Mary Jo Stockmeyer, hospice nurse

Mary Jo Stockmeyer comforted the dying for 34 years as a hospice nurse at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

She put her heart into her work, helping patients face death and comforting families who watched their loved ones die.

Ms. Stockmeyer, 64, died Wednesday in the care of the hospice nurses with whom she worked at St. Elizabeth.

"When she went into a coma, the hospice nurses asked us to bring her home," said one of Ms. Stockmeyer's daughters, Mary Jo Brulport of Newport.

"That's what they said: "Bring her home to us.' "

Ms. Stockmeyer was born in 1933 in Ft. Mitchell and grew up in Villa Hills. She went to school at Villa Madonna and went to nursing school at St. Elizabeth.

She married in the mid-1950s, and had four children, who she raised on her own after she and her husband separated.

She supported her children by her work as a hospice nurse, which she loved. As a nurse, she understood that caring for the family of the dying was as important as caring for the dying.

"The patient was important, but the family was as much a priority - if not more so - as the patient was because they were the survivors," Ms. Brulport said.

Ms. Brulport said her mom was one of the first hospice nurses in Northern Kentucky and her ideas about how a patient should be treated became a standard practice.

"You wouldn't believe how important it is to have a good nurse like that," Ms. Brulport said. "They bring a calm over you and . . . they show you that the patient wants you to know they want you to go on."

Ms. Stockmeyer would have retired in April.

Other survivors include sons, James Osborne Stockmeyer of Falmouth and Mark Joseph Stockmeyer of Covington; daughter M. Katherine Clore of Hebron; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014, or American Diabetes. Association, 2805 W. McMicken Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45225. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
