” Young, 83, of Hawesville, passed away Saturday February 2, 2013 at Heartland Villa Care & Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 2, 1929 to the late Hal and Myrtle Board Young. He was a member of Hawesville Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Air Force serving in the Korean War.

He graduated from Beechmont High School in 1947, from Kentucky Wesleyan University with a BA Degree in 1958 and from Western Kentucky University with MA Degree in 1963. Tobe was employed by the Hancock County Board of Education where he served as a teacher, bus driver, guidance counselor and principal.

His interests included travel, genealogy, playing basketball with special friends and playing pool at the senior center. He was a member of the Hancock County Historical Society since its beginning in 1973 and volunteered many hours at the museum. He served on the Selective Service Board for a number of years and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Tobe was scorekeeper for Hornet basketball for many years, an avid Kentucky basketball fan, a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Boston/Milwaukee /Atlanta Braves baseball teams.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Gabbert and four brothers, Melvin, Emerson, Thurman and Leroy Young.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patsy Robbins Young, a son, Robin Dale Young (Helen) of Owensboro and a grandson, Christopher Andrew Young of Owensboro; two sisters, Lula Grace Young of Hawesville and Mary Edith Newton (Carlos) of Lewisport and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Hawesville Baptist Church with burial in Serenity Hills. Tobe’s family will be greeting family and friends on Monday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice.

Marlene Ross Bratcher

Marlene Ross Bratcher, 50, of Owensboro died Monday February 1, 2013 at Owensboro Medical Health System, with her family at her side. Marlene was born on February 15, 1962 in Beattyville, KY to Clint and Bethel Conley Ross. She was a caregiver and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed going to the Smokey Mountains, fishing and spending time with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother Bethel Ross and a nephew Adam Ross.

Survivors include her husband of 23 years Stephen Bratcher, her father Clint Ross of Owensboro; two sons Brian (Kim) Roberts of Owensboro and Daniel (Jalee) Roberts of Lewisport; four grandchildren Blair, Jadan, Ridge and Meadow; two brothers Drexal (Debbie) Ross and Harlan Ross; a niece Brittany Ross; two nephews Dakota Ross and Nicholas Ross and her Dachshunds Rudy and Zach.

Services are at 2:00 pm Sunday February 3, 2013 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Burial will be in Serenity Hills in Hawesville. Marlene’s family will be greeting family and friends from 10:00 am until service time Sunday.

Glen Gray

Glen Gray, 80, of Owensboro, formally of Louisville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday December 26, 2015 at Twin Rivers in Owensboro. Glen was born on October 6, 1935 in Glendean, KY to the late Sylvester and Rhoda Moorman Gray. He was a member of Talbert United Methodist Church, retired from General Electric in Louisville and was a UK basketball fan. He was preceded in death by a sister Anna Adams and two brothers Henry Gray and Raymond Gray.

Survivors include a sister Mary (Danny) Doyle and nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11:00 am Wednesday December 30, 2015 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Hawesville. Burial will be in the Owens Gray cemetery in McQuady, KY. Glen’s family will be greeting friends from 4:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday and from 7:00 am until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Eugene “Gene” Clinton Powers

Eugene “Gene” Clinton Powers, 77, of Hawesville passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at his home. He was born on March 6, 1938 in Hawesville to the late James “JC” and Ada Whitten Powers. Gene was of the Baptist Faith, retired from Commonwealth Aluminum and loved to tinker on cars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shannon Powers and a granddaughter Stefanie Kirk.

Survivors include his three daughters, Marla (Steve) Brown, LaDonna (Fiance`, Ronnie Edge) and Tina Kirk; two sons, Jeff (Cindy) Powers and Scott (Cheryl) Powers; 14 grandchildren, Brandy, Crystal, Cody, Karrie, Derek, Justin, Clint, Ashley, Micheal, Josh, Jake, Stevie, Tori and Erin; 14 great grandchildren; a sister, Vivian (Harold) Nall; a brother, Jimmy (Louise) Powers and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Hawesville with burial following in Serenity Hills. Gene’s family will be greeting friends from 4 pm until 8 pm on Saturday and from 7 am until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
