Mary E. Neal

June 10, 1927 - May 25, 2007

Mary E. Neal, 79, Glasgow, died Friday, May 25, 2007, at her residence. A daughter of the late Ed and Rosie Mae Mauk Byrd, she was a homemaker and the widow of the late Henry Thurman Neal.

Survivors include seven daughters, Linda Lou Byrd, Ruby Ennis, Janice Ennis and Rita Neal all of Metcalfe Co., Darlene Dailey of Spencer Co., Lorene Eaton and Sandra Neal of Barren Co.; four sons, Larry Neal, Billy Lee Neal and Randall Neal all of Lafayette, IN, Eddie Neal of Metcalfe Co.; one sister, Agnes Neal of Glasgow; three brothers, Tom Byrd, Joe Byrd and William Byrd all of Cave City; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2007, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Strader’s Ranch cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Christine Ford Mathis

July 9, 1910 - July 1, 2005

Christine Plumlee Ford Mathis, 94, Glasgow, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at the Glenview Health Care Center. A native of the Elbow Springs Community of Barren County, she was the daughter of the late Col. William Joseph Ford and Mary Chowning Jones Ford.

Christine was a graduate of Glasgow High School and Western Kentucky University. She was a retired teacher with 50 years of service. She taught in the Glasgow, Barren County, Shelbyville, Shelby County and Henry County Schools Systems. She became a member of the First Christian Church in Glasgow in 1921. Her membership continued until her move to Shelbyville in 1940, where she was a member of the First Christian Church until her return to Glasgow in 1983. She served in many capacities with the church, including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and CWF leader.

Christine was active in many civic organizations. She was a member of all local, state and national education associations; a member of the Kentucky Easter Seals Society; a member of the Red Cross Society; a member of the Western Kentucky University Alumni Association; was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel for her service to education by Gov. Julian Carroll; a member of the Shelby County Community Theatre; and a member of the Kentucky Historical Society. She donated four mantles to the Mary Todd Lincoln House during its restoration by Beula Nunn. She also help found the Museum of the Barrens, where she served five years as clerk in the thrift shop.

Survivors include two sons, Fred H. Mathis, Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Frankfort, and Benjamin Ford Mathis and his wife, Cynthia, of Independence, KY; four grandchildren, Kelly Ford Mathis, Elizabeth Marie Mathis Adkins, Kathryn Rose Mathis Frederick and Matthew Ford Mathis; two step-grandchildren, Mrs. Kim Harden and Doug Ellegood Mathis; six great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred H. Mathis, Sr.; two brothers, Edgar Lee Ford and Paul Howard Ford.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2005, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Hiseville cemetery. Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Christine requested that contributions be made to the First Christian Church, 1100 North Race Street, Glasgow, KY 42141.

Thomas Russell

February 1, 1931 - June 29, 2005

Thomas H. Russell, 74 of Glasgow, died suddenly at his home, Wednesday, June 29, 2005. Mr. Russell was born February 1, 1931 in Parson’s Kansas. He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon retirement, the Russell family moved to Glasgow, where they have lived for almost 20 years. Mr. Russell was a Kentucky Colonel and a pioneer family of Barren County. His ancestor was Henry Dixon for whom Dixon Cave in Mammoth Cave is named.

Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 52 years Mary Russell; two daughters: Vicki Gail Russell of Glasgow and Ruth Russell of Atascadero, California; one grandson: Jason Russell of Glasgow; one granddaughter: Margaret Ann Russell-Spaethe of Atascadero, California; one brother-in-law: James C. Harkey of Glasgow; two nephews: Daniel Russell of Illinois and James Harkey III of California and several cousins.

No services are planned Mr. Russell will be cremated. There will be an open house Saturday, July 2 at the Russell residence, 416 West Cherry Street.

Timmy Joe Martin

August 16, 1967 - September 11, 2002

Timmy Joe Martin, 35, Dripping Springs Road, Smiths Grove, died Wednesday at his residence. He was a farmer and a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his father, Bobby Martin of Smiths Grove; one brother, Ricky Martin and his wife, Patty, of Park City; one sister, Teresa Bartley and her husband, Mark, of Park City; five nieces and nephews, Tabatha, Alicia, Eric, Megan and Andi; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Martin of Park City; two uncles, Bruce Martin and Eddie Martin of Park City; four aunts, Naomi Fisher and her husband, Charles, of Glasgow, Virginia Guffey of Cave City, Linda Childress and her husband, Sam, of Cub Run, and Mary Scott of Glasgow; several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sonda Martin; paternal grandfather, Cecil Martin; maternal grandparents, Alex and Nola Guffey; two uncles, Morris Guffey and James Guffey.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Martin Family cemetery. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Russell Morgan

Russell Morgan 76 of Indianapolis, Indiana died Saturday November 3, 2001 in Indianapolis. He was the son of the late Marvin and Willie Handcock Morgan. He was a truck driver for Casters Recycling and a member of the VFW Mooresville Post.

He is survived by his wife Mary Evelyn Bertram. One Son Jimmy Lee Morgan of Columbus, Ind. and Two sisters: Vassie Ruth Wright of Park City and Mary A. Bush of Haywood. Two Grandchildren and Seven Great Grandchildren also survive.

Funeral will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with full military honors provided by the DAV Post # 20 of Glasgow. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 5 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Lula Garrett Jensen

June 10, 1923 - September 13, 2008

Lula Garrett Jensen, 85, of Glasgow, died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Henry Clay Garrett and Kate Stout Garrett. She was a seamstress and a member of the Grider Memorial Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son: Gary Jensen and his wife Gayla of Owensboro; three grandchildren: Mandy Evans and her husband Zach, Spencer Jensen and his wife Katie and Craig Jensen; three great grandchildren: Carter Evans, Seth Evans and Ella Ann Jensen; one brother: James Garrett and his wife Opal of Glasgow; one sister: Emogene Grizzle and her husband Kenneth of Glasgow.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by four brothers: Elvin Garrett, Wilmer Garrett, Ben Garrett and Samuel Garrett; two sisters: Minnie Garrett and Linnie Bruton.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral with Bro. Kenneth Grizzle officiating. Burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be after 2:30 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. . Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to T. J. Samson Hospice.

John T. Moody

April 8, 1950 - October 2, 2001

John T. Moody, 51, of Glasgow died Tuesday, October 02, 2001. He was the son of the late Rev Earl Moody and Della Logan Moody. He was preceded in death by his daughter Della Mansell Moody.

He is survived by his wife: Betty Rupe Moody; Two sons: Steven Cox and his wife Debbie of Glasgow and Marshall Cox of Glasgow; Two daughters: Pam Ballard and her husband Jason of Glasgow and Vicky Broady and her husband Clifford of Glasgow; One brother: Charles Dexter Moody of Edmonton.

Funeral will be 11:00 A. M. Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Moody family cemetery. Friends may call after 11:00 A. M. on Wednesday.

Wesley Nichols

March 19, 1907 - July 16, 2003

Wesley Nichols, 96, of Glasgow, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the NHC Healthcare in Glasgow. He was the son of the late William Jackson Nichols and Viola Hubbard Nichols. He was a member of the Salem Baptist Church in Cave City.

He is survived by one niece/daughter: Margaret Compton of Glasgow; two grandsons: Billy Compton of Elizabethtown and Terry Compton of Nashville, TN; one granddaughter: Mary Lou Hill of Nashville, TN. Three great-grandchildren: Will Compton, Margo Compton Atcher and Katie Hill. Also several nieces and nephews survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Kinney Nichols.

Funeral will be 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Salem Baptist Church. Visitation will be at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home after 5:00 P.M. Thursday, and then after 10:00 A.M. at the Salem Baptist Church on Friday. Burial will be in the Horse Cave cemetery.

Ivy M. Peabody

June 10, 1916 - November 22, 2002

Ivy Peabody, 86, formerly of Glasgow, died Thursday in Milwaukee. A native of Allen County, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Fannie Husken Slone. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Glasgow, where she was also a member of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class. She shared a very active interest with her late husband, Horace Peabody, in antiques and clocks.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane Peabody of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Kay Peabody Schmaus and her husband, Don, of Winter Park, Florida; one son, Don Garner of Greenwood, IN; seven grandchildren, Marta Carstedt and her husband, Mark, Jodie White and her husband, Dr. Cully White, and Jaede Schrank all of Wisconsin, Paul Schmaus and his wife, Yong, of Dallas, Steve Schmaus and his wife, Ginger, of Winter Springs, FL, Ricky and Ronnie Garner of Indianapolis; seven great-grandchildren; eight half-brothers, Wendell, Fred and Howard Slone of Indianapolis; Charles, Bill, Sam and Bobby Slone of Portland, TN. and Ray Dean Slone of Bonita Springs, Florida; two half-sisters, Velma Choat and Ruthie Poole of Portland, TN; several nieces and nephews, including Joe Dean and his wife, Effie, of Glasgow, and Jim Slone of Westmoreland, TN.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Viola Dean; a brother, Tilmon Slone, her stepmother, Mae Slone, a half-brother, Warner Slone and a half-sister, Estelle Slone, and a sister-in-law, Maxine Slone.

Memorial services will be held 7:00 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. Private burial will be in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church, Kosair Charities or to Alzheimer's Research, Sigma Kappa Foundation, 8733 Founders Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

Vada Norville

Vada Norville, daughter of the late John Jefferson and Vinnie Leal Milligan, died Friday, July 2, 2004, at her home in Glasgow . She was a native of Trenton, TN, but had lived in Glasgow since 1947 with her late husband, Weldon Norville. Upon Weldon’s death in 1999, they had been happily married for 56 years.

In addition to being a wife and mother, Vada was also a successful business woman. She had been a Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics for 28 years, during which time she attained the National Court of Sales for 11 consecutive years and achieved Queen in the National Court of Sales in 1981. Vada also earned 12 career cars and led her unit (Vada’s Angels) to National recognition. Vada was also a member of the Altrusa Club and an active member of the Callie Beals Circle and the Golden Rule Sunday School Class of First Christian Church in Glasgow .

She leaves many beautiful memories to be cherished by her one daughter, Patty Webster and her husband, George, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two sons, Michael Norville of Louisville and Jeff Norville and his wife, Amy, of Marianna, FL; six grandchildren, Bryon Webster, Eric Webster, Shawn Webster, Kohl Norville, Matthew Norville and Ashley Norville; one sister, Martha McKelvy of Martin, TN; one brother, Marvin Milligan of Trenton, TN.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2004, at the First Christian Church. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2004, at the Norville cemetery in Alamo, TN. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Monday until time for services at the Ronk Funeral Home in Alamo . Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the First Christian Church or the Norville cemetery Fund of Alamo, TN, c/o Marvin Norville, 120 Kail Lane, Bells, TN 38006.

Edgar Reece

June 13, 1919 - March 6, 2008

Edgar Reece, 88, of Big Meadow, died Thursday, March 06, 2008 at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. He was the son of the late James William Reece and Martha Ellen Ferguson Reece, a veteran of WWII and a member of the Wisdom Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Dorine Reece, one son: Donnie Reece and his wife Kathy of Big Meadow; one daughter: Sheila Pruitt and her husband Mike of Big Meadow; two step daughters: Diana Daniel and her husband David of MO., Gayle Morrison and her husband Johnny of Hiseville; ten grandchildren: Kim Reece, Scotty Reece, Ryan Jessie, Dr. Benjamin Jessie, Daniel Morrison, Dana Trent, Amber Jones, Ginger Earnest, Shawn Daniel and Michelle Williams; thirteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Juanita Pedigo Reece.

Funeral will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with Bro. Randall Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Big Meadow cemetery with Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV providing military honors. Visitation will be after 3:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
