Frank A. Mitchell

Mr. Frank A. Mitchell, 65, of 4810 Old Lyddane Bridge Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at his residence. He was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Owensboro to the late Raymond L. and Doris Rone Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was previously employed as a professional photographer for Texas Gas Transmission Corp. for more than 18 years, and left to fulfill his lifelong dream of a farming career in 1976. He was also involved as a partner at Planters and Center Brick tobacco warehouses. He was a member of the board of directors at National City Bank and Sorgho Airport Fire Department. Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Army in the medical research unit. He was a former member of Daviess County Lion's Club and served on the board of directors of Orbit Gas Co. He was a loyal supporter of Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ann Taylor Mitchell; a special son and his wife, Lee A. and Teresa Mitchell of Owensboro; and two wonderful grandchildren, Zachary Allen Mitchell and Keeley Rone Mitchell.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Daviess County. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today at James H. Davis Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children, 10200 Linn Station Road, Suite 200, Louisville, KY 40223-9964, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 5664 Highway 56, Owensboro, KY 42301 or Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

James 'Jim' Lawrence Ivey Sr.

James "Jim" Lawrence Ivey Sr., 78, of 419 E. 22nd St., Owensboro died Friday, May 14, 2004, at his son, Tony Ivey's home. He was born May 8, 1926, to the late James Paul and Mary Dobry Ivey in Daviess County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Hayden Ivey, who died in November 1999. They were married Aug. 31, 1947.

Jim retired from the Owensboro Police Department with the rank of Lt. Colonel, Chief of Detectives in 1986, after serving 39 1/2 years with the Owensboro Police Department. He started with OPD in 1947 as a foot patrolman and graduated to cars after his wife, Millie, taught him to drive.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was honorably discharged in March 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class and was a longtime Kentucky Colonel. He also was a member of the local FOP.

He enjoyed golf, shopping and was passionate about exercising and physical fitness. He loved meeting new people, telling jokes, laughing and staying in touch with old friends. He also enjoyed watching area high school sports as long as his health permitted. Some of his happiest times were spent in the company of his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Tony and Anita Ivey and Jim and Linda Ivey Jr. of Owensboro, Mike and Linda Ivey of Utica and Pat and Joellen Ivey of Paducah; three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jeff Byrge of Sikeston, Mo., Donna and Terry Hamilton and Robin and Greg Leach of Owensboro; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; several cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be at noon Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday with prayers being said at 7 p.m. Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Dr., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Lucille Leak Mondy

Lucille Leak Mondy, 88, of Cincinnati, wife of the late Booker T. Mondy, who preceded her in death, departed to join her Lord and a host of family members and friends on Wednesday, May 12, 2004. Lucille, known as "BoBo" to her grandchildren and "Sis" to her brother, was a God-fearing woman who put all her trust in the Lord. She was born to Archie Sr. and Lucy Leak on Feb. 6, 1916, in Owensboro. She was the only girl in the family with three brothers, Archie Jr., Johnny and George.

Lucille was a member of the Fourth Street Baptist Church in Owensboro until she moved to Cincinnati. Upon her arrival, she joined Bethel Baptist Church. In 1949, Lucille was joined in holy matrimony to Booker T. Mondy. They joined Greater Liberty Baptist Church in 1951. As a member of Greater Liberty, she was active in groups such as The Bells of Liberty (Gospel Chorus), Ella Alcorn Circle (Missionaries/Women in White), William Cox Club, Golden Ages, Satisfied Seniors, Sunday school and Wednesday night prayer meeting.

BoBo/Sis leaves to celebrate her homecoming as she takes the hand of her Lord to the heavenly gates, leaving her son, Bernie W. Johnson (Dolores) of Cincinnati; her brother, George Leak (Deanna) of Owensboro; her stepdaughter, Verna Long of Seattle; and a host of relatives and friends. May the peace of the Lord by with you and all of us ... Rest in peace, BoBo/Sis.

Funeral services are Monday, May 17, 2004 at 11 a.m. EDT at Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home in Cincinnati. Visitation is after 10 a.m. Monday at Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home. Local arrangements are being handled by McFarland Funeral Home in Owensboro.

Manuel L. Ashworth

LOUISVILLE - Manuel L. Ashworth, 83, of Louisville died Friday, May 14, 2004, at Caritas Medical Center. The Pellville native was a retired carpenter and a member of Victory Memorial Baptist Church, Suburban Masonic Lodge #740, Carpenters Union Local #64 and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Ashworth; friends, Don and Debbie Chaudoln; and two sisters-in-law, Lilly Ashworth and Alice Ashworth.

Services are at noon EDT Monday at O.D. White & Sons in Louisville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Visitation is from noon until 7 p.m. Sunday and after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Victory Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund.

Raymond Darrel DeArmond

DUNMOR - Raymond Darrel DeArmond, 60, of Dunmor died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at his daughter's home in Central City. He was a truck driver for the Logan County Road Department and a member of Dunmor Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Robbie DeArmond, Randy DeArmond and Ritchie DeArmond; a daughter, Shelda (DeArmond) Odle; a brother, Billy DeArmond; and three sisters, Hazel Moore, Velma Jenkins and Patty Whittaker.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home Inc. in Lewisburg. Burial: Dunmor cemetery in Muhlenberg County. Visitation: After 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Roy Lee Bailey Sr.

GREENVILLE - Roy Lee Bailey Sr., 59, of Greenville died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at his home. He was a coal miner, a member of Belton Pentecostal Church and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Miller Bailey; a son, Roy Lee Bailey Jr.; two daughters, Evelyn Jean Brooks and Stacie Johnson; and two brothers, Glenn Bailey and Ralph Bailey.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Jernigan Chapel cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: After 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles 'Pinky' Mattingly

Charles "Pinky" Mattingly, 49, of Whitesville died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Daviess County to James E. Mattingly of Whitesville, who survives. He worked at Mattingly Plumbing, was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and enjoyed family, friends, gardening, hunting and barbecue. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma, in 1993; and a brother, Curtis, in 1980.

Survivors include three sons, Darren Mattingly and Dwayne and wife Shelly Mattingly, all of Whitesville, and Timmy Mattingly of Masonville; a daughter, Tara Mattingly of Masonville; two grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Eddie and Vickie Mattingly of Philpot and Darrell and Sheila Mattingly and Tony Mattingly, all of Whitesville; and two sisters and their husbands, Doris and Bruce Evans of Morganfield and Angie and Greg Beyke of Whitesville.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Pinky Mattingly Memorial Fund.

Caroline (Girtman) Herrell

ROCKPORT, Ind. - Caroline (Girtman) Herrell, 34, of Rockport died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Brian Scot Herrell; two sons, Jesse Ray Harmon and Phillip Anthony Peveler; a daughter, Jordan Lee Harmon; a stepson, Mason Scot Herrell; a stepdaughter, Janaye Marie Herrell; her parents, Roy Girtman and Emily Girtman; two brothers, Herbert and Ricky Girtman; and two sisters, Sherry Sterms and Julie Ann Harmon.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport. Burial: Richardson cemetery in Luce Township, Ind. Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Ellen Rector

CENTRAL CITY - Mary Ellen Rector, 63, of Central City died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her daughter's home in Madisonville. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three sons, Roy Geary Jr., Richard Allen Geary and Eddie Michael Geary; a daughter, Carol Sue O'Bannon; two brothers, Wayne Crick and J C Crick; and a sister, Virnes Crick.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Fairmount cemetery in Central City. Visitation: After 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen Jean Phipps
06/20/04

Helen Jean Phipps, 54, of Owensboro died Friday, June 18, 2004, at her home. Born May 9, 1950, Mrs. Phipps was a native of Pine Bluff, Ark. She was a machine operator and had worked at DBM and was of the Baptist faith. She loved playing bingo and cards and going to the casino, but especially enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking. She was preceded in death by a son, Ray Barnes.

She is survived by her husband, James Oliver Phipps; a daughter, Shanda Boyd of Owensboro; three stepdaughters, Jameicai Gibson of Cincinnati and Shannon Johnson and Jasamie Phipps, both of Lexington; a stepson, James Phipps of Lexington; and a brother, Jessie Lewis of Owensboro; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services are at noon Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
