Ezra Green Layne

CENTRAL CITY - Ezra Green Layne, 69, of 302 West Reservoir St., Central City, died Sunday morning, Oct. 9, 2005, at 8:20 a.m. in Muhlenberg Community Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born on Aug. 3, 1936, in Barnshee in Pike County, the son of Green Layne and Bell Woolford Layne. He was a tool and die maker for Harrington & King in Chicago. He retired in 2000 after 27 years. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gerald Ann Lee Layne of Central City; a son, Kent Layne of Pikeville; a stepdaughter, Karen (Armando) Tenorio of Owensboro; three stepsons, Ricky (Sharon) Travis of Burbank, Ill., Terry (Margaret) Travis of Greenville and Johnny (Becky) Travis of Owensboro; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Layne of Pikeville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, morning at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville, by the Rev. Steve Hibbs. Burial will be held in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the funeral home.

Eldred 'Jay' Powell

Eldred "Jay" Powell, 58, of 1315 Ralph Road, Whitesville, passed away on Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at his home. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, and had been attending the Christ Presbyterian Church in Owensboro. He was retired from the National Park Service as a park ranger and also was a United Methodist Church minister. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion Post 9 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a driver for the Disabled American Veterans, had been a certified state service officer since 1996 and was a Shriner clown. He was preceded in death by his father, Eldred Louis Powell Sr.

Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Jeannine Powell; a stepson, George Medling of Miami; his mother, Lela V. Powell of Whitesville; a brother, Bruce Powell of Pittsburgh; and a sister, Venita Joy Howard of Fairborn, Ohio.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Christ Presbyterian Church with burial following in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Military honors will be given by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696 at the graveside.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1374, Owensboro, KY 42302.

Suzanne K. Williams

LOUISVILLE - Suzanne K. Williams, 63, of Louisville passed away on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005. She was a native of Lewiston, N.Y., born at Niagara Falls. She was an RN and a member and Sunday school teacher at Shively Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold D. and Frieda Gill Kaufmann.

She was survived by her husband, George J. Williams; two sons, Edward Lee and Andrew K.; daughters-in-law, Joan and Karla; a brother, Roger Kaufmann and his wife, Jane; three grandchildren, Van and Yvonne Williams and Jordan Brown; and a niece and nephew, Carol and Stephen.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. EST Tuesday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with burial in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. EST today at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for Research, 710 W. Main St., Louisville, KY.

Eldred Rearden

FORDSVILLE - Eldred Rearden, 53, of Reynolds Station died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, at his home. He was born in Ohio County and was retired from Kimballs. He was a member of Newton Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Jason Rearden.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Rearden of Reynolds Station; a son, Eldred Rearden Jr. of Hartford; two grandchildren, Brittany Marie Rearden and Nathan Eldred Rearden, both of Hartford; a brother, Galen Seaton of Fordsville; two sisters, Lois Rearden and Thelma Kincaid, both of Reynolds Station; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Newton Springs Baptist Church, with burial in Easton Community cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church.

Brenda Farmer

HAWESVILLE - Brenda Farmer, 53, of Hawesville died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Scotty Farmer; two daughters, Shirley Simpson and Wendy Hall; a stepson, Joshua Farmer; a stepdaughter, Kimberly Farmer; and her parents, Edward and Betty Warriner.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville. Burial: Blackford Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation: After 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Brenda Farmer Memorial Fund.

Paul W. 'Bill' May
10/09/2005

DUNDEE - Paul W. "Bill" May, 76, of Dundee died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Owensboro, was a state fire instructor for the State of Kentucky and the National Fire Academy in Maryland, was past fire chief of Dundee Volunteer Fire Department and was the first president of the Ohio County Firefighters Association. He was a Kentucky Colonel and served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul William and Lucy Smith May; and one child, Robert Andrew May.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane May; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Jane (Bruce) Chisholm of Owensboro and Polly Ann (Gary) Porter of Hartford; two sons, John Paul May of Beaver Dam and James Stanley (Shannon) May of Hartford; seven grandchildren, Krystal, Kelly, Tiffany, Tammi, Robbie, Leigh Ann and Taylor; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Eloise Bruce of Peoria, Ill.; a niece, Sally; and a nephew, Alan.

He will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew him.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or Parkinson's Association.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Military honors and fireman honors will be at the graveside in Oakwood cemetery in Hartford. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from noon until funeral time Monday at the funeral home.

Vernon Hathaway

GATESVILLE, Texas - Mr. Vernon Hathaway, 83, of Gatesville died on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005, at a Temple, Texas, hospital. Mr. Hathaway was born on Dec. 11, 1921, in Chicago to the late Homer Vernon and Jane Gleed Wells Hathaway. He married Norma Mae Seams. She preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 1994. He worked at Interlake Steel for more than 34 years. He was an Army veteran. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two sisters, Florence Johnson and Effie Vallow.

He is survived by daughters Dawn Clark and husband Glenn of Vine Grove, Jane Terrell and husband Jerry of Utica and Rose Holder of Crockett, Texas; a son, George Hathaway and wife Sue of Gatesville; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Gatesville Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Tim Crosby officiating. Burial will follow at Killeen (Texas) Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 1506 W. Main St., Gatesville, TX 76528.

Brandy Mae Laslie

Brandy Mae Laslie, 22, of Owensboro died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Owensboro Medical Health System. She attended Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Westview and had worked at Kroger.

Survivors include her parents, Lisha and Chuck Martin; a son, Jonathon Stoy White; a sister, Jennifer Laslie; a brother, Cody Martin; and her grandparents, Anna Carman and Bruce and Mary Smith.

Services: Noon today at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg. Burial: Cloverport cemetery. Visitation: After 8:30 a.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions: Brandy Laslie Memorial Fund, c/o of the funeral home.

Joe VanWinkle

Joseph W. VanWinkle, 63, of Owensboro died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at University of Louisville Hospital. He was born in Daviess County to the late Dewey Sr. and Tillie VanWinkle. He was retired from the IBEW Local No. 1701 and was a member of Crabtree Avenue Baptist Church. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed UK basketball, Bob Dylan, NASCAR and bike riding. Joe loved children and gardening. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey Jr., Jim, Robert and Donald VanWinkle; and a sister, Martha West.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jeannette Millay VanWinkle; a son, Richard W. VanWinkle and his wife, Carrie, of Louisville; a daughter, Abby Shepardson of Owensboro; a grandchild, Lindsey Shepardson; three sisters, Helen Onstott and her husband, Raymond, of Philpot, Betty Miller of Owensboro and Patty Fitzgerald and her husband, Bill, of Elizabethtown; three brothers, Bill VanWinkle and his wife, Marilyn, Russell VanWinkle and Phillip VanWinkle and his wife, Martha, all of Owensboro.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Sparks; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Burns Middle School Cross Country and Track Team, 4610 Goetz Drive, Owensboro, KY 42301, or Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, 1517 East 18th St., Owensboro, KY 42303.

Raymond Hartford

BEAVER DAM - Raymond Hartford, 51, of Beaver Dam died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford. He was a mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Dearborn Hartford; six daughters, Dawn Resendes, Ty Clapp, Tracie Hartford, Nicole Hartford, Ashley Hartford and Kristin Hartford; seven sons, Robert Dearborn, Aaron Britton, George Britton, Bobby Hartford, Joshua Dearborn, Matthew Hartford and Tyler Hartford; two sisters; and a brother.

Private services will be later in Massachusetts. Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam is in charge of arrangements.

Terry Lee Bevil

Terry Lee Bevil, 46, of Leitchfield died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at Norton Hospital. He was born July 11, 1959, in Daviess County and was employed by Walker T. Kelly Beehive Co. in Leitchfield. He was a member of Peoples Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, basketball and football. He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Bevil, in 1980.

Survivors include his companion, Ruth Mattingly of Leitchfield; his mother, Beatrice Bevil of Owensboro; two brothers, Roy Cook Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Owensboro and Tim Bevil of Atlanta; and three sisters, Patricia Curtis and her husband, Buddy, of Mooresville, N.C., Dianna Bryant and her husband, Dennis, of Hartford and Tammy Slack and her husband, Danny, of Fordsville.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Chapel of Peace at Rosehill cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today at Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home. The family wishes that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Terry Lee Bevil Memorial Fund, c/o Dianna Bryant, 3212 State Road, Hartford, KY 42347.

HARDINSBURG - Terri Armes-Bartley, 36, of Hardinsburg died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at University Hospital in Louisville. She attended First Apostolic Church of Mellwood.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Bartley; two daughters, Savanna and Amber Armes; her parents, Gene Armes and Mary and Dale Willis; two sisters, Gail Boswell and Tammy Cherry; and two brothers, Eddie and James Armes.
