Bruce Allen Payne

Bruce Allen Payne, 42, of Free Silver Road, Knottsville, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at his home. He was born in Daviess County and was a member of St. William Catholic Church. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his father, James Alvin Payne, in 1992.
Survivors include his mother, Joan Payne of Knottsville; four brothers, Ronnie Payne of Hawesville, Ricky and Kevin Payne of Knottsville and Tommy Payne of St. Johns, Ariz.; two sisters, Cathy Daugherty of Hawesville and Staci Crabtree of Utica; and six nephews and seven nieces.
Services are at 6 p.m. today at St. William Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. William cemetery in Knottsville. Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at the church. Cecil Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Association.
Donald C. Potter

GREENVILLE - Donald C. Potter, 80, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at 2:30 a.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital after months of illness. He was born in Wichita, Kan., on Nov. 16, 1923, and was a merchant in Greenville for more than 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Air Force. He was a prisoner of war for about five months and had received the Purple Heart. He was a life member of the VFW Post No. 5478 in Greenville and he had served on the Greenville City Council for 14 years. He served as interim mayor of Greenville for a short time.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, July 8, at 1 p.m. from Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville by Father Ben Luther and the Rev. Vernon Perdue. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville.
He is survived by his wife, Alliene Heltsley Potter of Greenville.
Friends may call at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville on Wednesday, July 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. Thursday. The family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, VFW Post No. 5478, Greenville, or a charity of choice.
Katherine Morris

LIVERMORE - Katherine Morris, 90, of Livermore died Monday, July 26, 2004, at her home in Livermore. Katherine Bell Johnson was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Butler County to the late C.J. and Rosie Johnson and was later married
, on Aug. 31, 1932, in Greenville to Russell Slaton Morris. She was a homemaker and a member of Livermore Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the church nursery for more than 30 years. Katherine was a member of the Red Hat Society and also enjoyed gardening, quilting, Atlanta Braves baseball and Kentucky Wildcat basketball. Her husband of 58 years, Russell S. Morris, died July 22, 1990. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lindell F. "Buddy" Morris, who died April 22, 2003; a son-in-law, Jim Latham, who died Sept. 15, 1999; and six siblings.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Russell J. and Margie Morris of Centertown, Robert R. and Scherry Morris of Wellington, Fla., Hollis McPherson of Cochran, Ga., and Ed and Vickie Morris of Livermore; four daughters and their husbands, Joline Latham of Livermore, Janie and Glenn Ford of Livermore, Patricia and Jim Watt Jr. of Greenville and Sue and Ray Higgs of Warner Robbins, Ga.; 29 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Livermore Chapel, with the Rev. James W. Watt Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery in Livermore. Friends may visit with the Morris family from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at Musters in Livermore.

Anna Lee Christian

Anna Lee Christian, 86, of Whitesville died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at the Carmel Home. She was a lifelong resident of Whitesville and a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. She was born in Daviess County, where she attended Stevens School and transferred to St. Mary's High School. As a young woman she worked in housekeeping and child care around the community. After her marriage she was employed at General Electric and owned and operated a general store at Oakley with her husband. In her later years she worked at the cafeteria of St. Mary's School, from which she retired in 1980. She was a skilled seamstress and quilter and was active in the St. Mary's quilting circle. She was a member of the parish altar society and a promoter of the Miraculous Medal Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis.
Survivors include two sons, Nick Christian of Sacramento and Michael Christian of Owensboro; three daughters, Carolyn Hawe of Louisville, Cabrini Smith of Greenbrier, Tenn., and Lavonne Masters of Evansville; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Saturday and after noon Sunday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Ronald Lee Greenwell Sr.

BEAVER DAM - Ronald Lee Greenwell Sr., 67, of Echols died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Ohio County Hospital. He was born in Ohio County and was a laborer and member of Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Greenwell; a sister, Betty Ambs; a brother, Bill Greenwell; and his parents, William and Mary Greenwell.
Survivors include his wife, June Williams Greenwell; two sons, Lee and wife, Charlene, Greenwell of McHenry and Donnie Greenwell of Echols; two daughters, Debra Rone of Echols and Kaye and husband, Davie, Kelley of Owensboro; two brothers, Wayne Greenwell of Owensboro and Jim Greenwell of Herndon, Va.; eight sisters, Catherine Wigginton, Phyllis Newton, Myrl Bloomquist, Annabel Curtis, Virginia Poulter and Dorothy Embry, all of Owensboro, Jane Ransom of Cox Creek and Katie McCullem of Hopkinsville; and seven grandchildren, Thomas Greenwell, Matthew Greenwell, Michael Shields, Nathen McIntyre, Adam Greenwell, David Kelley and Christopher Kelley.
Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will be in Pond Run cemetery in Echols. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to services Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the family to help with expenses.

BEAVER DAM - Mary Carolyn Baize Phelps, 85, of Beaver Dam died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Bowling Green. She was a homemaker and member of Cool Springs Baptist Church in Ohio County.
Survivors include two sons, Jackie Phelps and William Phelps; and two daughters, Frances Southard and Martha Frakes.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at William L. Danks Funeral Home. Burial: Fairview cemetery in Ohio County. Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Prentice Howden Smith

Prentice Howden Smith, 96, of Owensboro, formerly of Calhoun, died peacefully in his sleep at his residence at One Park Place in Owensboro on Sunday, July 25, 2004. He was a member of Mount Liberty Baptist Church and also attended the Poplar Grove Presbyterian Church. He was also a member and past master of Monsarratt Lodge No. 379 F&AM, where he recently received his 75-year membership award.
"PH" of "Prentice" as many of his friends and family called him, was born Aug. 25, 1907. Just one month short of his 97th birthday, he had outlived many of his friends and relatives. His wife of 65 years, Hugh Bell Smith, died Aug. 17, 1997. Mr. Smith was self-employed as a farmer and as the owner-operator of a service station and Hotpoint dealership in Calhoun. He was also a licensed state electrical inspector, having been employed for many years by the Rural Electrical Administration (REA), the Green River Electric Co. and the Pennyrile Electric Co. Among current and former Kenergy employees, he still has many surviving friends and associates.
Mr. Smith lived all of his life in McLean County, having been born on the family farm near Guffie. He and his wife lived in a house on Main Street in Calhoun for many years, but, after her death, he donated that house to McLean County Historical and Genealogical Society. Mr. Smith continued to spend much of his time at the Guffie farm, raising cattle and crops and flying his airplane until he was in his late 80s. Area residents may recall seeing Mr. Smith's airplane taking off and landing from a field on the Guffie farm. Often he would just fly around the farm to see where the cattle were, although he and his wife also flew on trips to Michigan, Tennessee and other locations. For the past seven years, health concerns caused Mr. Smith to move to One Park Place in Owensboro.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Dwight Stevenson of Guffie and Ann Arbor, Mich.; two granddaughters and their husbands, Ann and David Chapman and Melissa and David Rensi. Both granddaughters live in Michigan with their families, which include three of Mr. Smith's great-grandchildren, Amelia Chapman, Lydia Rensi and Chad Rensi. Among other surviving relatives are first cousins, Forest Lee Wilhite, Julia Thomas Hayden, Ava Edwards Bivins, Wilma Edwards Ayer and Mabel Edwards Wilcox. Other more distant relatives also survive but are widely scattered.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel, with Dr. Richard Sams officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery. Friends may visit with the Smith family from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at Musters in Calhoun. Masonic services for Mr. Smith will be at 7 p.m. today at Musters in Calhoun and will be conducted by the Monsarratt Lodge No. 379 F&AM.

Charles R. Smith

Charles R. Smith, 74, of 213 Stockton Drive, Owensboro, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Greenville and was retired from Green River Steel Corp. as a pipefitter. He also had been a real estate agent for Home Realty Co. He was the former president and secretary of the United Steel Workers Union Local No. 4959, and had been on the board of Green River Area Federal Credit Union and the Roosevelt House. He was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church. He enjoyed basketball, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Julia Lovell Smith; brothers, Roy W. Smith and Robert M. Smith; and a sister, Ann Allison Smith.
Surviving is his wife of 46 years, Carol Kendall Smith; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim and Greg Shannon of Owensboro and Julie Smith of Madisonville; a son, Kendall Smith of Owensboro; a brother, Rodney Smith of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren, Nathan and Brittany Wood of Madisonville, Kyle Sawyer-Smith of Owensboro and Jessica and Nicholas Shannon of Owensboro.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at Glenn Funeral Home chapel, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after noon Saturday at the funeral home. Norma Dean Williams Jones

Norma Dean Williams Jones, 78, formerly of Etoile, died at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at her home at 2825 Windsor Ave., Owensboro. She was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Celina, Tenn., to the late John Alex and Lela Perl (Long) Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence M. Jones, on Dec. 25, 2001.
Surviving is her daughter, Laurel Faye Jones Gibson; a son-in-law, Dennis Leigh, and granddaughter, Alexandra Laurel-Leigh, of Owensboro; three brothers, Cecil B. and Lecil E. Williams of Bowling Green and Jerome D. Williams of Lexington; two sisters, Mary Pearl Fisher and Billie Jean Stephens of Bowling Green; six nieces; three nephews; and several cousins.
Norma Jones held bachelor's, master's and Rank I degrees from Western Kentucky University. She retired from a teaching career of 32 years that started in a one-room school at Dry Ridge and ended at Austin Tracy Elementary in Barren County. She was an active member or officeholder of NEA, KEA, KRTA, BCEA, IRA, PTA, 4-H leader, Homemakers, Democratic Women's Club, Associated Country Women of the World, Glasgow Hospice, Lioness Club and received endless awards and recognition for service to her school and community. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She loved her Lord and her schoolchildren.
All services will be at A.F. Crow and Sons Funeral Home in Glasgow. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at A.F. Crow and Sons Funeral Home. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial in Caney Fork Baptist Church cemetery in Etoile. James H. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
Dora Mae Raley

LOUISVILLE - Dora Mae Raley, 79, of Louisville passed away Monday, July 12, 2004, at her home. She was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church. She volunteered at Dare to Care and also at her church.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph A. Raley; three sons, Joe (Rhonda), Ron (Patty) and Mike (Connie); a sister, Gene Markert; three grandchildren, Karen Delph, Kim Medley and Brad Raley; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Resthaven Memorial Park in Louisville. The funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 14, at her church at noon.
