Harry 'Billy' Rhineberger

Harry "Billy" Rhineberger, 52, of 4004 Carpenter Drive, Owensboro died Friday, May 28, 2004, at his home. He was born in Owensboro on Sept. 15, 1951, to the late Daniel and Mary Rhineberger. He enjoyed country rides, the lottery and spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include his companion, Michelle Green of Owensboro; two sons, Daniel Rhineberger of Owensboro and Johnny Winters of Owensboro; a daughter, Becky Freeman of Terre Haute, Ind.; a sister, Judy Shelton of Owensboro; a brother, James "Red" Rhineberger of Owensboro; four grandsons, Billy Brown, Bryan Freeman Jr., Justice Freeman and Johnny Winters II; a granddaughter, Aleesa "Doodles" Winters; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 4004 Carpenter Drive, Owensboro. James H. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sherman Glynn Bailey

Sherman Glynn Bailey, 40, of 812 E. Parrish Ave., Owensboro died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at his residence. He was born Nov. 26, 1963, in Muhlenberg County and had been a self-employed carpet installer for 17 years. He was a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Bremen and enjoyed fishing and playing darts with his son.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Kristina Woosnam Bailey of Owensboro; two sons, Travis Glynn and Matthew Bailey; his mother and stepfather, Roberta and Donnie Harris of Owensboro; his father and stepmother, Sherman Ray and Pauline Bailey of Belton; a sister, Teresa Hurt of Macon, Ga.; two stepsisters, Karen Morgan of Belton and Linda Kirby of Huntsville; and several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City with the Rev. Jimmy Bunch officiating and assisted by the Rev. Albert Clardy. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery in Bremen. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City.

Martina Ann Heisdorffer
05/30/04

Martina Ann Heisdorffer was stillborn on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville to Kelly and Annette Heisdorffer of Utica.

She is also survived by a triplet brother, Isaac James and a sister, Juliann Carol Heisdorffer; paternal grandparents, Leland and Bonnie Heisdorffer of Sigourney, Iowa; and maternal grandparents, Glenn R. and Carol Meyer of Steelville, Ill.

A graveside service will be held at Owensboro Memorial Gardens on Friday, June 4, 2004, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Norton Suburban Hospital, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Memorial Fund in memory of Martina Ann Heisdorffer, 4001 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40207.

Lula C. 'Teen' Barr

Lula C. "Teen" Barr, 84, of 1205 Leitchfield Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was a member of Apollo Heights United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William C. Barr and David H. Barr Jr.; a stepdaughter, Betty Dresback; and a sister, Mildred Atherton.

Services: 3 p.m. today at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial: Elmwood cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation: From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: A favorite charity.

Richard Leslie Coomes

Richard Leslie Coomes, 74, of 7650 State Route 81, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at his home. He was born May 8, 1930, in Daviess County and retired from the City of Owensboro Fire Department in 1977 and owned and operated R. Coomes & Sons Roofing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War serving from 1947 to 1953 and a member of St. Martin Catholic Church. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed raising goats and planting trees. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward A. and Trecia Mount Coomes; a son, Scott Anthony Coomes in 1979; three brothers, Leonard, Harold and Lawrence Coomes; and a sister, Rosalee Bell.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Coomes; four sons, Richard Coomes II and wife Rebecca of Owensboro, Michael Coomes and wife Patricia of Owensboro, Patrick Coomes of Stockton, Calif., and Russell Coomes and wife Laura of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Melody Alford and husband John of Nashville and Joy Coomes of Nashville; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Charlie Coomes of Merkel, Texas; and three sisters, Dorothy Fogle of Owensboro, Mary Edna Waisenon of Dayton, Ohio, and Gertrude Hartshon of Kettering, Ohio.

Services are at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Martin Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Mills officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Lillian M. Barks
05/30/04

CENTERTOWN - Lillian M. Barks, 90, of Centertown died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Beaver Dam Health Care Manor. She was born April 10, 1914, in Boma, Tenn., to the late William Dalton and Marinda Jane (Stewart) Martin. She was a retired seamstress from Sunshine Cleaners, a retired postmaster at Boma and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy J. and Franza Stewart of Plymouth, Mich., and Glenn and Rita Stewart of Centertown; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Cora Grabowski of Cookeville, Tenn.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the Chapel of Baxter Funeral Home in Baxter, Tenn. Burial will be in New Home cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Otis O. Conner

LEWISPORT - Otis O. Conner, 58, of Lewisport died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Oct. 24, 1945, in Lewisport, the son of James E. and Ella (Bartlett) Conner. He was a member of Lewisport Baptist Church, was employed by the Kentucky Department of Highways and was a farmer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ella Conner, in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Conner of Lewisport; two sons, Otis O. Conner Jr. and Michael Conner, both of Lewisport; a daughter, Tammy L. McManaway of Reynolds Station; two brothers, John Conner of Evansville and Ed Conner of Lewisport; two sisters, Edna Masterson and Gracie Masterson, both of Hawesville; his father, James E. Conner of Lewisport; and four grandchildren, Makala and Austin McManaway and Jordan and Leslie Conner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Lewisport Baptist Church with the Rev. Curtis Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Lewisport cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Taylor-Raymond-Spear Funeral Home in Lewisport.

Juanita Weissberg
05/29/04

Juanita Weissberg, 89, of 3-D Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1914, in Daviess County retired as unit buying controller at Sears & Roebuck, Inc., after 37 years.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, David "Squeaky" Weissberg; a stepson, Terry Weissberg and wife Kay of Lanesville, Ind.; and two stepgrandchildren, Ian Weissberg and Whitney Weissberg.

Services are at 3 p.m. today at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today at James H. Davis. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the donor's favorite charity.

J B Embry

Mr. J B Embry, 76, of Lexington, formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lexington. He was the owner and broker of the Golden Rule Realty and had attended Murray State University. He was the son of the late William C. and Stella E. Embry.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Taylor Embry of Lexington; two sons and their wives, James B. (Mary Anne) Embry, DMD, of Lexington and Barry S. (Patricia) Embry of Owensboro; one daughter and her husband, Polly (James T.) Moore of Bowling Green; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Fallis of Pierre, S.D., Thelma Parks of Owensboro and Lois Hawkins of Newburgh, Ind.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro.

Lillie Markham Layman

STURGIS - Lillie Markham Layman, 91, of Sturgis died Friday, May 28, 2004, at 10:15 a.m. at Hermitage Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Owensboro. Lillie Markham Layman was born Oct. 27, 1912, in Union County to Joseph W. and Emily Young Markham. She graduated from Sturgis High School in 1930. Mrs. Layman attended Western Kentucky University while teaching at Sturgis Elementary School and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. During her teaching career she was honored as a National Teacher of the Year. She retired from the Union County schools in 1974 with 38 years of service. Lillie married Glenn H. Layman on Oct. 27, 1946. They lived in Sturgis until 1994 when they moved to Owensboro. She was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, the S.A.M. group and the Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; two brothers, Joe W. Markham Jr. and Harry Markham; and four sisters, Martha Markham, Selma Hinman, Helen Ash and Eva McCleskey.

Survivors include a sister, Sue Magan of Owensboro; and nieces and nephews, including a niece, Jane Markham of Owensboro.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with the Rev. Greg Faulls officiating. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge cemetery in Sturgis. Calling time is 10 a.m. Sunday until service time at 2 p.m. at Whitsell Funeral Home.

Eugene A. Nelson
05/28/04

Eugene A. Nelson, 77, of Owensboro died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on July 13, 1926, in Muhlenberg County to the late Elmer and Jennie (Bruce) Nelson. He was the plant superintendent at Modern Welding Co., retiring after 50 years of employment. He was a member of Owensboro Christian Church and was an Army veteran and avid Kentucky Wesleyan College basketball fan. He was preceded in death by eight siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nora Sheriff Nelson; three children, Marty Vaughn and husband Barry of Madisonville, Bruce A. Nelson and wife Phyllis of Hanson and Jennie Nelson Coyle and husband Barry of Madisonville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a sister, Helen Newcom of Bremen.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Utica cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Building Fund, Owensboro Christian Church, 2818 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303 or KWC Men's Basketball, c/o Development Office, Kentucky Wesleyan College, P.O. Box 1039, Owensboro, KY 42302-1039.
