James W. Wood Sr.

James W. Wood Sr., 92, formerly of Owensboro, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark, Ohio. He was born in Daviess County on Feb. 16, 1912, to the late John A. and Nanny Ruby Wood.

Mr. Wood retired from General Electric on Dec. 1, 1975, after 25 years of service. He graduated from Owensboro High School in 1930, was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of AARP and a charter member of Windridge Country Club. He was a member of Third Baptist Church, the Berean Bible Class and sang in the sanctuary choir for many years. He was preceded in death by two sisters; and his wife, Elizabeth Newton Wood in November 1989.

Survivors include two sons, James W. Wood Jr. of Newark and Gary N. Wood of Snellville, Ga.; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Friday, May 28, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Friday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Third Baptist Church, P.O. Box 808, Owensboro, KY 42303-0808.

Stephen Michael Kulka

Stephen Michael Kulka, 50, of 2403 Eastland Drive, Owensboro, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Norton's Audubon Hospital in Louisville. He was born in Daviess County and was the warehouse manager for Unilever Best Foods of North America and had been with them for 29 years. He was the son of the late Joseph Andrew and Mary Margaret Berry Kulka. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He had been on St. Pius' cooking team for more than 24 years where he enjoyed chickens and burgoo. He was a 1971 graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School, earned an associate degree from University of Kentucky and received further education at Brescia College. He enjoyed working outside and helping others. He was a member of the Class of 2000 of the Leadership Owensboro, a board member and past chairman of the Owensboro Motorsports Festival, a board member of the Citizens Health Care Advocates and was a committee member for the building and grounds of St. Pius X.

Surviving is his wife of 26 years, Sharon Schwartz Kulka; a son, Benjamin Kulka of Owensboro; a daughter, Kristen Kulka of Owensboro; two sisters, Susan Hager and her husband Eric of Washington, D.C. and Karla Cox of Owensboro; four brothers, Ned Kulka and his wife Sharon of Louisville, John Kulka and his wife Betsy of Knoxville, Tenn., Richard Kulka of Owensboro and Andy Kulka of Evansville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, at St. Pius X Catholic Church with entombment following in the Resurrection cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Prayers will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 120 Wall St., New York, NY 10005-4001 or Spina Bifida Association of Kentucky, 982 Eastern Parkway, Box 18, Louisville, KY 40217.

Beverly Puckett Bennett and Rhiannon Faith Bennett

VINE GROVE - Beverly Puckett Bennett, 36, and her expected child, Rhiannon Faith Bennett, of Vine Grove died of natural causes Monday, May 17, 2004, at home. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Alton Puckett, in May 2000; and a brother, Robert Alton Puckett II, in April 2004.

Her mother and stepfather, Jacqueline and G. Ted Smith of Owensboro; her brothers, Dr. Gregory Puckett of Vine Grove and Jay Smith of Houston; an uncle, Mike Butler of Owensboro; and two aunts, Betty Puckett of Owensboro and Joanne Cole of Salem, Ind., survive her.

A private family service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 22562, Owensboro, KY 42304 or the Epilepsy Foundation of Kentuckiana, MedCenter One, 501 East Broadway, Suite 110, Louisville, KY 40202. Glenn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Freddie Wayne Embry

BEAVER DAM - Freddie Wayne Embry, 49, of 921 Madison St., Beaver Dam, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 11 p.m. at home. He was born June 14, 1954, in Ohio County to Clemon Embry and Lillie Brooks Embry Cannon. He retired from Clay Trucking Co. as a truck driver and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his father, Clemon Embry in 1993; a sister, Linda Ann Embry in 1967; and four brothers, Eugene Embry in 1949, Roy Embry in 1969, Larry Dale Embry in 2001, and Richard Embry in 2003.

Survivors include two sons, Jason Embry of Greenville and Dale Embry of White Plains; two daughters, Melissa Dockery of Greenville and Sabrina Embry of McHenry; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Embry, Brianna Kay Dockery and Danielle Leeann Raley; two brothers, Tommy Embry of Beaver Dam and Lawrence "Tubby" Embry of Centertown; two sisters, Joyce Lou Rickard of Sacramento and Rose Hisle of Harrodsburg; and his mother, Lillie Brooks Embry Cannon of Beaver Dam.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home with Brother Rodney Albin officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Tuesday. Burial will be in Carson cemetery in Hartford with military honors.

David K. Hutchins

David K. Hutchins, 50, of 6459 Highway 231, Utica, died Monday, May 17, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. David Hutchins was born July 28, 1953, in Livermore to the late Lightening and Martha Hutchins. He was a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War, served in the Army and was a member of AMVETS Post No. 119 in Owensboro. David enjoyed everything outdoors, including fishing, hunting and ginseng root digging, but he most enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeremy Keith Hutchins, who died May 17, 1975.

Survivors include his companion, Suzanne; four sons, Todd Donahue of Elizabethtown, Michael Hutchins of Livermore, Jason Hutchins of Owensboro and Brandon Hutchins of Louisville; a daughter, Jaylene Allen of Elizabethtown, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; four brothers, Russell Hutchins of Fordsville, Wayne Hutchins and James Hutchins, both of Livermore, and Johnny Hutchins of Owensboro; three sisters, Nellie O'Bryan and Faye Payne, both of Owensboro, and Chrissy Donahue of Livermore; and a best friend, Bob Moore of Owensboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel, with Dr. Richard Sams officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Livermore with military honors conducted by the McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5415. Friends may visit with the Hutchins family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at Muster's in Livermore. The Hutchins family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to AMVETS Post No. 119. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Muster's in Livermore.

Joseph Edward Serich

LENNON, Mich. - Joseph Edward Serich, 78, of Lennon died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Genesys Health Park. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Amos Wischmeyer as celebrant. Entombment will be held at the mausoleum of New Calvary Catholic cemetery in Flint, Mich. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. A scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

Mr. Serich was born April 4, 1926, in East Brady, Pa., the son of Mirko and Mary Barbara (Bompage) Serich. He married Bertha Head on Jan. 2, 1960, in Owensboro. They have resided in Lennon since 1967. Mr. Serich retired from GM Service Parts Operations in 1991 after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Serich was a member of St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, where he served as a longtime usher. He always lived life to the fullest and enjoyed the simple things of life, especially gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Bertha; three sons, Joseph Serich Jr. and fiancée Connie Billow of Grand Blanc, Michael Serich and wife Cris of Saline and Charles Serich and wife Liz of Westland; two grandchildren, Travis and Aimee Serich of Westland; seven siblings, Josephine Kubic of Youngstown, Ohio, Mary and husband John Furka of Pennsylvania, Barbara Serich of California, Gregory Serich and wife Pat of Harrison, Bill Serich, Bob Serich, Steven Serich and wife Lois, all of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, George; and two sisters, Bertha and Kathy.

Doil Drake

BELTON - Doil Drake, 68, of 180 Odd Kid Lane, Belton, died at 9:45 a.m., Sunday, May 16, 2004, at his residence. He was born May 23, 1935, in Muhlenberg County and was a retired steel worker and a member of Forest Oak Baptist Church in Belton. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Mildred Edding Drake.

Survivors include his wife, Karen DuBois Drake of Belton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara (Jeff) Gamble of Portage, Ind., Nancy (Jim) Miller of Greenville and Diana (Mel) Weaver of Crown Point, Ind.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Argle (JoNell) Drake of Owensboro and Ronnie (Mary) Drake of Belton; four sisters, Lenora (Elmer) Link of Griffith, Ind., Ausalene (Boyce) Pendley of Belton, Sue (Jackie) Beliles of Drakesboro and Shirley (Wayne) Dukes of Beechmont; and her stepmother, Dora Drake of Belton.

Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home, 536 Bradford St., Beechmont, with the Rev. Wayne Dukes, the Rev. Brian Haire and the Rev. Gene McGehee officiating. Burial will be in Mud River cemetery in Belton. Visitation is after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Vervie R. Duke

Mr. Vervie R. Duke, 93, of 6100 Carter Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 18, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Jan. 26, 1911, to the late Cater and Magnolia Thomas Burden Duke in Butler County. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his garden. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Duke, who died in 1969; a daughter, Linda Duke, who died in 1978; and a grandson, Daniel Duke, who died in 1993.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Onie Phelps Duke of Owensboro; a son and his wife, Emmett (Paula) Duke of Owensboro; a daughter, Lee Kassinger of Owensboro; three grandchildren, Tammy Greenwell, Jeff Kassinger and Steven Duke; and five great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Owensboro Christian Church, 2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303 or Hospice Association, 723 Harvard Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Ella Irene Higgs Kendall

Ella Irene Kendall (nee Higgs), 91, a former clerk at the Evansville Airport, beloved mother of Jane Patterson; loving grandmother of Vada Kinnebrew, Byron Patterson and Carla Patterson; and dear great-grandmother of Joseph "Joey" Patterson, departed Sunday, May 16, 2004.

Visitation will be from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Pleasant Point Baptist Church in Pleasant Ridge. Interment will be in Pleasant Point Church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Renfro & Piper and Young Funeral Home of Owensboro.

Thomas Henry 'Doc' Bader

Thomas Henry "Doc" Bader, 76, of 2921 Choctaw Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Aug. 30, 1927, in Daviess County to the late Henry Goebel and Eileen (Berry) Bader. He retired from Green River Steel Corp. after 33 years of employment. He enjoyed yardwork and was one of the original mall walkers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert D. Bader, in October 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Barbara Lawson Bader; a daughter, Sherry Lambert of Owensboro; two grandsons, Lawson Lambert of Baltimore and Landon Lambert of Murphysboro, Ill.; and three sisters, Louise Ferrante of Connecticut, Bette Reynolds of Dover, Pa., and Linda Praria of Deltona, Fla.

Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Vicki Bell Edge

Vicki Bell Edge, 49, of Hammond, Ind., formerly of Owensboro, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at her home. She was born on Aug. 16, 1954, in Owensboro to the late Paul J. and Dorothy (Bartlett) Bell. She was a member of St. Casimir Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Thomas Edge; a son, Joseph Bell, at home; a brother, Joseph Bell of Owensboro; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Sonny Wilson of Lowell, Ind., Marilyn and Ronnie Epley of Owensboro and Paula and Mike Harms of Mount Carmel, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday, May 21, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Mater Dolorosa cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, where prayers will be said at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
