Roscoe Meece, fixed Mercedes

Roscoe Meece was a man who could do a lot of things, from repairing Mercedes automobiles in a one-man garage operation to making children happy by raising pumpkins for them to pick.

Mr. Meece, 59, of Hebron, died Friday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

He formerly owned and operated Meece's Mercedes Repair Shop in Hebron and was retired as a school bus driver with Boone County schools.

According to his wife, Rita, Mr. Meece gained his expertise with Mercedes products while working on them on the Alaskan Pipeline. He later worked for some auto repair firms in Ohio and started doing Mercedes work on the side. Soon he had so many of the latter jobs that he opened a Mercedes repair garage, his wife said.

"He had a one-stall gas station out on U.S. 42, and then a Shell Station in Crescent Springs. Finally he built a two-stall building in Hebron. He worked on Mercedes exclusively, and had all the work he could handle," said Mrs. Meece.

Ultimately, he sold the business and drove a school bus. "He absolutely loved it. He loved children," she said.

Mr. Meece also farmed, mostly as a hobby, and would raise a field of pumpkins so children could come and pick their own, his wife said.

He also drove a water truck and worked in construction, digging basements for new homes, his wife said. "We would drive past nice homes in Villa Hills, and he'd say, "See that house? I did the basement for it,' " she said.

"He was a jack of all trades who could do just anything he tried to do," said Mrs. Meece. "He also liked to help people. If someone asked for his help, he was ready to drop his hat and go help them."

Mr. Meece was a member of Hebron Lions Club and the Fair Board of Boone County. He was a member of the Antique Farm Equipment Club, Boone County, and the Boone County 4-H Council. He helped found the Boone County Farmer's Market in Burlington.
