Bliss Tyree

1911 - 2001

Bliss Tyree, 88, of Mt. Herman died Monday, April 30, at the Glasgow Health and Rehab Center in Glasgow. She was born in Gamaliel, KY to the late Titus McDonald and Lucrettia Deckard McDonald. She was a member of the Tompkinsville Church of Christ.

She is survived by her nephew; Don Lawson of Louisville. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Tyree and her Sister Jewell Lawson.

Funeral will be 11:00 A. M. Thursday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 5:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Larry Vance

1949 - 2006

Lawrence (Larry) Allan Vance, 57, died suddenly at his home in Gaithersburg, MD. Larry was born in Louisville, KY, graduated from high school in Frankfort and MIT in Cambridge, MA, with a double degree in Math and Political Science. He also attended George Washington University Law School. He was employed as a computer program systems analyst with A.R. Grace, Fannie Mae and Virginia Utilities. He was a member of Beechland Baptist Church in Louisville.

Larry is survived by his parents, Lawrence L. and Lela Vance of Glasgow; an aunt, Margie Friend of Glasgow; two uncles, Doug Ross of Louisville and Kenneth Vance of Evansville, IN; special friends, Scott and Karen Hamilton and their children of Hagerstown, MD.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Walnut Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Larry C. Smith

Larry C. Smith, age 61 of Glasgow died Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green. He was the son of the late Carsie Smith and Rosie Rich Smith. He was retired from the Barren County Board of Education.

He is survived by three sons: Ricky Dewayne Smith of TN, Jimmy Carroll Smith of Glasgow and Larry Michael Smith of Glasgow; four grandchildren: Justin Michael Smith, Brandon LeeWayne Smith, James Zackrey Smith and Cecily Michelle Smith; three sisters: Joyce Carolyn Wright of Bowling Green, Patricia Ann Miller of Bowling Green and Marjorie Strode of FL; Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2:00 P. M. Wednesday at the Hatcher and Saddler Funeral with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 2:30 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Lenora Parker Sabens

January 02, 1923 - June 29, 2004

Lenora Parker Sabens, 81, Glasgow , died Tuesday, June 29, 2004 , at the Glasgow Health and Rehab Center . A daughter of the late S.B. Johnson and Rose Bailey Johnson, she was a retired sales clerk at Richardson Hardware, where she was employed for 40 years. She was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church .

Survivors include four sisters, Wilma Dillingham and husband, Ray, Louise Turner, Eva Spencer and husband, Bernice, all of Glasgow, Evelyn Keys of Louisville; three brothers, James E. Johnson and wife, Florine, of Glasgow, Albert Johnson and wife, Mary Lou, of Bowling Green, and Eugene Johnson of Huntsville, TX; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Henry Parker and Paul Sabens.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2004, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

John David Smith

October 21, 1922 - August 15, 2007

John David Smith, 84, longtime resident of Barren County, died Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore. A native of Barren County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Ray and Grace Word Smith. A lifelong fisherman and sportsman, John David spent the majority of his working years as a building contractor. He served with the U. S. Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. He was a member of the Temple Hill Baptist Church and the Allen Lodge # 24 F. & A. M.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Nell Smith, Northpoint Nursing Home, Lexington; two daughters, Betty Gunnels of Nicholasville, KY, and Peggy Williams and husband, Neal, of White House, TN; one step-daughter, Sandra Wilson and husband, Doug, of Lexington; grandchildren, Chuck and Kim Gunnels of Lawrenceburg, KY, Melissa and John Stephanski of Bowling Green, Angela and John Black of Nicholasville, and Tiffany Williams of Bowling Green; great-grandchildren, Joseph and Kayla Gunnels, Morgan, Jacob and Jordan Black, Chandler, Cadan and Bradan Stephanski; three sisters, Marie Jenkins of Indianapolis, Mary Ann (B.S.) Bunch and Joyce (Junior) Coulter all of Glasgow; two brothers, Robert (Etta Mae) Smith of Indianapolis, Lennie (Dicie) Smith of Minier, IL; three sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Smith of Indianapolis, Idelle Poynter of Glasgow and Dorene Thomas of Louisville; two brothers-in-law, J. T. (Nan) Light and D. L. (Janette) Light all of Glasgow; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Thomas Smith; son-in-law, Laydell Gunnels; two sisters, Margaret Helen Smith and Ruth Compton; one brother, George Basil Smith; three brothers-in-law, William Thomas, James Thomas and Tommy Poynter; and one step-daughter, Rachel Moore.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home. Burial with military honors provided by Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV will be in the White cemetery in Monroe County. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The public is invited to masonic services at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association.

Jerry Shaw

December 29, 1965 - December 2, 2006

Thomas Gerald “Jerry” Shaw, 40, Bowling Green, died Saturday, December 2, 2006, from a 22 month battle with ALS at his residence. A native of Medford, Oregon, he lived most of his life in southern Florida. He attended the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he played as a running back on the 1984 SEC Championship Gator football team. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Business College of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and then worked in marketing for Jack Nicholas at Golden Bear. He married Park City native, Pamela Waldrop, daughter of Bill and Suzanne Waldrop. After their marriage, he worked as a business partner to Pam in their Mary Kay business, where he did, among other things, web design and maintenance, newsletter publication, event production and finance. They moved to Bowling Green in 1994 after the birth of their son. He was a member of the Living Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Waldrop Shaw; one son, Thomas Gregory Shaw; his father and step-mother, Tom and Nancy Shaw; his mother, Joy Olson; grandmother, Velda Dickey; four brothers, Chris Shaw, Will Olson, Randy Shaw and Casey Shaw.

Life Celebration services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2006, at the Living Hope Baptist Church in Bowling Green with burial in the Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and after 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Kentucky , Living Hope Baptist Church or Jerman Foundation.

Maxwell S Simpson

December 25, 1929 - March 31, 2005

Maxwell S Simpson, 75, Glasgow, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A native of Cumberland County, he was a son of the late D. B. and Dora Garner Simpson.

Mr. Simpson was a graduate of Florida Southern University, where he received both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degree and served as President of the local chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society. He was a bacteriologist at the Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab of the Florida Department of Agriculture. He was also owner of Scottie Drive-In in Glasgow; a member of the Florida Academy of Science and an active member and deacon of the Glasgow Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Adolfina Vasseur Simpson; two daughters, Lydia Simmons Crenshaw of Nashville, and Sylvia S. Gill and her husband, Tyler, of Allensville, KY; two grandchildren, Kurt A. Simmons of Goodlettsville, TN, and Emilie T. Gill of Allensville; one great-granddaughter, Kurstin Abbigayle Simmons; one brother, Gene Simpson of Glasgow; two sisters, Earleen Scott and her husband, Eddie C., and Norma McKinney and her husband, Paul, of Glasgow; three sisters-in-law, Lou Ann Simpson, Ida Belle Simpson and Mary Rose Simpson; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Willard, Ernest, Robert and Maurice Simpson.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 2, 2005, at the Glasgow Baptist Church with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home and after 12 noon Saturday at the church.

Alternate expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the Glasgow Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.

Bessie Jewell Pardue Saltsman

September 2, 1922 - September 18, 2002

Bessie Jewell Pardue Saltsman, 80, Knob Lick, died Wednesday, September 18, 2002, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Born September 2, 1922, she was a daughter of the late William Ellis Pardue and Melissa Dodson Pardue. She was a homemaker and a member of the Big Meadow Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Roy of Metcalfe County Nursing Home in Edmonton; nine sons, Oliver, Randell and Ronnie and his wife, Sheila, all of Glasgow, Roger of Hodgenville, Wallace of Knob Lick, Larry and his wife, Robin, Keith and his wife, Tammy, all of Edmonton, Daryl of Taylorsville, Indiana and Murrell of Cave City; three daughters, Shirley Jean Shirley and her husband, Junior, of Glasgow, Lisa Garmon and her husband, Tommy, of Knob Lick, and Marlene Harper of Glasgow; one sister, Nina Pierce of Hope, Indiana; thirty-one grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Big Meadow cemetery. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Marjorie Edwards Smith

July 10, 1936 - February 15, 2002

Marjorie Edwards Smith, 65, Martin Road, Horse Cave, died Friday at Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green. A native of Metcalfe County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Guy and Mamie McQuaid Edwards. She was a retired Manufacturing Engineer for General Motors and a member of the Trinity Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Donald; three sons, Lonnie Smith and his wife, Cathy of Glasgow, Kelly Smith and his wife, Joyce of Horse Cave and Steve Smith of Nashville; two daughters, Marcella McCurry and her husband, Dennis of Dallas, TX and Tonya Ellis and her husband, Jack of Bay City, TX; twelve grandchildren, Jamie Rich Smith, Christopher “Chris” Smith, Jeremy Smith, Aaron Smith, Kesley Smith, Jason Smith, Jessica Smith, Chelsea Smith, Mindy Smith, Isaac Smith, Amanda “Mandy” Cosby and Brentley Pursley; one great-grandchild, Caleb Rich; two sisters, Janice Norris of Smiths Grove and Evelyn Poynter of Knob Lick; one brother, Cecil Edwards of Hiseville; two special friends, Herberta Smith of Nashville and Sheila Brown of Columbia, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Homer Glen Edwards.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Jeffries cemetery. Friends may call after 5:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Brenda F. White Thomas

November 18, 1950 - March 21, 2008

In Gods Hands

Brenda F. White Thomas, 58, of Greensburg died Friday, March 21, 2008 in Jamestown, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late James Alfred White and Gladys Nunn White.

She is survived by her daughter: Tonya Pedigo and her son-in-law Shawn Pedigo of Bowling Green; her loving grandchildren: Asia Woodard, Aaliyah Woodward and Whitney Rahn Cianci; her loved one, Dick Thomas of Glasgow; her niece Rose Mary Morgan of Glasgow; five brothers: Nub White of Illinois, Gordon White of Illinois, Porter White of Louisville, Danny White of Hardyville and Chunk White of Hardyville; two sisters: Judy Blakeman of Greensburg and Marilyn Morgan of Hardyville; twenty two nieces and five nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother Carlos White and two sisters Ida Lois White and Rose Morgan.

Funeral will be 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Happy Valley Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be after 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary Susan Saltsman

April 4, 1921 - November 15, 2001

Mary Susan “Boots” Saltsman, 80, Glasgow, died Thursday at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A daughter of the late Joe and James Minnie Garner Coomer, she was a homemaker, a member of the Big Meadow Baptist Church and the widow of the late Coy Lee Saltsman.

Survivors include five children, James William Saltsman of Glasgow, Janice Carol Pierce and her husband, James of Glasgow, C.L. Saltsman and his wife, Judy of Hope, Indiana, Alice Jane Piper and her husband, Gilbert of Knob Lick, and Connie Thomas and her husband, Danny of Glasgow; 10 grandchildren, Sheila Saltsman, Cindy Caffrey, Rhonda Norris, Sherry Shepherd, Rocky and Kevin Pierce, Tony Piper, Angela Thomerson, MaDonna Spurgeon and Melissa Polley; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Nancy Lee Smith

December 9, 1958 - December 19, 2007

Nancy Lee Smith, 49, Glasgow, died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at the T. J. Samson Community Hospital. A daughter of the late Lounell Ballard and Clifton B. Smith, she was a former lab technician at T. J. Samson Hospital and a member of the Faith Assembly of God.

Survivors include one son, Matt Arms (Wendy Bruton) of Columbia, MO; two daughters, Sarah Arms and Amanda Burnette both of Bowling Green; three grandchildren, Brittany Burnette, Zackary Burnette and Shawn Burnette; one sister, Patricia Fay Smith of Glasgow; two nephews, Chris Gentry and Daniel Gentry; special friend, Bobby Dillard; several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Kay Smith.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2007, at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home with burial in the Glasgow Municipal cemetery. Friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Flavois Twyman

October 3, 1920 - March 4, 2007

Flavois Isaiah Twyman, 86, Glasgow, died Friday, May 4, 2007, at NHC Healthcare Center. A native of Barren County, he was a son of the late Will and Mary Elizabeth Yates Twyman. He was a retired employee of Kentucky Highway Department, an army veteran of WWII and a member of the Pleasant Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include two step-sons, Ross Forrest and wife, Ruth, of Oakland, and James Jr. Forrest and wife, Jo Ann, of Tompkinsville; four nieces, Ella Richardson of Louisville, Beatrice Smiley of Indianapolis, and Mossie Neal and Minnie Helm of Louisville; two nephews, Donnie Richardson and Gary Richardson of Louisville; two great-nephews, Donald Ray Smiley and Cecil Smiley; two great-nieces, Charlie Mae Smiley Fishback and Sue Smiley Mills; six step-grandchildren, Linda Britt, Ricky Forrest, Christy Forrest, Eric Forrest, Greg Forrest and Curtis Junior Wilson; 9 step-great-grandchildren; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Jones Twyman; seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2007, at the Pleasant Union Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home and after 1:00 p.m. Monday at the church.
