Lorraine J. Hahn
26 May 2001

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Lorraine J. Hahn, 81, of Dunedin, formerly of Owensboro, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001. The Fort Morgan, Colo., native retired from Mercy Hospital in Owensboro as an occupational therapist and was a former deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Owensboro. She was a member of Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Dunedin Fine Arts Center, Gulf Coast Fine Arts Center and an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. Her husband, George Hahn, died in 1994.

Survivors include three sons, George J. Hahn of Simi Valley, Calif., Glenn R. Hahn of Elizabethtown and James B. Hahn of Canyon Lake, Calif.; two grandchildren; a sister, Claudia J. Harbour of Columbus, Ohio; a nephew; and a niece.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Dunedin. Burial will be in Owensboro at a later date.The body was donated to science. Ambassador Mortuary Service of Oldsmar, Fla., was in charge of arrangements. John Carl Van Zee
(October 29, 1945 - May 29, 2016)

John Carl Van Zee, 70, passed away May 29, 2016, at his home in Russellville, Kentucky. John was born October 29, 1945, in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Carl Edwin Van Zee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Moulder Van Zee, also his second wife, Reva Nell Hinton Van Zee.

Mr. Van Zee was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church and worked as a surveyor in Warren County for the Kentucky Highway Department. He enjoyed dancing, riding his bicycle, being outdoors, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Van Zee will be on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 11:00 am at Johnson Vaughn Phelps Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 2, 2016 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery following the service.

He is survived by his mother, Rena Doorlag Van Zee, two daughters, Kimberly Van Zee Downey (Todd) and Karen Van Zee Daniels (James); three brothers, Henry Van Zee, Richard Van Zee and Jerry Van Zee; a sister, Josephine Van Zee Orange; four grandchildren, Cameron Daniels, Kylee Daniels, Will Downey and Jackson Downey; and several nieces and nephews.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Southern Kentucky in memory of Mr. Van Zee.

Louise Huffaker Caskey
(April 13, 1919 - May 17, 2016)

Louise H. Caskey passed away on May 17, 2016 after a long and blessed life. She was born in Cooper, Kentucky on April 13, 1919 to Andrew and Marie Huffaker. The oldest of their twelve children, Louise was raised in Wayne County, Kentucky. After graduation from Monticello High School, she began teaching school and attending Western Kentucky University. She loved to tell the story of riding a horse to teach in the one room school house, Lockets Chapel. Upon completion of her degree from Western, she taught English and was librarian at Monticello High School. Her love of books and learning inspired her to move to Nashville, Tennessee where she earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science from George Peabody College. Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia employed her as their head librarian. It was while she was at Shepherd College that she met a handsome librarian from South Carolina, Jefferson Caskey, who became the love of her life. Jeff and Louise were married in Monticello, Kentucky on June 14, 1957. They have two daughters, Constance and Gretchen. After raising their girls, she returned to library work. Louise worked for the Barren River Area Development District and the Bowling Green Public Library before her retirement.

Wherever she was, Louise used her talents to serve the Lord. She loved the Scriptures and teaching adult Sunday School. Louise was tenacious and detailed in her study of the Word and was a Bible scholar in her own right. First Baptist Church of Bowling Green was dear to her. She was a member of and taught the Friendship Sunday School Class. Over the years, she served on several committees including Church History and Archives Committee.

Louise was an active member of the Bicentennial Garden Club. One of her favorite activities was flower arranging. She found great joy in this group where she served in several leadership roles.

After she turned 90, her family finally persuaded her to move to Danville, Kentucky so she could be closer to her daughter. She spent her last years as a resident of The McDowell Place; loved and adored by her family and a wonderful team of caregivers. Louise Caskey was a gracious and caring person who was constantly guiding those around her to be their best. Her energy and passion for all things good, bright, and beautiful will be greatly missed.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Saturday at the funeral home. Dr. Jackie Leroy Carwell
(December 30, 1923 - May 7, 2016)

Dr. Jackie Leroy Carwell (Jack), a native of Ohio passed away (flew his last sortie) at the age of 92 on May 07, 2016 at his home in Green Valley, Arizona. He was born on December 30, 1923. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret K. Carwell, parents Glen L. Carwell and Gladys Harges Carr and his brother Dr. Glenn Carwell.

"Jack" Carwell was a career military officer with over 32 1/2 active years of service. His service started in December 1941 when he dropped out of Male HS in Louisville, KY to join the Army Air Corps. He served with honor, distinction and passion in the 56th Fighter Group, 62nd Squadron during WWII as a fighter pilot of the stout P-47 Thunderbolt. After the war he returned to Kentucky to marry his love Margaret and complete studies at University of Kentucky and then dental school at University of Louisville. Afterwards, Jack rejoined the service, this time as a Dental Officer in the US Army. He also served a tour in Vietnam (1968).

Flying was never far from Jack...as he piloted his own aircraft until he was about 85 years young! Jack’s passion for flying was evident all his life…as anytime an aircraft flew over he would glance skyward. Dr. Carwell also volunteered his dental skills to underprivileged children at the Health Clinic in Bowling Green, KY for many years after he retired from military service. He enjoyed a long passion of traveling the world with his wife and children.

Visitation will be from 10am-12pm followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00pm (noon) on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, in Bowling Green, KY. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery.

He is survived by his daughter Ann Carwell, son Lee Carwell and his wife Janet, granddaughters Shannon Gann, Aimee DaCosta (David), Whitley Hounchell, and three great grandchildren Isaac, Matthew, and Sierra Gann, and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Elaine "Penny" Harrison
(January 13, 1924 - May 6, 2016)

Elaine “Penny” Maher Harrison, 92, died May 6, 2016, in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Mrs. Harrison was born on January 13, 1924 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late Walter and Ella Maher. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Lowell H. Harrison.

Mrs. Harrison is survived by her sister-in-law Barbara “Bobbie” Nation Jackson of Owensboro; two nieces, Nancy Nation Barnard and Laura Nation Shipp; three nephews, Allan Harvey (Vicki), Dr. Mark Harvey (Ellen), and Paul Nation (Beverly); and many great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Harrison (Penny) graduated from Stratford High School in Connecticut in 1941 and from Bates College in Maine in 1945 with a major in history. After graduation Penny taught at the Berwick Academy, and then began graduate work in history at New York University’s Washington Square College in 1946. While working at the Admissions Office of NYU she met Lowell H. Harrison, and they married on December 23, 1948 at Washington Square Methodist Church.

Penny and Lowell lived in Greenwich Village until 1951 when they moved to London on Lowell’s Fulbright Scholarship. From 1952 to 1967 they lived in Canyon, Texas, where Lowell taught at West Texas State University. Penny completed a MA degree in history at WTSU in 1958 and her thesis, “Frank Paul Sauerwein, Artist of the Southwest” became a major part of the book “The Life of Frank Paul Sauerwein”, which was published in 2002. While at WTSU Penny was active in the American Association of University Women, in the formation of a foreign film series, and in the establishment of the “Texas” outdoor drama, which is still being performed annually in Palo Duro Canyon outside of Canyon, Texas.

The Harrisons moved to Bowling Green in 1967, where Penny served as the manuscripts librarian at the Kentucky Library of Western Kentucky University until she retired in 1986. While Working at WKU, Penny earned her second MA degree in Library Science and did special archival study at the University of Wisconsin. She was active in forming the Kentucky Council on Archives and she held multiple offices in the organization, including being named Fellow of the Council in 1987. Penny also served on the early WKU Faculty Senate.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 9, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 12:00 pm to the time of service at the Funeral Home.

Flora Lamb

WALTON -- Flora Lamb, 97, of Walton died Wednesday, May 30, 2001. The Kentucky native retired from Rosedale Manor in Latonia, was a member of First Baptist Church in Covington and attended Decoursey Baptist Church for more than 40 years. Her husband, Charles Lamb, died in 1963.

Survivors include four daughters, Georgia Adams of Florence, Dorothy Robbins of Crittenden, Louetta Geraci of Las Vegas and Scioto Lipscomb of Walton; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William Kelley of Owensboro; and a sister, Evelyn Kelley of Indianapolis.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home in Latonia. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Taylor Mill. Visitation is after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Harold Dee Simpson
(December 17, 1932 - April 29, 2016)

Harold Dee Simpson, 83, of Bowling Green, KY died Friday, April 29, 2016 at The Medical Center. The Bowling Green native was a son of the late Clarence and Johnnie Talley Simpson and was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Garrity Simpson; second wife, Rachel Myers Simpson; a son, John Thomas Simpson; and a daughter, Carol Lorraine Simpson.

He was a retired employee of Holley Carburetor and attended Three Forks Church of Christ. Mr. Simpson enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming. He enjoyed hauling hay and coal.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie McIntyre Simpson; one daughter, Anna Basham (Norman); five sons, Russell Simpson (Tonya), Phillip Simpson (Sharon), Joe Simpson (Staci), Charles Simpson (Nancy), and Clarence Simpson; one step-daughter, Karen Eadens (Robert); two step-sons, Donald McIntyre and Chris McIntyre; two sisters, Katherine Yeager and Myrtle Henson; one brother, Hubert Simpson; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm Monday, May 2, 2016 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 9:00 am – 11:00 am Tuesday at the funeral home.

David Nations
(December 16, 1951 - April 27, 2016)

David Nations, 64, of Bowling Green died Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Hospice of Southern Kentucky. The Bonne Terre, Mo native was a Vietnam War Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Nations. Survivors include his wife, Celestina Nations; one son, Jesse Nations; two daughters, Arizona Nations and Kathlyn Nogalada; his mother, Mabel Lee Nations; two brothers, Richard Nations and Dennis Nations.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vivian Ann Byrd Blink
(January 30, 1943 - December 1, 2015)

Vivian Ann Byrd Blink, 72, of Bowling Green died at 7:45 pm Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Gallatin, TN. The Nashville, TN native was born January 30, 1943, a daughter of the late James Arch Byrd and Ann Ruth Trapp Byrd. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Blink. Mrs. Blink was an administrative department manager and a member of Grace Community Church. Survivors include her two sons, Jeff Steinberg (Cathy) of Kansas and Richard Mayers of Nashville, TN; a brother, James Riley Byrd of Portland, TN; a sister-in-law, Linda Byrd of Portland, TN; a niece, Ruthie Pegram (Ronnie) of Cross Plains, TN; two nephews, Phillip Byrd of Springfield, TN and Keith Byrd of Portland, TN; four grandchildren, Logan Mayers, Colton Mayers, Callieanna Mayers and Eden Steinberg; three great nieces, Alexandra, Sabrina and Elizabeth Pegram; a great nephew, Riley Byrd. Dorothy L. Allen
(March 2, 1949 - November 2, 2015)

Dorothy L. Allen, 66, of Bowling Green died Sunday, November 1, 2015 at her residence. The Bowling Green native was born March 2, 1949, a daughter of the late Gibb B. and Catherine Haley Short and was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Vinson and Pamela Short; a brother, Eugene Short and a grandchild, Nathan Coon. Mrs. Allen was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and worked for 38 years as a registered nurse at the Medical Center in Bowling Green. She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church. Survivors include her husband, William F. Allen of Bowling Green; one son, Doug Joiner (Janet Elliott) of Bowling Green; two daughters, Kris Joiner White (David Yanneris) of Cincinnati, OH and Dana Coon (Albert Coon) of Bowling Green; one brother, Hazel Short of Louisville, KY; three grandchildren, Ashley Koch (Jon Koch) of Nolensville, TN, Nicholas Coon and Catherine Joiner both of Bowling Green; two grand-dogs, Tank Coon and Dee Dee Joiner. Ralph Stephen "Steve" Lashlee
(April 19, 1954 - November 16, 2015)

Ralph Stephen “Steve” Lashlee, 61, of Bowling Green died Monday, November 16, 2015. The Bowling Green native was a son of the late D.J. Lashlee, Jr. and Laura Jean Sherry Lashlee. He was a graduate of Warren Central High School and was a retired Deputy Jailer at the Warren County Regional Jail. He was a former member of the Bowling Green/Warren County Search & Rescue Team and was a lifetime Boy Scout. He had served in adult leadership for Boy Scout Troop #555 and was a former member of Broadway United Methodist Church. He was a Historian and Story Teller, having vast knowledge of U.S. and Warren County history. Steve’s life was modeled after his friends, law enforcement, history, outdoor activities and scouting. Survivors include one son, Josh Lashlee of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Miles, Helen Jane and Evalyn Mae Lashlee all of Henderson, KY. George E. 'Jeb' Frazier

LIVERMORE -- George E. "Jeb" Frazier, 83, of Livermore died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Livermore native was a retired millwright, a member of Livermore Missionary Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Hall Frazier; a son, Wayman L. Frazier of Livermore; a daughter, Jeannine Vandiver of Island; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayman Paul Frazier of Beaver Dam; and a sister, Mary Helen Long of Livermore.

Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial will be in Richland Baptist cemetery in McLean County. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Wednesday and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Bennett Harrison Hudnall
(January 3, 1923 - November 29, 2015)

Bennett Harrison Hudnall, 92, of Surprise, AZ died Sunday, November 29, 2015. The Riverside, KY native was born to the late Mernie Milam and Benjamin Hudnall on January 3, 1923. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, Gale and Jimmie Hudnall and three sisters, Ovice Cornett, Frances Kennedy, and Marva Cook. He graduated from Richardsville High School in 1940, and after graduation he attended Aircraft School in Nashville, TN. He went to work at Lockhead Aircraft in Burbank, CA in 1941. He served in Europe during WWII in the Army Airforce as a Flight Maintenance and Turret Gunner on a B-24 for 2 ½ years. He returned to Lockhead Aircraft, where he retired after 36 years of employment.

Mr. Hudnall is survived by his wife, Nila Marie Hudnall and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Service is scheduled for 2:30 pm Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Mount Pisgah Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm Saturday at Mount Pisgah Methodist Church. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Richard Lee Resch
(March 15, 1958 - November 25, 2015)

Richard Lee Resch was ready to go home and be with his Heavenly Father. The 57 year old of Alvaton died on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at his residence. The Warren County native was born on March 15, 1958 to Martha Scott Resch and the late, Lester Resch. He is also preceded in death by a sister, Chana Resch McGinnis and his father-in-law, Ralph Jernigan. Mr. Resch was an estimator for D & R Construction. He was a lifelong Baptist. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved the U.K. Wildcats. He loved his family so much, and was a loving and generous friend.

He is survived by his wife, Annis Resch of Alvaton; two sons, Dustin Resch (Stephanie) of Lebanon, TN and Brad Resch (Amy) of Ardmore, AL; his mother, Martha Scott Resch; a sister, Lodema Lyons (Brad) of Bowling Green; his mother-in-law, Helen Jernigan of Alvaton; two grandchildren, Zoey and Aubree Resch; two step-grandchildren, Alexis and Jaxxon McConnell; a niece; and several nephews. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 27, 2015 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Friday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home. Mae Dean Weaver Lee Brooks, 91 of Bowling Green died Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Bowling Green Nursing and Rehab. The Allen County, Kentucky native was born September 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Wesley and Lilly Tinsley Weaver. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Estil Lee and Raymond Brooks and a brother, Joe Weaver. She was a retired seamstress for Fruit of the Loom, a member of First Apostolic Church and attended Seed of Faith Church. Survivors include one son, Jerry Lee (Norma); one daughter, Charolette Gale Wilson (Tim); five brothers, Boss Weaver (Nadean), Bill Weaver, Gene Weaver (Jan), Henry Weaver (Joyce), Dewey Weaver (Glenda); three sisters, Margie DeHart, Betty Grimes (W.E.) and Sue Cook; five grandchildren, Tracy Lee (Dustin), Dena Wilson, David Wilson, Rhonda Hall (Joe) and Deborah Jenkins (Craig); eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview cemetery. Julian Harold McLellan
(April 26, 1948 - November 23, 2015)

Julian Harold McLellan, 67, of Bowling Green died Monday, November 23, 2015 at his residence. The Lexington native was born April 26, 1948 to the late William H. and Wilma (McMullin) McLellan. He is also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Sidney (Butch) Thomas. Julian had a passion for the aggregate stone business and followed in his father’s footsteps opening Mississippi Stone, Inc. He continued his journey and lifelong dream of managing many quarry/mining operations, winning multiple entrance beautification and safety awards. He loved golf, hunting, antiquing, and spending time with family and his grandchildren. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Ann M. McLellan; daughter, Laura Williams (John) of Bowling Green, KY; son Paul Fratus (Suzan) of Bowling Green, KY; five grandchildren, Nathan Williams, Samuel Williams, Trevor Fratus, Izabella Fratus, Colin Fratus; Sister, Jane Thomas Smith (Billy Ray) of Bowling Green, KY; niece and nephews, Lee Thomas (Brande), Mark Thomas (Tracy), Beth Alagna (AJ); great nieces and nephews, Libby Claire Thomas, Annabelle Thomas, Sydney Thomas, William Thomas, Kane Alagna; two caregivers, Kathy Cherry and Marty Kurjak, who took such great care of Julian and the family in their time of need. Services will be held Saturday, November 28, 2015, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church with burial in Fairview cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, November 27, 2015, at First Baptist Church with additional visitation on Saturday from 10:00 am to the time of service at 11:00 am.
