Clarence "Modie" Ballard

July 18, 1922 - September 22, 2004

Clarence “Modie” Ballard, 82, Glasgow, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital . A native of Cumberland County, he was a son of the late Frank and Lucy Gibson Ballard. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Locust Grove Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary A. Ballard; three sons, C.B. Ballard and his wife, Billy Sue, of Glasgow, Larry Lee Ballard of Indiana, William Earl Ballard and his wife, Pauline, of Georgetown ; one daughter, Ellen K. Wood and her husband, Greg, of Glasgow; one brother, Martin Ballard of Glasgow; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2004, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Locust Grove cemetery at Knob Lick. Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

David Ballard

July 28, 1934 - November 11, 2008

David Lawrence Ballard, 74, Griderville, died Monday, November 10, 2008, at the University of Louisville Hospital. A native of Indiana, he was a son of the late William Robert Ballard, Sr. and Thelma Zachary Ballard. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict era and had worked in the insurance industry for 40 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Hiseville Lodge # 787 F. & A. M., Valley of Louisville Orient of Kentucky and the Hiseville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marietta; two sons, David Ross Ballard of Nashville and Chuck Ballard and his wife, Lisa Crabtree Ballard of Louisville; one granddaughter, Erin Nicole Ballard of Cincinnati; 2 nieces and 1 nephew of Indiana. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William R. Ballard, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted by the Hiseville Lodge 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Hiseville United Methodist Church or a favorite charity.

Samuel C. "Bill" Birge

January 28, 1928 - June 21, 2004

Samuel C. “Bill” Birge, 76, Glasgow, died Monday, June 21, 2004 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital . A native of Monroe County, he was a son of Chloe Bray Birge and the late Clyde Birge. He was a retired employee of Sorensen’s and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Kim Stites and her husband, Brandon, of Savannah, GA, and Kristal Barnes and her husband, Michael, of Hendersonville, TN; one granddaughter, Morgan Elmore; three brothers, Rondal Birge, Delbert Birge and Glen Birge all of Glasgow; one sister, Ruth Ann Woodcock of Glasgow; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph Birge, Reggie Birge and Quentin Birge.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Harold L. Bishop

September 1, 1925 - February 28, 2008

Harold L. Bishop, age 82 Glasgow, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Bowling Green Medical Center. He was a native of Louisville and a retired salesman for Moorman Feeds. Many years ago he was a Dollar General Store manager and the he worked at Junior Foods and Towne Motel in Glasgow. He was a member of the Trinity Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by his parents, Terry Drew and Anna Wallace Bishop.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Edna (Tyree) Bishop; two sons: Tony Bishop and wife Anice of Smiths Grove and John T. Bishop of Louisville; two granddaughters: Kacie Reeves and husband Josh of Scottsville and Alyssa Bishop of Smiths Grove, and three great-granddaughters: Lauren Reeves, Natalie Reeves and Abby Reeves.

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday C.S.T. at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home, 801 North Race Street at Happy Valley Road, Glasgow, KY. Burial will be in the Happy Valley Memorial Garden

Mary Alice Boles

January 30, 1912 - March 24, 2002

Mary Alice Gibbons Boles, 90, of Glasgow, died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Hershel and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Gibbons. She was a member at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Fielding Jefferson Boles.

She is survived by one daughter: Mary Roberta “Bobbie” Welch and her husband Al of Glasgow; two granddaughters: Melanie Frazier Burton of Highpoint, NC and Tara Frazier Nash of Goodlettsville, TN; three great-grand children: Clay Nash, Laura Leigh Bruton and Cameron Nash; two step grandsons: Vince Welch and Paul Welch both of Louisville

Funeral will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Joy Bale Boone

October 29, 1912 - October 1, 2002

Joy Bale Boone, poet and activist, died October 1, 2002, in Glasgow. Born October 29, 1912 to William Sydney and Edith M. Field in Chicago, IL, she married Dr. S. Garnett Bale of Elizabethtown, KY in 1934. After Dr. Bale’s death, she married George Street Boone of Elkton, KY in 1975, who survives. Joy is also survived by her six children, Shelby G. Bale of Glasgow, Barbara O. Bale of Lexington, Daryl Bale Vann and her husband, E. P. “Pat”, of Glasgow, Dr. Richard H. Bale and his wife, Gina, of Spokane, WA, Dr. Bradley F. Bale and his wife, Pam, of Spokane, and Dr. Phillip W. Bale and his wife, Kristen, of Glasgow; fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Robin Bale of Tacoma, WA.

Joy was very involved in civic activities, including the founding of the Elizabethtown League of Women Voters in the early 1940’s. She reviewed books for the Louisville Courier-Journal for more than 50 years and on WIEL radio in Elizabethtown. On the state level, she was active in mental health and medical associations, the Heart Association and the Humanities Council. A life-long advocate for education, she received an honorary doctorate in humanities from Western Kentucky University, the Sullivan Medallion from the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky School Board Association “Friend of Education” Award in 1999. She served on the UK Board of the Gaines Center for Humanities, the Thomas Clark Foundation, the Advisory Board to Western Kentucky University, the Advisory Committee of KET and the Kentucky Council on Higher Education. A literary enthusiast from childhood, she founded and edited the Kentucky Poetry Magazine “Approaches”, edited two anthologies of Kentucky Poetry, served on the Board of Friends of Kentucky Libraries, where she was a driving force for the establishment of the bookmobile system, and the editorial board of the University Press of the University of Kentucky. She was co-founder and past-chair of the Center for Robert Penn Warren Studies at Western Kentucky University. Joy was the first Kentucky Poet Laureate, 1997-1999, after the State Legislature established criteria.

Joy bequeathed her body to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Memorial services will be held 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 13, 2002, at the First Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Center for Robert Penn Warren Studies, Department of English, Western Kentucky University, 1 Big Red Way, Bowling Green, KY 42101, or the American Heart Association.

Gladys Nora Long Borders

October 19, 1910 - August 5, 2002

Gladys Nora Long Borders, 91, Morrison Park Road, Glasgow, died Monday at her residence. A native of Cumberland County, she was a farmer and the daughter of the late E. D. and Mattie Melton Carter.

She is survived by one Son: Billy K. Long and his wife Wanda of Glasgow. Four Grandchildren: Keith Long and his wife Connie, Jackie Smith and her husband Doug, Ricky Long and his wife Kellie and Eddie Long and his wife Kellie. One Brother J. C. Carter of Marion Indiana and One Sister: Opal Michuad of Marion, Indiana. Eight Great Grandchildren: Brian, Jaime, Christopher, Ashleigh, Kellen, Britney, Colby and Tanner. One Great Grandson: Mason. Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4:00 PM Tuesday.

Andrew Christian Bower

September 11, 2003

Andrew Christian Bower, infant son of Daniel and Lori Harrison Bower of Brandenburg, died Thursday, September 11, 2003, at Norton’s Hospital in Louisville.

Along with his parents, he is survived by his twin sister, Kyla Grace Bower and an older brother, Alex Cameron Bower; maternal grandparents, Mearl and Eva Harrison of Glasgow; paternal grandparents, Larry and Kathy Bower and Mary and Roy Toland all of Newton, Illinois; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 12 noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lela Belle Bowles

Lela Belle Bowles age 76 of Louisville died Saturday February 16 in Louisville. She was the daughter of the late Fred T. and Aline Hatcher Bowles. She was a retired payroll Clerk for Southern Brass in Louisville and a former payroll clerk for Handmacher in Glasgow. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Glasgow.

She is survived by a brother: David Bowles of Louisville and a sister: Sylvia Bowles of Glasgow. A nephew: Philip David Bowles of San Diego, California Two Great Nieces: Tressa Smith and Emily Bowles of San Diego One Great Nephew: Colin Bowles of Norfolk, Virginia. One Great Great Nephew: Mason Quinn Smith of San Diego.

Funeral will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler funeral home with burial in the Smith Grove cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 P.M. Tuesday.

Mary N. Bowles

July 5, 1918 - August 1, 2002

Mary Nan Bowles, 84, of Hiseville, died Thursday, August 01, 2002 at the Caverna Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of the Hiseville community, a homemaker and a member of the Hiseville Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late John Creel and Mary Moss Parrish Blaydes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Bowles and her brothers: William Marion, John Creel, Jr., Henry Lee, Clarence and David McCandless Blaydes and her sister Pearl Blaydes.

She is survived by her daughter: Nancy Leonard Bowles Christie and her husband Rollin of Hiseville. Two grandsons: Micajah Francis and Morgan Lee Christie of Hiseville. One sister-in-law: Louise Blaydes of Glasgow. She also leaves several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 2:00 P.M. Saturday.

Ruby B. Bowles

March 25, 1918 - May 13, 2003

Ruby Barber Bowles age 85 of Bowling Green, formerly of Glasgow died Tuesday at the T. J Samson Community Hospital. She is the daughter of the late John and Bertha Wood Barber. She was a homemaker and attended the Delafield Church of Christ.

She is survived by one Son: William (Billy) Houchens of Bowling Green. Three Daughters: Coleen Matthews and her husband Jim of Bordon, Indiana. Sue Houchens Stamper of Glasgow and Sandra Houchens Ross and her husband Joe of Pensacola, Florida One Niece and two Nephews also Survive.

She was preceded in death by One Daughter Sheila Houchens Williams. Two sisters and two Brothers Two Grandchildren Mark Edwards and Sherry Sloan.

Funeral Will be 11:oo AM Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Caney Fork cemetery. Friends may call after 9:30 Thursday at the Funeral Home.

Sylvia Bowles

April 18, 1931 - June 3, 2002

Sylvia Bowles, 71, Glasgow, died Monday at her residence. A daughter of the late Fred T. and Aline Hatcher Bowles, she was a retired employee of Handmacher Fashions and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Glasgow.

She is survived by a brother, David Bowles of Louisville; a nephew, Philip David Bowles of San Diego, California; two great-nieces, Tressa Smith and Emily Bowles of San Diego; one great-nephew, Colin Bowles of Norfolk, Virginia; one great-great-nephew, Mason Quinn Smith of San Diego; several cousins.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Smiths Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

John E. Boyd

February 24, 1920 - October 4, 2003

John E. Boyd, 83, of Glasgow, died Saturday, October 04, 2003 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital . He was the son of the late Jeff Boyd and Alice Imel Boyd. He was a navy veteran of WWII and star basketball player of Columbus, IN high school in 1938 and went on to play for University of Indiana.

He is survived by his wife: Sarah Eliza Gill Boyd; four children: Cheri Boyd of Glasgow, June Jackson of Glasgow, Carroll Gill of Glasgow and Max Gill of Lexington; thirteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1:00 P.M. Monday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery . Visitation will be after 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Robert Dallas "Bob" Boyd

January 9, 1930 - January 28, 2008

Robert Dallas Boyd, 78, of Glasgow, died Monday, January 28, at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson, Kentucky. He was born in Fort Myers, Florida on January 9, 1930 to the late Horace and Mary Carson Leffers Boyd. He was a long time member and Deacon of the Glasgow Baptist Church a veteran of the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, and retired from the Glasgow Independent Schools.

Survivors include his wife: Martha Sue Young Boyd; one son: Robert D. Boyd, Jr. of Glasgow; one daughter: Suanne B. Stone and her husband Kevin; five grandchildren: Sara Katherine Stone, McCartney Laine Boyd, Travis Boyd Stone, Jordan Michelle Boyd and Kory Robinson Stone; two sisters: Sarah Boyd Smith and her husband Gene of Cairo, GA and Virginia Boyd Cherry of Lee, FL.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Lloyd Boyd and a sister Helen Smith.

Funeral will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral home with burial will be in the Brookside cemetery in Campbellsville, Ky. Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. C.S.T. Thursday at the cemetery. Visitation will be after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Alternate expressions of sympathy to the Second Mile Ministry C/O Glasgow Baptist Church, 401 South Green Street, Glasgow, Ky 42141.

Sarah Eliza Gill Boyd

February 1, 1916 - March 10, 2006

Sarah Eliza Gill Boyd, 90, Glasgow, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at the NHC Health Care Center. A native of Barren County, she was a daughter of the late Jim Cam and Ann Lizzie England Jessie. She was a retired inspector at Hamilton Cosco in Columbus, IN, and had worked at Kentucky Pants Co. and Miller & Payne Dry Cleaners in Glasgow. She was a member of the Brotherhood Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Carroll Gill of Glasgow and Max Gill and his wife, Joyce of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Sarah Ashford and her husband, Russell, and Beth Goidel, and her husband, Kirby, of Lexington, Douglas Gill, Billy Jackson and wife, Vickie, Eddie Carroll Jackson and wife, Janet, Linda Stephenson and husband, Archie, and Tabitha Jackson and her friend, Timmy Glass all of Glasgow; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 7 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Edward Gill and John E. Boyd; one daughter, Eddie June Jackson and her husband, Roy Jackson; one daughter-in-law, Emily Gill; two grandsons, Larry Jackson and Donald Joe Gill; nine brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2006, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association.
