Margaret Corine Montgomery, 80, of 1914 South Griffith Ave., Owensboro, died at 3:49 p.m., Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Ohio County and retired from Owensboro Area Vocational School as a secretary. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and quilting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. "Rock" Montgomery, who died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Powers of Owensboro; grandchildren, Tracy King and husband David of Lexington, Mark A. "Tony" Powers of Florida and Prentiss Terry and her husband Brian of Florida; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Michael King of Lexington; several nieces and nephews; and a sister, Lorene Kizer of Florida.

Services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home chapel. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Elmwood cemetery. The Rev. Richard Powers will officiate. The family wishes that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Carl Henry Animal Shelter.

Riley Jo Schmoldt

DECATUR, Ill. - Riley Jo Schmoldt, infant daughter of Anthony J. and Holly L. (Draeger) Schmoldt, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Carol Jo Vecchie Women and Children's Center at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Riley was born on June 5, 2004.

Surviving are her parents of Decatur; her grandparents, Joe and Gayle Draeger and Richard and Gay Schmoldt of Decatur; her great-grandparents, Sue Raines, Bobby and Fosteen Clements, Jerry and Dorothy Draeger of Owensboro, Margaret Campbell of Springfield and Raymond and Elaine Schmoldt of Decatur; aunts and uncles, Brock and Heather Meadows, Haley Draeger and Aaron Schmoldt of Decatur and Amanda Schmoldt of Springfield; and cousins, McKensie Meadows and Jordan Schmoldt. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Dorothy Draeger of Owensboro and Stanley Campbell of Mason City.

Private family services will be held at Graceland-Fairlawn Funeral Home in Decatur. Memorials can be made to Trisomy 18 Support Foundation, 4301 Connecticut Ave., N.W. Suite 404, Washington, D.C. 20008-2369.

William A. 'Bill' Rhodes

William A. "Bill" Rhodes, 70, formerly of Owensboro died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Florida Hospital Heartland in Sebring, Fla. He was born on Feb. 13, 1934, in Hamilton County, Ill., to the late Major and Ethel (Williams) Rhodes. He retired after 18 years as a trucking executive with A&H Truck Lines. He was a member of Fairmount Church of Christ in Sebring.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Frieda J. Rhodes; two sons, Roger Rhodes of Lexington and John Rhodes of Cookeville, Tenn.; a daughter, Terri Whitehouse of Franklin, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Nathan Rhodes and Lauren Rhodes of Lexington, Jill Rhodes and Abby Rhodes of Cookeville and Ashley Whitehouse and Alicia Whitehouse of Franklin, Tenn.; a sister, Edith Birchler of Terre Haute, Ind.; and a brother, Stanley Rhodes of Germantown, Tenn.

Services are at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Entombment is in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 3 until 8 p.m. on Monday and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Tuesday at James H. Davis Funeral Home.

Fred Nunnelly Sievers

EVANSVILLE - Fred Nunnelly Sievers, 82, of Evansville died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at VNA Hospice Center in Evansville. He was born in Panther on Jan. 12, 1922. He was the son of Frederick Luther Sievers, a country doctor, and Madie (Meece) Sievers, a schoolteacher. Mr. Sievers graduated from West Louisville High School in Kentucky in 1939. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He later served as a first lieutenant in the Army Reserve. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1949 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism.

Fred Sievers worked at newspapers in Owensboro and Newport News, Va., before joining The Evansville Press in 1951. He became a general assignment reporter, writing stories throughout the Tri-State. Later he wrote about county government and the courts. In 1970 he was named Indianapolis bureau chief for The Evansville Press. He was recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Indiana state law. He retired from The Evansville Press in 1980, but continued writing the weekly garden column he began for The Evansville Press in February 1969. After the newspapers changed ownership in 1986, he wrote the column for The Evansville Courier and then The Evansville Courier & Press, when the newspaper's name changed in 1999. His last column was published on May 23, 2004.

He was a member of the Holly Society of America (Three Rivers Chapter), Garden Writers Association, Tri-State Azalea Society, Southwestern Indiana Master Gardeners Association, Willard Library Park Committee and The Friends of Willard Library.

Fred received numerous awards honoring his achievements throughout his career. These included the First Amendment Award from the Indiana State Bar Association in 1978 and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for "Distinguished Service to Journalism" from the Society of Professional Journalists on Nov. 6, 1982. He was also awarded the James Bethel Gresham Award in 1967 from The Evansville Bar Association. This was to acknowledge "Promotion of the people's understanding of the law." He received a first place award from the Indianapolis Press Club on October 21, 1995, for his work at The Evansville Press. On Oct. 21, 1995, he received The Joseph C. McDaniel Award for the Holly Society of America for "Outstanding contribution and dedicated service to the Great Rivers Chapter." In 1971 he was awarded the Eugene J. Cadou Memorial Award from Indiana UPI for outstanding reporting. He received the Indiana Medical Association Journalism Award in 1968. On Nov. 15, 1981, a proclamation was made honoring Mr. Sievers for "contributions made to the educational, political, business, and commercial health of our region" from David L. Rice, president of Indiana State University in Evansville (University of Southern Indiana) and Southern Indiana Higher Education, Inc. issued by Roland M. Eckels. In 1986 at DePauw University he was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame by the Society of Professional Journalists. In 1965 he was named to a National Panel for the American Assembly program of Columbia University. at Harriman, N.Y.

During his newspaper career Mr. Sievers authored many series of articles on a wide array of diverse topics. These included Medicare, birth control and the funeral industry. He appreciated and excelled at the craft of writing. Fred's interest in gardening began as a hobby. However, he soon grew to be a recognized authority and writer on the subject.

Mr. Sievers was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Billie Moore Sievers; and his brother Norbert Sievers. He is survived by his daughter, Arlene Moore Sievers of North Olmsted, Ohio. She is a librarian at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He is also survived by his nephew, Mark Sievers; and a great-nephew, Stanley Sievers of Nicholasville.

Services will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, at Alexander Funeral Home, North Chapel, officiated by Chaplain LeRoy Dilger with entombment at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Friends may call Wednesday, June 9, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to VNA Hospice Center located at 610 East Walnut St., Evansville, IN 47708 or Evansville Zoo Guild at 2421 Bement Ave., Evansville, IN 47720, or Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy Group, 1505 North Delaware St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46202.

Randell Lee Jones

Randell Lee Jones, 62, of Owensboro died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at his home. He had worked for Specialty Containers.

Survivors include two daughters, Alicia Mae Daugherty and Rebecca Sue Estes; his father, Jessie Lee Jones; two brothers, Jerry Jones and Herschel Jones; and three sisters, Venessia Cravens, Alice Hurt and Sandra Patton.

Elsie M. Greenlee

Elsie M. Greenlee, 89, formerly of Owensboro, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at the home of her daughter in New Haven. She was born on April 26, 1915, in Olaton to the late Fitzhugh and Otha (Keith) Martin. She was a member of Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nade Greenlee, on Nov. 30, 1980; a son, Donald Greenlee on Jan. 30, 2003; a granddaughter, Candice Fancher on July 4, 1988; a brother, Wesley Martin; and a sister, Helen Watts.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Greenlee of Panama City, Fla., and Kenneth Greenlee of Owensboro; three daughters, Martha Thelen of Brandenburg, Mary Renfrow-Maupin of New Haven and Margaret Papantonopoulos of Robinson, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step- grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a brother, J.C. Martin of Louisville.

Services are at noon on Monday, June 7, 2004, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday at James H. Davis Funeral Home in Owensboro. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to American Cancer Society, Suite 101, 319 W. 10th St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

Narvel 'Buddy' Wood Jr.

ISLAND - Narvel "Buddy" Wood Jr., 64, of Island died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. "Buddy" was born Feb. 22, 1940, in McLean County to the late Narvel and JoLynne Rickard Wood. He received a bachelors degree in agriculture from Murray State University and was a member of Worthington Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a retired farmer, owner of McLean County Fuels and a partner in Green Valley Farm Supply. He also participated in many farm-related organizations and activities. "Buddy" enjoyed NASCAR racing, the Louisville Cardinals, baseball, water sports and being actively involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Wood; a daughter and her husband, Kim and Paul Roberts of West Louisville; a son, Narvel Wayne Wood III of Island; two grandsons, Brandon Chase Roberts and Tyler Wood Roberts, both of West Louisville; a brother and his wife, Doug and Sandra Wood of Island; a sister and her husband, Anne and Vechel Conrad of Island; his father and mother-in-law, Raymond and Cleo Carnal of Murray; a sister-in-law and her husband, Sue and Richard Smith of Murray; and eight nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel, with the Rev. Charles R. Love and the Rev. Ray Binegar officiating. Burial will be in Worthington Chapel cemetery in McLean County. Friends may visit with the Wood family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at Musters in Livermore.

Stephen Wayne 'Bones' Towery

Stephen Wayne "Bones" Towery, 36, of 2712 Wimsatt Court, Owensboro, died at 6 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at his home. He was born May 30, 1968, in Daviess County and was disabled. He was a graduate of Daviess County High School and was an avid volunteer for various agencies including Hospice and the Wendell Foster Center. He enjoyed spending time with the elderly and volunteered with handicapped children. He was a member of the NRA and a 1991 Star Award for his volunteer services. He also enjoyed fishing and reading books. He had the world's biggest heart and will be deeply missed by all of those who knew him.

Survivors include his parents, Larry and Rose Towery of Owensboro; his companion, Anita Bryant of Knottsville; two nephews, Luke and Jacob of Owensboro; a niece, Cassidy of Owensboro; his grandmother, Catherine Wimsatt of Owensboro; a brother and his wife, Joe and Christal Towery of Owensboro; and two sisters, Becky and Sarah Towery of Owensboro.

Services are at noon Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church in Owensboro with the Rev. Freddie Byrd officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association or Wendell Foster Center or Blessed Mother Catholic Church Building Fund.

Helen C. Russelburg Crowe

WHITING, Ind. - Helen C. Russelburg Crowe, 59, of Whiting, Ind., died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. She was born in Daviess County to her mother, Ruby Russelburg Sutton, who survives. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Whiting. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lynn Crowe; "her father, Robert Russelburg"; and two brothers, Wayne and Darrell Russelburg.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Douglas Crowe; three sons, Billy Crowe of Fordsville and Jamie and Bradley Crowe, both of Whiting; six grandchildren; four brothers, Leo, Charles and Jerry Russelburg, all of Whitesville, and Paul Russelburg of Daviess County; and a sister, Judy McCarty of Owensboro.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Whitesville. Burial will be in Cates cemetery in Whitesville. Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cecil Funeral Home.

Mary C. Durbin

Mary C. Durbin, 82, of 111 W. 18th St., Owensboro, died at 5:23 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born April 17, 1922, in Daviess County to Richard Emmett Head and Ada Mathilda Payne Head and retired from the Executive Inn as a breakfast bar server after nine years. She was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and her pet dog, Christie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Durbin on Dec. 7, 1973; two brothers, Bernard Head in 1942 and Francis Head in 1987; and a sister, Mary Leora Payne in 1997.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard Martin and Wanda Durbin of Cleveland, Tenn., David E. and Sheila Durbin of Panther, James L. and Cindy Durbin of Philpot and Richard and Mary Durbin of Owensboro; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Leo Hagan of Owensboro, Linda C. and Robert Shoemaker of Florrissant, Mo., and Connie J. and Danny Thompson of St. Joseph; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; three brothers, James E. Head of Henderson, Earl E. Head of Louisville and Virgil Head of Whitesville; four sisters, Ann Payne of Owensboro, Theresa Rohr of Phoenix, Mary Magdalen Head of Owensboro and Bertha Serich of Lennon, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Mother Catholic Church in Owensboro with the Rev. Freddie Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Mater Dolorosa cemetery. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Prayers will be said at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and Daughters of Isabella rites will be at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
