James Ronald Smith

ELKTON - James Ronald Smith, 64, of 1455 Johnston Road, Elkton, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at 11:25 p.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 15, 1940, in Anderson, S.C., the son of Bill Bell and Helen Brown Smith. He was a business manager of Smith Heating and Air for 31 years in Easley, S.C. He was a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church in Easley. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife of 36 years, Louisa Townsend Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Gayla Monice Slaughter Smith of Elkton; two sons, Scott (Sylvia) Smith of Liberty, S.C., and Mike (Sabrinia) Smith of Easley; a stepson, James Bryan Hancock of Owensboro; three stepdaughters, Jacque Fuller and Amy Vincent, both of Greenville, and Jennifer Striss of Anderson, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Billy Bell and Jacky Smith, both of Pelzer, S.C.; and a sister, Wanda Smith of Washington.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Gary's Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerry Sweeney. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery in Easley. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the James Ronald Smith Fund, First National Bank, 401 N. Main St., Greenville, KY 42345. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Florence A. Christie Abel

Florence A. Christie Abel, 89, passed away April 24, 2005, at Leisure Years Nursing Home. She was born June 1, 1915, in Maceo to Benjamin and Talfa (Sapp) Ladd. Florence was a lifelong resident of Daviess County and a member of Crabtree Avenue Baptist Church. She had also been a longtime member of Third Baptist Church as a young mother. She worked at General Electric in the 1940s and later retired from Field Packing Co. in 1979, after 25 years of service. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and visiting with friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ernest Christie, in 1980, and her husband, Virgil F. Abel, in 1986; a granddaughter, Karen Nantz, in 1991; a sister, Mary Hayden, in 2003; and a son-in-law, Dr. Matthew Moroz, in 2005.

Surviving are her children, Doris D. Moroz of Nashville, Bobby T. Christie (Kathy) of Owensboro, Martine L. Bailey (Arnold) of Nashville, Alan S. Christie (Betty) of Owensboro, Larry Stephen Christie (M. Lee) of Springfield, Ill., and J. Sam Christie of Owensboro; a stepson, Allen Abel (Carol) of Bowling Green; a stepdaughter, Lindia O'Connor of Lilburn, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a brother, Bob Ladd of Owensboro. Florence is also survived by four faithful caretakers who were her lifeline to the world, Cecilia Christie, Donna Head, Lesley St. John and Marilyn Wilkins.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Glenn Funeral Home, with Pastor Greg Huguley of Lewis Lane Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer's Association, Evansville Region, 4770 Covert Ave., Suite No. 211, Evansville, IN 47714.

Claude Newman Sr.
05/2004/2005

Claude Newman Sr., 82, of 6001 Ware Road, Philpot, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at his home. A son of the late John Franklin Newman and Hellen Blandford Newman, the Daviess County native was active in farming, owning and operating, with his sons, Sunny View Farms Dairy and Sunny View Farms in Daviess and Ohio counties. Mr. Newman was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church, the Daviess County Farm Bureau and the Daviess County Lions Club. He had served on the Daviess County Democrat Executive Committee and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was active in dairyman associations as a state and regional director and as past president of the State Dairy Council. He was a Kentucky Colonel, received the Service to Agriculture citation from the commonwealth of Kentucky and was named an honorary commissioner of agriculture.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Rebecca Kuegel Newman; his sons, Claude B. (Anita) Newman Jr. of Philpot and Mike (Marsha) Newman of Beaver Dam; his grandchildren, Carrie (Donnie) Newman Munsey, Molly (Gavin) Newman Roberts, Claude B. (Heather) Newman III, Melissa (Richard) Newman Reynolds and Michael (Kelly) Newman Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Anna Newman Bivins of Owensboro and Amy Newman McNamara of New Albany.

The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethabara Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Glenn Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Bethabara Baptist Church or Hospice and Palliative Care of the Ohio Valley.

Jerry Watts
04/27/2005

God's plan for Jerry Watts was fulfilled on April 26, 2005. Total healing came at his home at 1:05 a.m. when Jerry went home to be with the Lord. Jerry was born on April 28, 1946, in Hope Mills, N.C. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Watts, on May 27, 2000; and his brother, Bobby Watts, on Nov. 8, 1998. Jerry was a member of the Deanefield Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, boating, skiing, NASCAR racing, UK basketball and working outside. He was a retired electrician of 22 years from Big Rivers (LG&E). Jerry served with the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell from 1966 to 1968. He served in the Vietnam War from September 1967 to October 1968, and was very proud to have served his country.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Judy Watts; his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Rick Mattingly of Fordsville; his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Wendy Watts of Paducah; two grandchildren, Drew Mattingly and Bailey Watts; his dad and stepmom, Harry and Jeanne Watts of Palatine, Ill.; a brother, Eddie Watts of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two stepbrothers, John and Jimmy Boyer of Illinois; a stepsister, Janice Freund of Illinois; a brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Michelle Baker of Newburgh, Ind.; two sisters-in-law, Pat Pfingston of Evansville and Monica Havline of Huntington, Ind.; his mother and father-in-law, Ed and Lola Baker of Reynolds Station; an aunt, Ollie Norris of Bennettsville, S.C.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Deanefield cemetery with military honors. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Deanefield Baptist Church Building Fund, Hospice of Ohio County or Fordsville Baptist Church Building Fund.

C.L. Meador Jr.
05/2004/2005

HARNED - C.L. Meador Jr., 89, of Harned died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. He retired from Kosmos Cement Plant.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Meador; a brother, Charles Meador; and a sister, Nancy Galloway.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home. Burial: Ivy Hill cemetery in Hardinsburg. Visitation: From 3:30 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James D. Carter

CENTRAL CITY - James D. Carter, 31, of Central City died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton, Tenn.

Survivors include his wife, Traci Scoggins Carter; three sons, Logan Carter, Tyler Carter and James Michael Thompson; a daughter, Kayla Thompson; his father, Odvert Carter Sr.; his mother, Shirley Whitaker; and two brothers, Odvert Carter Jr. and Brandon Whitaker.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial: Cherry Grove cemetery in Greenville. Visitation: After 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Martin J. Stringer
04/27/2005

LOUISVILLE - Martin J. Stringer, 81, of Louisville passed away Monday, April 25, 2005, at Baptist Hospital East. He was a native of Daviess County, a retired pressman for the Courier-Journal with 27 years of service, a member of the German American Club, Highland American Legion Post No. 201 and Hunsinger Lane Baptist Church and a volunteer for Mended Hearts. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a crew member of the ship USS Bunker Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Catherine Stringer; and a sister, Doris Ann Stringer.

He is survived by his son, Ronald M. "Butch" Stringer and his fiancee, Nancy; two daughters, Judy S. Brown of Georgetown and Sharon S. Parsons (Michael) of Henderson; a sister, Oleane E. Roper (John) of Nashville; a brother, Billy E. Stringer (Betty) of Nashville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. EST Thursday at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hunsinger Lane Baptist Church.

Catherine Terese Stacy

Catherine Terese Stacy, 83, of Owensboro died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Chicago. She retired from Illinois Central Railroad. She was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Patrick Stacy, in 1995; and a granddaughter, Angela Marlowe, in 1978.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Eileen and Vince Payne and Ellen and Mike Marlowe, all of Owensboro; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Tierney of Chicago.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and after 9 a.m. Friday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville. Prayers will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Tammy Boman

DALE, Ind. - Tammy Boman, 37, of Dale died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Boman; a son, Carl Love Boman; her mother, Karen Taggart; two sisters, Jennifer Mills and Kelly Conneaut; and a brother, Jerry Taggart.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Dale United Methodist Church. Fuller Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

CLOVERPORT - Mary Lillian Roberts, 74, of Cloverport died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was a domestic homemaker in her own home.

Survivors include a son, Josh F. Roberts; two daughters, Lisa Newby and Cindy Thurman; and a brother, Chester DeWitt.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace-Burns Funeral Home in Cloverport. Burial: Cloverport cemetery. Visitation: From 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

William Ray Benton
05/2004/2005

DRAKESBORO - William Ray Benton, 88, of 940 Corum Landing Road, Drakesboro, died at 2:06 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at his home. He was born July 6, 1916, in Ohio County. He was a retired farmer and school bus driver for 30 years and worked for the Muhlenberg County Board of Education. He was a member of Union Chapel General Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a trustee at the church for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Orpha Davenport Benton; and four sisters, Ruby Robinson, Mable Sullivan, Lanora Hammers and Louise Hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Duprey Mefford Benton of Drakesboro; two sons, Terry D. and wife, Shelia Benton, of Browder and Larry R. and wife, Linda Benton, of Drakesboro; three grandchildren, Kevin and wife, Carla Benton, Darrin and wife, Tammy Benton, and Derrick and fiancée, Lindsey Adcock; and four great-grandchildren, Jared Kevin Benton, Justin Alexander Benton, Brook Elizabeth Benton and Samuel Ray Benton.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Union Chapel General Baptist Church, with the Rev. Glendel Harper, assisted by the Rev. Kerry Vincent, officiating. Burial will be in Rochester cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Thursday at Tucker Beechmont Funeral Home. The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rochester cemetery.
