Kathryn Reynolds Wilhoite

Kathryn Reynolds Wilhoite, 75, died at 12:15 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2005, at Blake Medical Center in Florida. She was born in Owensboro and moved to Florida in 1973.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Arnold Wilhoite; a daughter, Katha Julane Wilhoite Grocholski of Roseville, Mich.; three sons, Charles V. Wilhoite of Bradenton, Fla., Arnold Mack Wilhoite of Statesboro, Ga., and Ronald C. Wilhoite of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, Leslie H. Reynolds and wife, Eleanor, of Owensboro.

She was an organ donor and was cremated at Good Earth Crematory on April 22, 2005.

Marie Wheatley

HARDINSBURG - Marie Wheatley, 93, of Hardinsburg died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at Medco Center in Hardinsburg. She was born in Breckinridge County on June 10, 1911, the daughter of the late Thomas and Minnie Rhodes O'Donoghue. Marie was a farmer and homemaker. She was one of the oldest members of St. Romuald Catholic Church, as well as the Altar Society. She was also a member of St. Pius Tenth Praise Ministry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Wheatley, on Jan. 13, 1947; a daughter, Martha Ann Wheatley; a grandson, Justin Warren; a granddaughter, Mary Frances Wheatley; and a stepgrandson, Danny Arnold.

She is survived by five children, Leo Wheatley of Hardinsburg, Joseph A. Wheatley and his wife, Catherine, of Hardinsburg, Angela Mattingly and her husband, Louis, of Louisville, Mary Helen Ratcliff of Celina, Tenn., and Catherine Barnett and her husband, M.G., of Owensboro; a sister, Theresa Hawkins of Vine Grove; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at St. Romuald Catholic Church in Hardinsburg, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mary Fuqua Wells

FALLS OF ROUGH - Mary Fuqua Wells, 86, of Falls of Rough died Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at a daughter's home in Calhoun. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include four children, Ed Wells, Renze Wells, Daisy Halcomb and Bess Curry; and three sisters, Mildred Morris, Sarah Landers and Paradine Keller.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Macedonia cemetery near Vanzant. Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Macedonia cemetery.

William Lester Stewart

William Lester Stewart died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Owensboro. His parents were Robert I. Stewart and Mabel Brown Stewart of Stewart Court, Owensboro. He was a 1933 graduate of Owensboro Senior High and, in December 1941, earned a bachelor of business administration from the University of Minnesota. Capt. Stewart served almost four years as a pilot in the Armed Forces during World War II. Upon discharge in 1945 he was awarded a commercial pilot's license to fly multi-engined aircraft. Capt. Stewart often said that he was very grateful to the U.S. Air Force for teaching him to fly. Along with other duties Capt. Stewart flew transatlantic on both the northern and southern routes. He also test flew B-26 bombers after they were repaired or modified. His treasured memories included flying survivors out of Buchenwald concentration camp.

Bill was of the Baptist faith. He believed so much in the value of education that not only did he work his way through the university, but he provided for Marjorie, resulting in her three degrees. She served as a classroom teacher in Ohio County and was on the faculty at UK, and finally retired after serving as dean of the college of home economics at UK.

Survivors include Marjorie Smock Stewart of Owensboro, whom he married in November 1945; their son, James Monroe Stewart of St. Thomas, Ontario; and two grandsons, Noah John Stewart and Perry William Stewart of London, Ontario.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at Owensboro Memorial Gardens, Christ Chapel, 5050 Kentucky 144, Owensboro. Burial will follow in the Memorial Gardens Field of Honor Veteran's section. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. The family requests any remembrances be made to a favorite charity or to Bridges for Peace, a Christian organization dedicated to helping Israel and the Jewish people, P.O. Box 33145, Tulsa, OK 74153-1145, or to the Marjorie S. Stewart Nontraditional Scholarship Fund, School of Human Environmental Resources, College of Agriculture, N-212 Ag Science Building North, UK, Lexington, KY 40546-0091.

Mary Lillian Roberts

CLOVERPORT - Mary Lillian Roberts, 74, of 502 Murray St., Cloverport, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born on Oct. 10, 1930, in Breckinridge County. She was a domestic homemaker in her own home.

Survivors include a son, Josh F. Roberts of Lewisport; two daughters, Lisa Newby of Hawesville and Cindy Thurman of Owensboro; a brother, Chester DeWitt of Owensboro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Cloverport Baptist Church, with Brother Darrell Crenshaw officiating. Burial will be in Cloverport cemetery at 208 E. Main St. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Barry O. Swift

Barry O. Swift, 43, of 2900 East Yellowstone Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at his home. He was born Feb. 17, 1962, in Daviess County and was a professional barbecue cook. He was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church, a friend and faithful volunteer of VFW Post No. 696 and a past member of Eagles and AMVETS. He enjoyed football, watching the Rams and Catholic High School football, music and entertaining. He graduated from Catholic High School and ITT Technical Institute. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Cromwell "TC" Swift, in 1976, and Betty Jane Wells Swift, in 1969; and a brother, Steve Swift, in 1989.

Survivors include his wife of two years, Lee Ann "Ware" Swift; a son, Josh Mayes of Paducah; four brothers, Mike Swift and his wife, Brenda and Mark Swift and his wife, Robin, all of Owensboro, Scott Swift of Orlando, Fla., and Max Swift and his wife, Dawn, of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Precious Blood Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ed Bradley officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home in Owensboro. Prayers will be said at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Barry Swift Fund.

Elvis D. Rice

Elvis D. Rice, 79, of Maceo was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on July 26, 1925, in Hancock County to the late Dewey and Willia (Masterson) Rice. Elvis retired from Whirlpool Corp. in Evansville after 37 years of service. He was an active member and deacon of Maceo Baptist Church, where he had been a member for more than 40 years. He recently received his 28-years pin for attending Sunday school. He was a member of Hancock County Masonic Lodge No. 115. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the 101st Airborne Division, where he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous campaign ribbons. He loved to hunt rabbits and raised registered beagles. He was also an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bradshaw.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Esther (Newton) Rice; a daughter and son-in-law, Laretta and Larry Bullock of Owensboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and JoAnn Rice of Maceo and Byron and Leslie Rice of Owensboro; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and several cousins.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Mount Eden Baptist Church cemetery in Hancock County. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Maceo Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 57, Maceo, KY 42355.

Hazel Marie (Oglesby) Jackson

Hazel Marie (Oglesby) Jackson, 67, of 1216 Avondale Road, Owensboro, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born Sept. 23, 1937, to the late Aubon Leo and Allie Brooks Oglesby in Henderson. She was a longtime member of Owensboro Christian Church, where she was involved in many ministries of the church. She was a homemaker and Kentucky Colonel and loved her family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Oglesby of Grayville, Ill.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Arthur (Art) Lee Jackson; three sons, Randy and his wife, Jackie Jackson, of Smyrna, Tenn., Larry Jackson of Antioch, Tenn., and Phillip Jackson of Owensboro; a daughter, Karen Posante of Owensboro; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo and his wife, Lorene Oglesby of Houston; a sister, Martha Hagan of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home, with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Owensboro Christian Church Building Fund, 2818 New Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Verna Mae Allen Dukes

GREENVILLE - Verna Mae Allen Dukes, 81, of 675 Ken Lane, Greenville, died Wednesday morning, April 27, 2005, at 9:27 a.m. in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital after several months' illness. She was born April 23, 1924, in Greenville, the daughter of Carl Edward Allen and Hazel Marie Crick Allen. She was a nurse's aide and had worked at Maple Manor and Belle Meade nursing homes before retiring. She was a member of Lead Hill United Methodist Church in Weir and was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Joseph Harold (Tom) Allen, on April 23, 2005, her birthday.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth Dukes of Greenville; two sons, William Keith (Charlotte) Dukes of Greenville and Terry L. (Linda) Dukes of Graham; a daughter, Glenda (Paul) Young of Greenville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty (Olton) Lee of Greenville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, by the Rev. Don Gabbard and the Rev. Tommy Tackett. Burial will be in Cave Spring cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Bruce Embry

Coach Bruce Embry, 63, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Daviess County on June 26, 1941, Mr. Embry was the son of the late Yondell M. Embry and Wannetta Amby Payne Embry. He was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral. Mr. Embry taught at Owensboro Catholic High School from 1968 to 2004. During his tenure at OCHS he taught mythology and English and was the head and assistant boys' basketball coach, head and assistant girls' basketball coach, assistant football coach, golf coach (winning Kentucky Coach of the Year honors), track coach, athletic director, the DARE program sponsor, created the OCHS SMART program, the founder of the OCHS Project Graduation Program, organized flag runs, sponsored the Western Kentucky Leadership Conference, assisted with senior retreats and established the Senior Snow Ball Dinner tradition. He was also the unofficial OCHS matchmaker and always had an open door policy at the school. Mr. Embry had a part in the never-released film titled "Marshall of Windy Hollow." Mr. Embry also enjoyed skeet, trapshooting and sporting clays. He was a state champion in all and competed nationally. Lastly, he was noted for his generosity.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janie Patterson Embry; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angel and Terry Payne, Cynthia and Bruce Galloway and Elizabeth and Rob Burnett, all of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Andrew Payne, Zachary Galloway, Joshua Galloway, Bethany Galloway and Meredith Burnett, all of Owensboro; and countless OCHS students and former students whose lives he touched.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Cathedral, with burial in Resurrection cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. In Iieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Owensboro Catholic High School, Coach Bruce Embry Memorial Fund.

Johnny Franklin Dawson Sr.

Johnny Franklin Dawson Sr., 67, of 7431 Griffith Road, Owensboro, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on March 20, 1938, in Trigg County to the late Henry Lewis Dawson Sr. and Bethel Elizabeth (Chadwick) Dawson. He was an independent insurance agent for 41 years and an ordained minister. He was a member of Sorgho Baptist Church, a Shriner and a member of F&AM No. 130 Masonic Lodge, where he was secretary and a past master. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Stewart; and three brothers, Tom Nat Dawson, Henry Lewis Dawson Jr. and Leroy Dawson.

Survivors include his wife of 47 1/2 years, Violet Norine Dawson; a son, J.D. Dawson Jr. of Stanley; a daughter, Therese Barnett of Stanley; six grandchildren; eight-and-a-half great-grandchildren; seven foster children; 19 foster grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Lee Dawson of Hendron and Homer Dawson of Pembroke; and a sister, Geneva Calhoun of Cadiz.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at James H. Davis Funeral Home chapel in Owensboro. Burial is in Sorgho Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Johnny Dawson Sr. Memorial Fund, c/o James H. Davis Funeral Home, 3009 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 43201.

Homer Dossett

STURGIS - Homer Dossett, 84, of Sturgis died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at his home in rural Sturgis. Mr. Dossett was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and the founder and trailmaster of the annual St. Ambrose Trail Ride. He was a lifelong farmer in Union County.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Clemmie Dossett of Sturgis; three daughters, Barbara Way of Bowling Green, Agnes Mayberry (Steve) of Owensboro and Geraldine Miller (Terry) of Ekron; a son, Dennis Dossett (Stephanie) of Sturgis; two sisters, Jean Hancock and Mary Crowdus, both of Morganfield; 11 grandchildren, Emily Soard, Christy Mayberry, Chad Dossett, Joshua Dossett, Dr. Jason Miller, Matthew Miller, Michelle Parker, Lindsey Mayberry, Benjamin Dossett, Jordan Dossett and Adam Miller; and four great-grandchildren, Maddie Soard, Mia Soard, Ethan Parker and Riley Parker.

Services are at noon today at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Union County, with Father Freddie Byrd, Father Terry Devine and Father Richard Cash officiating. Burial will be in St. Ambrose cemetery in Union County. Visitation is after 9 a.m. today at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ambrose Building Fund or to St. Anthony's Hospice.
