Goldie Galloway, owned Goldie's Food Mart

Goldie Haley Marksberry Galloway did not get past the eighth grade, but she proved a shrewd businesswoman while running Goldie's Food Marts in Indiana and Covington.

"She did not have a formal education," said a son, R. Paul Marksberry Jr. of Covington.

"... But she had a natural head for business and people loved her," Mr. Marksberry said.

Mrs. Galloway, 66, died at 9:26 a.m. Saturday at her son's home.

She opened her first grocery store in 1967 in Dillsboro, Ind.

"It did great business," Mr. Marksberry said.

The store eventually changed hands and in 1987, she opened the Goldie's Food Mart at Greenup and 16th streets in Covington.

Mr. Marksberry said he and his mother lived in the building where the store was located. They were planning to do a major renovation before she died.

He said he will use a photo of his moth er in a new logo for Goldie's Inc.

"She was a special lady," he said.

Other survivors include sons, James T. Marksberry of Newport and Steven Galloway of La Grange; a daughter, Sharon L. Howard of Florence; a sister, Jewell Haley of Covington; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Christian Educational Services, P. O. Box 30336, Indianapolis, Ind. 46230.

Walter Bennett, 76, of Ludlow, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Hilltop Nursing and Rest Home, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.

Staddie Alice Soard Bills, 76, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Earl C. Bills; sons, Homer Earl and James Bills, both of Harrison County, and Rick Bills of Cincinnati; brothers, Zoney Soard and Oney Soard, both of Bourbon County; sisters, Loney Watkins of Bourbon County and Mary Wills of Carlisle; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oddville Cemetery, Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601-2744.

Orien Nelson Eals, 84, of Mt. Olivet, died Tuesday at Robertson County Health Care Center in Mt. Olivet. He was a retired Ladish Co. employee and a retired farmer. He was a member of Fosters Chapel United Methodist Church in Mt. Olivet, and a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include sons, William Eals and Donald Eals, both of Cynthiana; a daughter, Alice Marie Beagle of Dade City, Fla.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mt. Olivet. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fosters Chapel Cemetery, Mt. Olivet.

Mildred Hergott, 78, of Florence, died Tuesday at her home.

Alvin Asbury Hester, 66, of Mt. Olivet, died Tuesday at Columbia Hospital, Maysville. He was a retired Columbia Gas Co. employee and a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. He was a former church treasurer, a member of the University of Kentucky Fellows Club and a former member of the Mt. Olivet Lions Club. He was a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis B. Hester; a son, Phillip Jett of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mt. Olivet. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, or United Methodist Childrens Home in Versailles.

Howard A. Hoess, 89, of Edgewood, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was the retired owner of Hoess's Grocery Store, Bellevue, and a member of Calvary Tower Methodist Church in Bellevue.

Survivors include his wife, Aretta Tingle Hoess; a daughter, Juanita Keller of Falmouth; stepdaughters, Betty Ramler of California, Aretta Huesman of Ft. Thomas and Carol Baumgartner of Memphis; a son, Howard J. Hoess of Falmouth; a stepson, Jesse Miller of Independence; sisters, Olia Schickling and Amy Laura Knight, both of Cincinnati; a brother, Raymond Hoess of Louisville; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the church, 210 Poplar St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.

Charlene Doris Howe, 70, of Latonia, died at noon Monday at her home. She was a private nurse and a member of Disabled American Veterans and AMVETS. Her husband, Charles Howe, died June 10.

Survivors include a son, Roger Lee Howe of Fairborn, Ohio; a brother, Edgel Cummings of Latonia; a sister, Arlene Iseral of Covington; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Porter Huey, 81, of Lexington, formerly of Petersburg, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

He was a retired employee of Joseph E. Seagrams and Sons in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Campbell Huey; a son, H. Terry Huey of Lexington; sisters, Nancy Hodges of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Carol Lou Aylor of Clarksville, Tenn.; brothers, Duncan Huey of Hebron and Sam Huey of Okeechobee, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

Twyla Fay Puckett McElfresh, 36, of Brooksville, died at 6:46 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a batch clerk with Levi Strauss & Co., Florence.

Survivors include her husband, Marty Lee McElfresh; her parents, David Harvey and Nellie Wanda DeWalt Puckett of Covington; brothers, John Puckett, Phillip Puckett and David Puckett, all of Covington; and a sister, Cindy Kay Barnett of Covington.

Stuart E. Menninger, 79, of Newport, died at 10:05 a.m. Monday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

He was a retired clerk with Southwestern Ohio Regional Computer Center, Cincinnati. A son, Gary Menninger, died in 1972.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Straus Menninger; and a sister, Helen Griscy of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Marjorie Faye Moore, 59, of Carrollton, died at 3:33 a.m. Tuesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.

She was a homemaker and a member of Family Worship Center in Carrollton. Her husband, William Moore, died in 1995.

Survivors include sons, Greg Skirvin of Niles, Mich., Jeffery Skirvin of South Bend, Ind., Jerry Skirvin and Rodney Skirvin, both of Carrollton; daughters, Cynthia Tingle of Carrollton and Audrey Hamilton of Austin, Ind.; sisters, Thelma Readnour of Covington, Norma Reed of Hodgensville, Joyce Jones of Turners Station, Maureen Duncan of Carrollton and Barbara Brassfield of Chicago; brothers, Paul B. Ashcraft of Ghent and Charles Ashcraft of LaGrande, Ore.; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby C. Perkins; sons, Steven N. Perkins and Mark G. Perkins, both of Corinth; her mother, Lela Herald Wilson of Wheatley; brothers, Donald G. Wilson and Billy Wilson, both of Owen County; sisters, Imogene Wilson of Tennessee and Brenda K. Curtis of Owenton; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at J. E. Ratterman and Son Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial will be in Louisville Memorial Cemetery.
