CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- James E. Scott, 80, of Clarksville died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. The Sacramento native retired as owner of Scott's Inc. of Holland, Mich., and Douglas, Mich., and Cramco Inc. in Amory, Miss. He was a member of Morton Memorial Church in Clarksville and American Legion in Holland. He was a Kentucky Colonel and past exalted ruler of Jeffersonville Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Latham Scott; two sons, James F. Scott of Eugene, Ore., and Ernest R. Scott of Charlestown, Ind.; six grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Latas of Holland.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Interment will be in Scott cemetery in Sacramento. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. EDT today at Scott Funeral Home Jeffersonville, Ind., and from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tucker Memorial Chapel.

Jerry T. Bowlds

BUCK CREEK -- Jerry T. Bowlds, 58, of Buck Creek died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Daviess County native had worked at National Aluminum Corp. in Hawesville and was a Catholic. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Bowlds; five sons, James Bowlds of Livermore, Jeff Bowlds of Inman, S.C., and Eddie Bozarth, Donnie Bozarth and Tony Bozarth, all of Calhoun; a daughter, Vickie Wimsatt of Owensboro; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; his mother, Gertrude Bowlds of Owensboro; two brothers, David Bowlds of Buck Creek and Steve Bowlds of Owensboro; and three sisters, Doris Evans and Judy Curtis, both of Owensboro, and Joyce Alsup of Georgia.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Livermore. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to McLean County-American Cancer Society Relay For Life, c/o AREA Bank, attn. Sandy Baird, P.O. Box 130, Calhoun, KY 42327.

Lawrence Edward Towery

CALHOUN -- Lawrence Edward Towery, 49, of Calhoun died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at his home in Guffie. The McLean County native was a member of the Harvest Baptist Temple in Owensboro. He enjoyed fishing, playing Bingo and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Kelly Towery Poynter of Owensboro and Katherine Elizabeth Hayes of Masonville; three grandchildren; his mother, Pearlyn Towery of Calhoun; five brothers, John D. Towery, Roy W. Towery, Jack A. Towery and Terry L. Towery, all of Owensboro, and Douglas M. Towery of Utica; five sisters, Betty J. Keown of Beech Grove, Mary A. Renfrow of Panther, Carolyn S. White and Paula F. Tichenor, both of Owensboro, and Ella J. Dillingham of Calhoun; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 3 p.m. today at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Visitation is after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Lawrence Edward Towery, Memorial Fund, c/o Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel, P.O. Box 160, Calhoun, KY 42327.

Russell S. Hurd
3 October 2001

Russell S. Hurd, 87, of Grove City, Pa., formerly of Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Grove City Community Hospital. The Sabinsville, Pa., native retired as owner-operator of Hurd's Barber Shop in Owensboro in 1975 and was a former member of Crabtree Avenue Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II, received the Purple Heart and was a coal miner. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Lee Hurd, in 1975; and a daughter, Barbara Foster, on Sept., 12, 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Newcomb Hurd; a son, Russell S. Hurd Jr. of Owensboro; a daughter, Betty McLimore of Utica; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; five brothers; and three sisters.

Private graveside services are at Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. There is no visitation. James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Daniel Pitino Shelter, 501 Walnut St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

George Lester Bard
9 October 2001

GREENVILLE -- George Lester Bard, 61, of Greenville died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2001, at his home. The Depoy native retired from Air Gem Coal Mines in Carbondale, Ill. A son, Scottie Bard, died in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Maxie Louise Bard; six sons, Marcus O'Shay of Central City, Jonathan Kane Bard of Virginia Beach, Va., Aaron Devon Bard and Ulysses Tyrone Bard, both of Greenville, Jeffery Bowling of Chicago and George Lamont Bard of Louisville; seven grandchildren; a brother, Wendell Bard of Lexington; and three sisters, Castella Hawkins and Celestine Bard, both of Greenville, and Ora Lee Parker of Madisonville.

Services are at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bibbs' Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in West End cemetery near Greenville. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Marjorie Linda Gibbons
17 October 2001

BEAVER DAM -- Marjorie Linda Gibbons, 75, of Beaver Dam died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Hendersonville, N.C., native was a homemaker and member of McHenry Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Clifton Gibbons; a son, Thomas Stepp of Morgantown; three daughters, Mary Mills of Michie, Tenn., Kathie Howard of Whitesville and Tammi Johnson of Livermore; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Patti Espinoza of Gary, Ind.

Memorial services are at 5 p.m. today at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Nell Hays Mercer

CENTRAL CITY -- Nell Hays Mercer, 93, of 2112 Ford Ave., Owensboro, formerly of Central City, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at her son's home in Owensboro. The Butler County native was a housewife, a member of Owensboro Christian Church and a graduate of Western Kentucky University. Her husband, Raymond F. Mercer, died in 1994.

Survivors include two sons, Ken N. Mercer of Central City and Larry Mercer of Owensboro; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rochester (Ky.) cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Gideon International or First Christian Church in Central City.

Edward L. Stone
12 October 2001

BELTON -- Edward L. Stone, 76, of Belton died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Muhlenberg Community Hospital in Greenville. The Ohio County native was a member of Dunmor Baptist Church, was a veteran of World War II and had worked at U.S. Steel in Gary, Ind.

Survivors include his wife, Evalena Wampler Stone; a son, Randall E. Stone of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren; and a brother, Thurman Stone of Demott, Ind.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. Burial will be in Dunmor cemetery. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Joan Withers Sullivan

Joan Withers Sullivan, 69, of 1345 W. 15th St., Owensboro, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Jamestown native was a member of Owensboro Christian Church and enjoyed garage sales, flowers and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Robert G. "Bob" Sullivan; a son, Rob Sullivan of Nashville; a daughter, Sherrie Howard of Owensboro; six grandchildren; a brother, Don Withers of Flagler Beach, Fla.; and four sisters, Elizabeth Garner of Russell Springs, Virginia Grimsley of Fairfax, Va., Cotton Heisel of Dayton, Ohio, and Molly Stimson of Montgomery, Texas.

Services are at 1 p.m. Monday at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Owensboro Christian Church Building Fund, 2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Douglas Rhineburger

Vernon Douglas Rhineburger, 81, of 730 Pennbrooke Ave., Owensboro, died there Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001. He was a farmer, a Pentecostal and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Vera Dean Sapp Rhineburger; six sons, William Carroll Ezell, Jerry Rhineburger, Terry Rhineburger, Roger Rhineburger and David Rhineburger, all of Owensboro, and Larry Rhineburger of Chicago; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sarah Grego of Arizona and Dorothy Gootee of Stanley.

Services are at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Owensboro Memorial Gardens, Christ Chapel. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro.

Chester Douglas Phillips
6 October 2001

SACRAMENTO -- Chester Douglas Phillips, 77, of Sacramento died there Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at his home. The Muhlenberg County native was a member of Brier Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church and had worked as an Island Creek Security worker at Furniture Factory and the Murphy-Miller Company.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Jewell Phillips; four sons, Doug Phillips, Billie Phillips, Lockie Phillips and Danny Phillips, all of Sacramento; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Grover Phillips of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tucker Memorial Chapel in Sacramento. Burial will be in Brier Creek cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Ervin Craig
1 October 2001

James Ervin Craig, 88, of 3824 Riverside Drive, Owensboro, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. The Daviess County native was a retired farmer and member of Hall Street Baptist Church. His wife, Martine Winkler Craig, died Feb. 26, 1995.

Survivors include a brother, Felix P. Craig of Auburndale, Fla.; a sister, Hattie Mable Estes of Owensboro; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
