Noble H. Phillips

Noble H. Phillips, 90, of 2504 Citation Ave., Owensboro, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on Jan. 18, 1914, in Ohio County to the late James Ivy and Georgia Lois (Harrison) Phillips. He was a retired, self-employed farmer and a member of Lewis Lane Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise P. Phillips; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Martha Phillips of Hendersonville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Leslye Tucker of Gallatin, Tenn., James David Phillips of Miami and Nickie Deonne Phillips of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren Tucker, Cayce Tucker and Bailey Tucker.
Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Tracy Ann (Metzger) Marksberry

EVANSVILLE - Tracy Marksberry, 42, of Evansville passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Tracy was a homemaker and avid collector.
Tracy is survived by husband Steven Marksberry of Evansville; children Zachary, Chelsea, Jacob and Joshua Marksberry; her parents, Ralph and Rita Metzger of Hatfield, Ind.; brothers Steven Metzger and his wife, Diana, of Owensboro, Randall Metzger and his wife, Laurie, of Chandler, Ind., and Tom Metzger and his wife, Deanna, of Greenfield, Ind.; three nieces and four nephews; and many very good friends. Tracy was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa Gail Metzger; and grandparents, George and Thelma Tevault and Frank and Viola Metzger.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., in Evansville. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. today, June 17, at Browning Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Spina Bifida Association of Indiana.
Herbert L. Webster

Herbert L. Webster, 75, of 1632 J.R. Miller Blvd., Owensboro, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his home. He was born Feb. 18, 1929, in Daviess County to the late Robert Lee and Sylvia Dorece (Canary) Webster. He was a retired carpenter and an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Teresa Hanley Webster, on Aug. 31, 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alsup Webster; a daughter, Brenda Carol Webster of Owensboro; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Franklin Webster of Indianapolis, George Webster of Owensboro, Gene Webster of Colorado and David Webster of Owensboro; and a sister, Carolyn Anthony of Owensboro.
Services are at 10 a.m. Monday, June 21, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sorgho. Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Maurice Allan Lovan

Maurice Allan Lovan, 68, of 1329 Center St., Owensboro, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the Hermitage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Nov. 17, 1935, in Providence to Pearl and Ida Mayes Lovan. Mr. Lovan was a counselor for New Horizons and an Army veteran. He had attended Indiana University. He was a member of Owensboro Christian Church and a long-term member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He is survived by two brothers, Paul Wayne Lovan and William Carroll Lovan of Clay; two sisters, Barbara Hardeman of Providence and Lillian Stewart of Moab, Utah; a nephew, James L. Lovan of Bowling Green; and his caretakers, Samuel Faulkner and David Matthews, both of Owensboro.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be made to New Horizons, 320 Clay St., Owensboro, KY 42303.
Joan Gower

Joan Gower, 67, of 3426 B. Wandering Lane, Owensboro, died Thursday, June 17, 2004, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Gower; two sons, Marcus Martin and Bruce Martin; and two daughters, Candace Martin and Peggy Freeman.

Robert 'Alf' Edney

BOONVILLE, Ind. - Robert "Alf" Edney, 77, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Bob started in 1944 part-time in the mines planting trees and in 1948 he worked in engineering and prospect drilling. He started his mining career on May 7, 1954, at Peabody Sunlight Mine Local 1016 and worked in production until 1968. Bob belonged to the United Mine Workers of America for more than 50 years and served in every local union office. From 1973 to 1977 he served as District 11 president, International Executive board member and also as district secretary treasurer. District 11 included the entire state of Indiana.
Bob returned to the mines after serving these positions and was a shovel operator at Oakland City Arycoe Mine, Local 352, where he took an active role in his local union. The mine closed in 1978 and he transferred to the Chandler Aryshire Mine, Local Union 1907, where he served as vice president of the Local, COMPAC Committee and Organizing Committee and continued to serve in these positions until his passing. He also served on various Black Lung advisory boards.
Bob was one of two members in Indiana who served on the Pensioner Leadership Committee. He also served as president of the Retired Miners of Southern Indiana. In 1999, he was recognized as UMWA Retirees in the United Mine Workers journal. Bob has been a delegate to the last 10 International Conventions, dating back to 1973, the most recent convention was held in September 2003 in Las Vegas.
Bob was active in Boonville's Little League Program for many years and the American Legion Baseball Program. Bob was a member of Stranger's Rest Masonic Lodge No. 240, Evansville Scottish Rite, Hadi Shrine of Evansville, Boonville American Legion Post No. 200 and Boonville VFW Post No. 3418. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret Edney, in 1999.
Bob is survived by his mother, Beulah Marlow of Owensboro; two daughters, Linda Edney of Newburgh, Ind., and Connie Ulrey and her husband Roger of Boonville; three grandchildren, Rob Ulrey and his wife Jana, Ryan Ulrey and his wife Amy and Jeff Ulrey and his wife Kristy; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Rae Ulrey and Kyra Rae Ulrey; a sister, Janet Raymond and her husband Ronnie of Owensboro; and two nieces and three nephews.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Koehler Funeral Home, Boonville Chapel, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery in Boonville, with military rites by the Warrick County Veterans Memorial Services. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to UMWA Local 1907 or ARC Industries.
Virgil D. Sauls

HENDERSON - Virgil D. Sauls, 73, of Henderson died at 5:58 a.m., Monday, June 21, 2004, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a 47-year member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America and was selected to the Cardinal District Hall of Fame. He sang in eight barbershop quartets and was a member of four district champion quartets. He was a member and former director of the Evansville Songfellows, a member of the Terre Haute (Ind.) Banks of the Wabash Chorus and was past director of the Evansville Sweet Adelines Chorus. He was a Korean War Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Susan Mann Sauls; four daughters, Diana Garvey of Indianapolis, Karen Lenning of Evansville, Mischelle Stocum of Mayfield and Marianne Cox of Evansville; three sons, David Sauls of Perkiomenville, Pa., and Donald Sauls and Daniel Sauls, both of Evansville; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two grandsons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Canon John Rettger will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and until 9:30 a.m. Friday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home in Henderson. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Harmony Foundation of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Pallbearers will be Don Julian, Dick Griffith, Tom Anderson, Dick Earnest, Steve Johnson and Ken Mitz.
James R. 'Tooter' Maysey

CLOVERPORT - James R. "Tooter" Maysey, 65, of Cloverport, formerly of Stephensport, died Monday, June 21, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born Nov. 24, 1938, in Breckinridge County. He was a son of the late Everett Lewis Maysey. He was a retired riverboat captain after working 30 years on the Ohio, Illinois and Mississippi rivers. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Claudia Maysey of Cloverport; his mother, Dorothy Oliver Maysey Jones of Brandenburg; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. "Jimmy" and Tina Maysey of Stephensport; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Alisa Maysey of Cave City; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Sonya and David Raley of Horse Branch; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Ricky and Kathy Milam of Tennyson, Ind.; a brother, Everett Lewis Maysey Jr. of Oklahoma; and nine grandchildren, Krista, Jennifer, Chris, Nathaniel, Abby and Dylan Maysey, Daphne and Deanna Turpin and Justin Milam.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wallace Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeff Maysey officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill cemetery in Stephensport. Marjorie A. 'Margie' Keenan

Marjorie A. "Margie" Keenan of Owensboro died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born May 29, 1931, in Morganfield, the daughter of Atlee and Mary L. (Hawkins) Pate. She was a member of Walnut Memorial Baptist Church in Owensboro, where she was a member of the church prayer chain and was a past Bible study teacher. She received the Governor's Award for her participation with the Literacy Council in 1992-93. She served with the Greater Orlando Baptist Association on the Volunteer Home Missions Team. She was active in the WMU. Margie enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading her Bible, crossword puzzles, UK basketball, game shows and her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Atlee Pate, in 1939; her mother, Louis Hawkins Pate, in 2002; a brother, Romuald Pate, in 2003; and a great-grandson, Eric S. Rice, in 1998.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Robert L. Keenan of Owensboro; two sons, Mitchell and his wife Karen Keenan of Lewisport and Terry and his wife Kathy Keenan of Hawesville; two daughters, Marilyn G. Rice and Cheryl L. Keenan, both of Owensboro; a brother, Marvin Pate of Cloverport; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, at Lewisport Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Howard officiating. Burial will be in Lewisport cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Taylor-Raymond-Spear Funeral Home in Lewisport.
Lorene Johnson

HARTFORD - Lorene Johnson, 84, of 906 Silver Beach Road, Hartford, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Calloway County to John L. Parker and Ruth George Parker. She was a retired homemaker and member of Barnett's Creek Baptist Church. Her husband, Vern H. Johnson, died April 14, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Mike Johnson and his wife Jean Johnson of Hartford; four grandsons, Mike Johnson Jr. of Owensboro, Rob Johnson of McHenry, Darin Graves of Hartford and Chris Graves of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Michelle Payne of Morgantown and Kim Johnson of Taylorsville; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mervel Norman of Savanna, Ill.
Private memorial services will be held at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home Wednesday, June 23, with the Rev. Robert Judd officiating. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Ohio County, 1211 Main St., Hartford, KY 42347.
