Orvel 'Gene' Griffin
10 July 2001

DEMOTTE, Ind. -- Orvel "Gene" Griffin, 63, of DeMotte died there Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Oak Grove Christian Retirement Village from natural causes. The Ripley, Tenn., native was a laborer for 30 years at Interlake Steel in Riverdale, Ill., attended Ripley schools and was an Army veteran.

Survivors include a son, David Griffin of California; a daughter, Debbie Kirk of DeMotte; three grandchildren; four brothers, J.B. Griffin of Ripley, John Griffin of Schneider, Ind., Bill Griffin of Owensboro and Ray Griffin of Sharon Grove; and four sisters, Faye Ervin of Selmer, Tenn., Linda Crowder of Ripley and Carolyn Daniels and Kathy Hester, both of Owensboro.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson Funeral Service in DeMotte. Interment will be in Skyline cemetery in Monee, Ill. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association.

Frances O'Shea Petty
(May 17, 1925 - October 20, 2011)

Frances O'Shea Petty,86, of Bowling Green, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Warren county native was born May 17, 1925 to the late Walter R. O'Shea and Myrtle Rogers O'Shea. Mrs. Petty was preceded in death by her husband Jessie W. Petty, a daughter, Mary Sue Petty Curtis, grandson, David Ross Grimes, and great granddaughters Breanna Alexis and Brylee Jordan Witty. Mrs. Petty was a seamstress and retired from Fruit of The Loom. She attended St. Joseph Elementary School and Bowling Green High School and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2011 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Petty is survived by two sons; Malcolm (Georgette) Petty, Patrick (Bonny) Petty, two daughters; Norma (Gerald) Jenkins, and Rose Grimes Stinson all of Bowling Green. Six grandchildren; Denise Smith, Jimmy (Cassandra) Petty, Missy (Scott) Witty, Mary Grace Petty, Joseph Petty all of Bowling Green and Michael (Elizabeth) Petty of Lexington. Six great-grandchildren; Tyler Smith of Lexington, Kentucky, David Smith, Ashlynn Petty, Jackson Petty, Brenna Witty, and Skyla Witty all of Bowling Green. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund.

Johnnie C. Orange

MORGANTOWN -- Johnnie C. Orange, 94, of Morgantown died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Lakeview Health Care Center in Bowling Green. The Butler County native was a homemaker and member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Orange.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Orange of Morgantown and Lanny Orange of Florida; a daughter, Joann Forgy of Louisville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Stephens of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Jones Funeral Chapel in Morgantown. Burial will be in Quality Baptist Church cemetery in Butler County.

Lorraine M. James
17 July 2001

TELL CITY, Ind. -- Lorraine M. James, 80, of Tell City died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Ind. The Chicago native worked at Douglas Aircraft during World War II, was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed crafts, displaying butterflies and writing poetry. She was known as the "Cookie Lady" and enjoyed baking, sharing her homemade cookies and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Robert W. James Sr.; four sons, Robert W. James Jr. of Yorkville, Ill., Patrick M. James of Salem, Ind., and Dennis J. James and Paul E. James, both of Tell City; three daughters, Mary Ellen Richards and Deborah Ann Maus, both of Chicago Heights, Ill., and Susan C. Toppel of Highland, Ind.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Frank Hauber of Chicago; and a sister, Evelyn Klein of Burbank, Ill.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tell City, Ind. Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery in St. Croix, Ind. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Huber Funeral Home, Tell City chapel. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to St. Paul Catholic Church.

Emma Mae Sayers
(November 2, 1918 - October 23, 2011)

Emma Mae Sayers, loving mother, grandmother and friend, 92, of Gallatin, TN, formerly of Bowling Green, KY, passed away October 23, 2011. She was born November 2, 1918 in Glasgow, KY. She was a member of Living Hope Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ellie Critten Huffman, her husband, Frank Sayers, her son, James Freddie Sayers and grandson, Sonny Sayers.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Greg) Foley; five grandchildren, Hunter, Colten, Christian, Hope and Seth and one great grandchild, Emma; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am, Wednesday at Living Hope Baptist Church Chapel with burial in the Henderson cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Tuesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 10:00 am - 11:00 am, Wednesday at the Living Hope Baptist Church Chapel.

Willard Othel 'Bill' Vaught
24 May 2001

CENTRAL CITY -- Willard Othel "Bill" Vaught, 78, of Central City died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Muhlenberg County native retired as a miner from Amoco, was a member of Mount Zion Presbyterian Church and a World War II Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Peach Vaught; a son, Larry Vaught of Central City; two daughters, Kaye Crowder of Louisville and Vicki McDonald of Martinez, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Mount Zion cemetery in Muhlenberg County. Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.

James Douglas 'Doug' Evans
17 July 2001

James Douglas "Doug" Evans, 76, of 1714 Bluff Ave., Owensboro, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his home. The Daviess County native was retired owner of Doug Evans Auto Sales in Philpot, a Catholic and sponsored local sports, motor sports and country music performers. He had worked at Harry Holder Ford Co., Lambert's Auto Sales and Tichenor's Auto Sales.

Survivors include a sister, Leona Powers of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Graveside services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Resurrection cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to SS. Joseph & Paul Catholic Church, 609 E. Retta E. Minton
(December 30, 1919 - October 29, 2011)

Retta E. Minton, 91, of Alvaton, KY., died at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky surrounded by her family. Retta was born December 30, 1919 in Mounds, Illinois. She was a daughter of the late William Benjamin and Sarah Frick Eaves. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Layton Wilson Minton, brothers William Lester Eaves and Lewis Eaves, and a sister Gladys Simpson. She was a member of Greenwood Baptist Church in Bowling Green, also secretary and member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Athens, Alabama, a graduate of Draughon's College, during the 1940's she was a secretary with the T.V.A. at Kentucky Dam where she met her husband Layton. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law in Alvaton, KY. for the last five years. She was loved very much and knew it she loved her family, enjoyed cooking, and will be greatly missed.

Retta is survived by 2 sons William Layton Minton and wife Lesa of Decatur, Alabama, Jack E. Minton and wife Sophie of Alvaton, KY., 3 grandchildren Will Minton, Carson Minton both of Decatur, Alabama, Leslie Meng and husband Will of Bowling Green, KY., 2 great grandchildren Joe Meng and Myra Meng both of Bowling Green, KY. She is also survived by a niece Denise Eaves Randall Vasta of Spring Hill, Florida., numerous cousins, 6 great nieces and nephews and 6 great-great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 12:00 P.M.Tuesday November 1, 2011 at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home Chapel Bowling Green, KY., with visitation from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Graveside and burial services will be held 4:00 P.M. at the East End cemetery in Cadiz, KY. Our sympathy to all families who are enduring the death of a loved one. Dorothy Underhill

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Dorothy Underhill, 89, of Fort Lauderdale died Friday, July 27, 2001, at her home. The Spencer County, Ind., native retired from Westinghouse Electric Co., was a member of Hall Street Baptist Church and enjoyed crafts and crocheting. Her husband, James Underhill, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, John Underhill of Fort Lauderdale; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James Eldon Bunch
(November 26, 1930 - November 5, 2011)

James Eldon Bunch, 80, of Bowling Green, died Saturday at The Hospice Center in Bowling Green. He was born on November 26, 1930, a son of the late Douglas and Helen Robertson Bunch and was preceded by his wife, Annie Evelyn Chaffin Bunch; one brother, Kenneth Wayne Bunch and two sisters, Lucille Yates and Mary Francis Evans. He attended Alvaton High School and retired as a Foreman from Holley Carburetor after 35+ years. He was a member of Hillvue Heights Church, a Kentucky Colonel, a hunter and fisherman and loved all animals.

He is survived by two sons, Edward Dean (Eddletrout) Bunch of Appling, Georgia and Norman Blaine (Caroline) Bunch of Bowling Green; three brothers, Billy Ray (Jeanne) Bunch of Escondido, California, Charles D. (Brenda) Bunch of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mitchell Ernest (Susan) Bunch of Bowling Green; one sister, Martha Ann Mills of Bowling Green; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be at 10:00 am Thursday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm Tuesday and again from 9:00 am - 9:00 pm Wednesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.

Phyllis Ann Cambron Burdette
17 July 2001

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Phyllis Ann Cambron Burdette, 59, of Bellevue died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. The Owensboro native was owner of Sno-Country Ford in Monroe, Wash.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Burdette; two sons, Jeff Burdette of Snohomish, Wash., and Jay Burdette of Monroe, Wash.; a daughter, Julia Bricker of Fall City, Wash.; eight grandchildren; a brother, Larry Cambron; and three sisters, Pat Ford, Kay Copeland and Paula Wedding.

Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Acacia Funeral Home in Seattle. Burial will be in Acacia Memorial Park in Seattle. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Marsha Rivkin Ovarian Cancer Research Center at Swedish Hospital, 747 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122.

Jaycle Bayne Glasscock Richards
(June 21, 1921 - November 11, 2011)

Jaycle Bayne Glasscock Richards, 90, of Bowling Green died at 12:40 a.m. Friday, November 11, 2011 at The Hospice Center of Southern Kentucky. Mrs. Richards was born June 24, 1921 to the late Elsie Mae Runner and John Wayne Glasscock. She was preceded in death by her parents, a husband Charles Miller Richards, brothers; Rhodes Glasscock, and Clark Wayne Glasscock and a sister Kathleen Glasscock. Mrs. Richards was a member of the Lost River Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was a member of the Richardsville Homemakers Club where she held various offices for the local, county, state and regional Homemakers Association. Visitation will be 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2011 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial at Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. Richards is survived by a daughter, Charlene Richards (James) Manco, of Bowling Green, Ky.; two grandchildren, Gretchen (Jordan) Eike Myers, San Angelo, Tx and Madonna Manco May of Bowling Green, Ky.; two great-grandchildren Lauren and Nathan May of Bowling Green, Ky.; two brothers; Ray (Elsie) Glasscock of Clearwater, Fla., Charles Lewis (Nancy ) Glasscock of Louisville, Ky., and a sister-in-law Helen Glasscock of Campbellsville, Ky.; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mabel R. Wiggins

BEECH GROVE -- Mabel R. Wiggins, 77, of Beech Grove died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Webster County native was a homemaker and retired from the former Charles Chip Factory in Calhoun. She graduated from Beech Grove High School in 1942 and was a member of Beech Grove Christian Church. Her husband, Alfred N. Wiggins, died May 17, 1989.

Survivors include a son, Rick Wiggins of Beech Grove; two daughters, Shelia Stewart of Beech Grove and Becky Stratton of Sebree; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert "Sonny" Riggs of Beechmont.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist cemetery in McLean County. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday and after 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Beech Grove Christian Church, Building Fund.

Laura Christine Price
(September 1, 1970 - November 18, 2011)

Laura Christine Price, 41, of Bowling Green died Friday at the Medical Center. The Indianapolis, Indiana native was a homemaker and a member of Ebenezer Church. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Claude Warren and maternal grandparents, Fred and Ellen Wiese. She is the daughter of Margaret Wiese and William "Bill" E. Warren and his wife, Nancy, who survive. Survivors include her husband, Michael Glen Price; daughter, Ashley Nicole Christine Kane; sons, Lauren Michael Kane and Ty Brooks Price; grandchildren, Myla Shae Gill and Easton Michael Kane; sisters, Lisa Ann Tschida and Linda Ellen Warren; grandmother, Zita Warren; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glen and Betty Price; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ricky and Lisa Ellis; Aunt and Uncle, Carol and Denney Barrow; niece and nephews, Stacey, Chris, Richie, Lawson, Logan, Thomas, Colbe and Corbin; special friends, Lorie Fisher and children, Sally Washer and children. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm Sunday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral home and again from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Monday at the funeral home. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm, Monday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in the Ebenezer Church cemetery.

Albert Gerald Payne

REYNOLDS STATION -- Albert Gerald Payne, 65, of Reynolds Station died Monday, July 16, 2001, at his home. The Ohio County native retired from the Marines as a first sergeant and retired from Barmet Aluminum. He was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, a Kentucky Colonel and enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and NASCAR. A son, Larry Wayne Payne, died in 1961.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Barbara Phelps Payne; three sons, Steven Payne of Owenton, Jerry Payne of Dawson Springs and Michael Payne of Owensboro; a daughter, Ann Huff of Whitesville; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Irland Payne of Reynolds Station and Charles Payne of Whitesville; and two sisters, Marjorie Payne of Owensboro and Deloris Wells of Reynolds Station.

Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville. Burial will be in Cates cemetery in Whitesville. Visitation is after 10 a.m. today and after 8 a.m. Thursday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Otha Clayton Young
(October 13, 1915 - October 12, 2011)

Otha Clayton Young, 95, of Alvaton died at 12:25 PM Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his family. He was born October 13, 1915, the son of the late James Emory Young and Leatha Oma Young. He was a native of Metcalfe County and a passionate farmer. He was also a member of the East Bowling Green Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and a dedicated witness to God's wonderful favors and blessings past, present, and future. He was an avid story teller and especially loved the Greatest Story ever told. Cremation was chosen under the direction of Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 16, at 4:00 PM at the North Bowling Green Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses located at 1035 Mt. Olivet Road, Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Otis Young, Prentice Young, and Howard Young and two sisters: Mae Parsley and Maxine Lowe.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Edna M. (Sharer) Young and three children: Bobby Young and his wife, Marcia, of Tell City, Indiana; Gary Young and his wife, Donna, of Pueblo, Colorado; and Linda (Young) Howe and her husband, John, of Alvaton. He is also survived by two caring sisters, Rhea (Young) Palmer of Bowling Green and Mildred (Young) Bryant of Smiths Grove. Survivors also include eleven grandchildren, Wesley Young of Pulaski, Virginia; Tod Young and his wife, Stacie, of Bowling Green; Tony Young and his wife, Wendy, of Clarksville, Tennessee; Joseph Young and his wife, Cheri, of Pueblo West, Colorado; Jason Young and his wife, Brandi, of Pueblo West, Colorado; Ginger Smith and her husband, Taru, of Alvaton; Cindy Beard and her husband, Jeremy, of Bowling Green; Kathy Zabel of Tell City, Indiana; Karmen Peter and her husband, Thomas, of Tell City, Indiana; Tiffany Magdaleno and her husband, Patches, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Rebekah Lang of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Survivors also include seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, family has requested donations to the Global Down's Syndrome Foundation or Hospice of Southern Kentucky.

Tom Murley

SCOTTSVILLE -- Tom Murley, 88, of Scottsville died there Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Medical Center. The Cumberland County native had worked for Detrex, was a farmer and member of Second and Maple Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Ocie B. Murley; two sons, Bobby Joe Murley of Owensboro and James Carroll Murley of Scottsville; a daughter, Brenda M. Harris of Franklin; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Goad Funeral Home in Scottsville. Burial will be in Beech Grove cemetery. Visitation is after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Barbara Ward Catlett
March 7, 2013

Mrs. Barbara Ward Catlett of Smiths Grove, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at The Medical Center in Bowling Green. The Murray, KY native was the daughter of the late John T. Ward and Willie Alice Harrison Ward. She was also preceded in death by her husband Walker "Mac" Catlett. She was an antique dealer, a graduate of Murray State University and a member of South Central Fellowship Church. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, March 11, 2013 at 1:30 P.M. at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.

She is survived by her cousins; Jo Alice Cothran of Benton, Marsha R. Tucker of Murray, Jane Bollmann of Davenport, IA, Larry Roberts of Murray, William Harrison of Royal Oak, MI and Wendy Helton of Tampa, FL.

Betty Kate (Thomas) Hybiak
September 5, 1930 - February 12, 2013

Betty Kate Thomas Hybiak, 82, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at The Madison Healthcare Center in Indianapolis, IN.

Betty was born September 5, 1930 a daughter of the late Will Roy Thomas and Ruby Evelyn Fitzpatrick Thomas. She was a graduate of Alvaton High School and Bethel Women's College in Hopkinsville, KY. Betty worked at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL, as an X Ray Technician for a number of years before she and her husband, Walter "Wally" John Hybiak, who was a Chemist, moved to Indianapolis. Wally died in 1993.

Despite living with a lifetime affliction of Cerebral Palsy, Betty showed a lot of courage by doing things that you would not expect from someone with this affliction.

She is survived by cousins on her father's side, Mary Jo Cross of Paris, KY, James Thomas of Bowling Green, William Thomas (Patricia), of Bowling Green and cousins on her mother's side, Richard Fitzpatrick (Dale) of Las Vegas, NV and Robert Fitzpatrick of Springfield, MO.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Friday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home.

Expression of Sympathy may take the form of contributions to the donors favorite charity
