Edward N. Albany

November 29, 1925-February 6, 2005

Edward N. Albany, 79, Glasgow, died Sunday, February 06, 2005, at his residence. A native of Barren County, he was a son of the late Geneva Smith and Edward N. Albany, Sr. He was a retired land surveyor. During WWII, he served with the United States Navy as a signalman; during which he was deployed to Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.

Ed was very active with establishing and being involved with the Glasgow Little League program. He served on the Board of Directors and coached in the program for 35 years. He was a member and former commander of Glasgow American Legion and a member and former commander of VFW Post 5906.

Survivors include his wife, Nelda; two sons, Al Albany and Eric Albany and wife, Terri, all of Glasgow; five grandchildren, Kim Delk, Willie Albany, Austin Albany, Kacy Albany and Eliza Albany; one sister, Mildred Albany of Glasgow; one niece, Judy Alexander of Glasgow; two special friends, Brianna Mosier and Bailey Alexander.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Annette Delk and one sister, Wilma Bacon.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to a favorite youth sports league program.

Goree Ellen Goff Alexander

July 23, 1914 - April 8, 2005

Goree Ellen Goff Alexander, 90, of Smiths Grove, died Friday, April, 08, 2005. A native of Barren County, she was the daughter of the late James Arlice Goff and Ettie Byrd Goff. She was a homemaker and a member of the Smiths Grove Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry Clay Alexander.

Survivors include three daughters: Reva Ann Smith of Frankfort, Ettie Lee Graven and her husband Ewing of Smiths Grove, Sarah Jean Watt and her husband Bobby of Smiths Grove. Seven grandchildren: Denise McElroy, Ellen Gotshall, Alex Smith, David Graven, LeAnn Richards, Michelle Hammock and Jeana Rose.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2005, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

William B. Atnip

February 23, 1921 - August 14, 2004

William Bryant “Buck” Atnip, 83, Glasgow, died Saturday, August 14, 2004, at the Medical Center at Bowling Green . A native of Barren County, he was a son of the late Spencer and Lula Mitchell Atnip. He was a farmer; a retired bus driver for Barren County Schools with 37 years of service; a member, deacon and former song leader of South Fork Baptist Church ; a member of Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV; and a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Lohden Atnip; two daughters, Patricia Ann Just and her husband, Paul, of Bowling Green, and Charlotte Steenbergen and her husband, Mike, of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Todd Steenbergen and his wife, Ann, and Julie Smith and her husband, Brent, all of Glasgow; Sara Just and Trey Just both of Bowling Green; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Steenbergen and Spencer Steenbergen; one niece, Sharon Lohden of Leitchfield; several cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Leonard Atnip, and one sister, Manova Lohden.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 16, 2004, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Burial, with military honors provided by Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV, will be in the South Fork Baptist Church cemetery . Friends may call after 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Vernolean Atnip

April 24, 1915 - September 1, 2002

Vernolean Gordon Atnip, 87, Glasgow, died Sunday, September 1, 2002, at the Glasgow Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the daughter of the late George Dibbrel Gordon and Ruth Ferguson Gordon and the widow of the late Vernon J. Atnip. A life-long member of the Glasgow Baptist Church, she was a beautician and operated Vernolean’s Beauty Shop for many years. She enjoyed nature and leaves behind a legacy of meticulously hand-painted china reflecting the beauty of her visions.

Survivors include one son, Eddie Atnip and his wife, Alice (Willie); two granddaughters, Kathy Atnip and Allison Atnip Chambers all of Glasgow; one brother, Carlos E. Gordon of Franklin.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 5, 2002, at the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.

Emma Christine Atnip

January 23, 1921 - August 1, 2007

Emma Christine Atnip, 86, Glasgow, died Wednesday, August 01, 2007, at Barren County Health Care Center. A daughter of the late Aaron and Hattie Williams Lohden, she was a homemaker and a retired cafeteria worker at Barren County High School. She was a member of the South Fork Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Ann Just and husband, Paul, of Bowling Green, and Charlotte Steenbergen and husband, Mike, of Glasgow; four grandchildren, Todd Steenbergen and wife, Ann, and Julie Smith and husband, Brent, all of Glasgow; Sara Just and Trey Just both of Bowling Green; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Steenbergen, Spencer Steenbergen and Emma Kate Smith; two sisters, Barbara Watson of Jeffersonville, and Wastella Hoover of Bowling Green; two brothers, Carl Lohden of Jeffersonville and Hollis Lohden of Robertsville, MO; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Atnip; three sisters, Dorothy Lohden Duke, Shirley Lohden Lowe and Janie Pearl Lohden; two brothers, J.C. Lohden and Charles Lohden.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2007, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the South Fork Baptist Church cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mildred Atherton

August 15, 1927 - May 14, 2005

Mildred Atherton, 77, Glasgow, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Barren County Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Coy and Ella Thompson McClellan, a member of the Glasgow Baptist where she was secretary and prior member of the church choir.

She is survived by five nephews: William C. Barr and David H. Barr, Jr. of Owensboro, KY., Steven R. Atherton, Dave T. Atherton and Marty Atherton all of Indiana.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Faye Atherton and one sister Lula C. Barr.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Glasgow Baptist Church.

Harold L. Arterburn

March 4, 1922 - December 8, 2003

Harold Lynn Arterburn, 81, Glasgow, died Monday, December 8, 2003, in Arlington, Texas . Born March 4, 1922, in Monroe County, he was a son of the late Virgil Evans Arterburn and Ora Lee Whitlow Arterburn. After graduation from Temple Hill High School, he worked in various positions, including J.J. Newberry, Houchens Grocery and Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore . He was an army veteran of WWII, where he served three years in the Military Police, both stateside and also in both foreign theatres in Germany, France, Marshall Island and Okinawa . He was a retired supervisor at Handmacher Fashions after 35 years of service and a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, where he had served in many capacities, including Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Trustees and served on the Pastor-Parish Committee.

Mr. Arterburn was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a charter member of the Glasgow Auxiliary Police. He had held many ranks with the auxiliary police, including chief for two years and retired after 23 years service. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Allen Lodge # 24 F. & A.M., Louisville Scottish Rite and Hart and Barren Scottish Rite.

He was a funeral director, and had been associated with the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home since 1970. He received his funeral director license in 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Marla Lynn Williams and her husband, Larry, of Arlington, TX, and Jolana Wilson Myers and her husband, Bob, of Ringold, GA; four grandchildren, Brant Williams, Hunter Williams, Brandon Burris and Ryan Burris and his wife, Treshaun; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Caleb Burris; one brother, Ferrell Arterburn and his wife, Roxie, of Glasgow; one nephew, Dan Arterburn and his wife, Alice, of Nashville, TN; two nieces, Sue Lewis and Debbie Ritter and her husband, Johnny, of Glasgow.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae Wilson Pedigo Arterburn and a sister, Nelda Arterburn.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2003 at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Poplar Log cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Allen Lodge # 24 F. & A.M. invites the public to join them for Masonic Services at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Rev. Paul Arnold

January 24, 1910 -October 31, 2005

Rev. Paul Arnold, 95, Glasgow, died Monday, October 31, 2005, at the Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a son of the late Charlie Frank and Nellviana Jane Fish Arnold. Mr. Arnold was a retired assistant manager at Glasgow National Stores and was a retired minister, having served numerous churches in Barren and surrounding counties.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Jewell Arnold; one daughter, Wanda Collins and her husband, Bob, of Vine Grove; numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2005, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Kentucky.

Larry J. Arnold

February 15, 1938 - November 9, 2008

Larry J. Arnold, died Sunday, November 09, 2008, at the age of 70. Mr. Arnold was born in Ohio, a son of the late Jack O. Arnold and Arlene Harrold Arnold. He was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960.

Mr. Arnold was the husband of Patricia Arnold of Glasgow; father of Cynthia Perkins and Larry Arnold II both of Campbellsville; brother of Jack Arnold, Alan Arnold, George Arnold, Kim Arnold and Kevin Arnold; grandfather of three. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jill Suzzette.

Services are private for the immediate family only. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Rosie Nell Armstrong

February 14, 1911 - January 4, 2006

Rosie Nell Armstrong, 94, Glasgow, died Wednesday, January 04, 2006, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A native of Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Nancy Ellen Cary Bull. An avid gardener, she was a homemaker and a member of the Scottsville Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Button and her husband, Freddie, of Glasgow; one granddaughter, Kari Button of Glasgow; one sister-in-law, Orthie Bulle of Glasgow; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Bedford Armstrong; an infant son, Willie Edsel Armstrong; two sisters, Hattie Anderson and Annie Huddleston; five brothers, Clarence, Willie, Arnie, Jim and Clay Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2006, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Margaret V. Anderson

Margaret Vance Anderson, 90, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2008. A member of First Baptist Church in Clinton, Tenn., she was born in Glasgow, the daughter of James Woodford Vance and Lucie Akers Vance.

Mrs. Anderson received her undergraduate degree from Western Kentucky Teacher’s College and earned two Master degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, one in business and one in guidance and counseling.

In 1943, she married Raymond Anderson of Madisonville. After his service in World War II, they moved to Williamsburg, where they both taught at Williamsburg High School. In 1952, they moved to Clinton, Tenn., where Mrs. Anderson taught business at Clinton High School and Mr. Anderson was the band director. During her tenure at Clinton High School, Mrs. Anderson also served as vice president and became the school’s first guidance counselor. She continued in that capacity for the duration of her career, except for a short sabbatical during which time she wrote her acclaimed account of the desegregation of Clinton High School, The Children of the South. In addition to her book, Mrs. Anderson wrote a series of articles for the New York Times Magazine and lectured extensively. In the 1960s, she also served on The President’s Council for Education.

preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raymond, as well as her three brothers, Mrs. Anderson is survived by daughters, Martha Anderson Damiano and husband Frank, and Carolyn Anderson Todd and husband Peter, all of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Grandchildren are Mollie Elizabeth Todd of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Meagan Todd Normand and husband Dave and great-grandson, Peter Blaise Normand, all stationed in Italy with the Army. Other surviving family members include first cousin Van Vance of Indiana; nieces, Gatha Chen and Susie Vance, and nephew, Johnathan Vance.

Receiving of friends will be Wednesday night, April 30, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. with funeral following at 8 p.m. at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, Tenn. Officiating will be Terry Baker and the Rev. Sam Sean.

Mrs. Anderson will be laid to rest at the Glasgow Municipal cemetery on Friday, May 2, 2008. A receiving of friends will be held at Hatcher-Saddler Funeral Home from noon until 1 p.m. on May 2, 2008, with interment following.

Memorials for Mrs. Anderson may be sent to Green McAdoo Cultural Center, 101 School street, Clinton, TN 37716; or Friends of the Clinton Public Library, 118 South Hicks Street, Clinton, TN 37716. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home of Clinton is in charge of Tennessee arrangements.

Bill Alt

August 12, 1931 - November 3, 2008

Eugene William “Bill” Alt, 77, Glasgow, died Monday, November 3, 2008, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A native of Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Ludwiz and Anna Bauer Alt. A retired 1st Sergeant with the United States Army, he was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, during which he served three tours of duty. He was a member of the DAV, VFW Post 5906, MOC of Franklin, KY, and the St. Helen Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; four step-children, Ronnie Williams and wife, Letha, and Buddy Harper and wife, Brandy, all of Glasgow, Todd Harper and Jan Hunt and her husband, Clay, all of Edmonton; two sisters, Anna Mae Dickerson of Florida and Agnes Nicholason of Illinois; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Williams Alt.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the St. Helen Catholic Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday and a service of honor by the VFW Post 5906 will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, both at the funeral home. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the VFW Post 5906 for their nursing home program.

Steve S. Alston

February 23, 1950 - June 23, 2005

Steve S. Alston, 55, Cave City, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at his residence. He retired as Sergeant First Class after having served 21 ½ years in the United States Army. He served in Vietnam and Desert Storm as well as 2 tours of duty in Germany. He was general manager of the Cave City Quality Inn at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Saundra; two sons, Rocky Alston and his wife, Lesa, of Sellersburg, IN, and Scott Alston of Louisville; one daughter, Rebecca Emerson and her husband, Joe, of Glasgow; three grandchildren, Kristyn and Kaetlyn Alston and Cheyenne Emerson; one brother, Cecil Alston and his wife, Marion, of Ahoskie, North Carolina; two nephews, Gordon and Alan Alston.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 2005, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial service will also be held in Elizabethtown at a later date. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the DAV or the VFW.

Owens E. Allen

September 27, 1914 - June 28, 2004

Owens E. “Poppie” Allen, 89, Bowling Green, formerly of Landrum Street, Glasgow, died Monday, June 28, 2004, in Bowling Green . A native of Park City, he was a son of the late Ed and Louvinia Parrish Allen. He was a retired truck driver for Walbert Trucking and a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church .

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Sublett Payne (Elmer) of Bowling Green ; one step-son, Glen Victor of Louisville ; six grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Mae Smiley Allen; one step-son, McKinley Victor; two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Glasgow with burial in the Oddfellow cemetery. Visitation will be from 11-3 and 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home and after 11:00 a.m. Friday at the church.

Ida Mae Allen

October 3, 1921 - October 31, 2002

Ida Mae Allen, 81, Glasgow, died Thursday at her residence. A native of Barren County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Jewell Smiley and Virginia McPherson Smiley Corbitt. She was a homemaker. She was a very active member of the Builders Club and a Senior Missionary of the First Baptist Church of Glasgow.

Survivors include her husband, Owen; one daughter, Kathy Payne (Elmer) of Bowling Green; one son, Glen Victor of Louisville; two sisters, Birtie Smiley and Henrietta Duncan both of Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Lawrence Smiley of Glasgow; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, McKinley Victor.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with burial in the Oddfellow cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home.
