Martha Nelle Richey
3 December 1998

MADISONVILLE - Martha Nelle Richey, 76, of Madisonville died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville after a lengthy illness. She was born in Paducah, graduated from Central City High School, Bethel College and Georgetown College and received her master's degree from Western Kentucky University. She was a teacher for 22 1/2 years and taught 12 years in the Hopkins County Public School System in Earlington. She was a member of Madisonville First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Hughlan P. Richey; two daughters, Rebekah Richey of Altamonte Springs, Fla., and Kathy Nix of Madisonville; and two grandchildren.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Madisonville First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery in Muhlenberg County. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either the Gideons Society or Habitat for Humanity. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Clifford E. Johnston
4 December 1998

Clifford E. Johnston, 69, of 4548 McIntire Crossing, Owensboro, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Owensboro. He was born in Owensboro, served in the Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart. He graduated from Owensboro High School, where he played basketball, baseball and football, and attended Kentucky Wesleyan College and Brescia College before entering the Army. He retired as a letter carrier from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service and was a lifelong member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Owensboro, where he served in numerous positions. He was also a member of the Traveler's Protective Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS and National Association of Retired Federal Workers. He was a volunteer baseball coach at Highland Elementary School for two years; volunteer at Apollo High School for the Athletic Booster Club; and an umpire for Daviess County Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Wayne Johnston.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Beverly Young Johnston; two daughters, Shannon Rodgers of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Sue Wells of Owensboro; two grandchildren; and a brother, Lowen Johnston of Albuquerque, N.M.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Woodlawn United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1120 Woodlawn Ave., Owensboro, KY 42301. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Hershel Leverne Phillips
4 December 1998

DU QUOIN, Ill. - Hershel Leverne Phillips, 69, of Du Quoin died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Ill. He was born in Christopher, Ill., was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was the owner of Phillips Produce since 1970. He was a member of Du Quoin American Legion and was a country and western musician.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Ann Phillips; three sons, John Phillips and Bill Phillips, both of Du Quoin, and Charles Phillips of Houston; two daughters, Katherine Barr of Owensboro and Mary Dunmyer of Du Quoin; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Phillips of Jonesboro, Ill., Bill Phillips of Burns, Ore., and Pat "Bud" Phillips of Christopher; a sister, Ethel Baul of Houston; a stepbrother, Gary Wiggs of Christopher; a stepsister, Kay Bailor of Christopher; several nephews and nieces; and several cousins.

Services are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Neal-McClure Memorial Chapel in Du Quoin. Burial will be in Mulkeytown (Ill.) cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either Veterans Affairs Hospice or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Jacqueline Frances Deason
4 March 1998

GREENVILLE - Jacqueline Frances Deason, infant daughter of Kenneth Wallace and Teresa Kay Deason of Greenville died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at her home. She was born in Muhlenberg County.

Other survivors include her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Miller of Greenville, Joe Deason of Rockford, Tenn., and Barbara Deason of Hilliard, Fla.; her great-grandparents, Clarence and Clementine Miller and Nancy Deason, all of Greenville; and two brothers, Joe Deason and Jordan Deason, both of Greenville.

Services are at 11 a.m. today at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Greenville. Visitation is after 8:30 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Myrtle Scott
5 December 1998

Myrtle Scott, 95, of Owensboro, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Owensboro. She was born in Logan County and was a restaurant cook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman B. Scott; and a son, Herman B. Scott Jr.

Survivors include a son, Elmer J. Scott of Owensboro; three daughters, Beatrice Cornelius of Owensboro, Margaret Henry of Louisville and Hilda Irish of Ventura, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home in Russellville. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Russellville. Visitation is after 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Denver Hurt
14 January 1999

HARTFORD - Denver Hurt, 88, of Nortonville, formerly of Olaton, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was born in Olaton and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie Lee Blacklock Hurt in 1964; and his second wife, Ida Belle Wilson Hurt.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Lee Hunt of Nortonville; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one nephew.

Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Duke-Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Hartford. Burial will be in Axton cemetery near Olaton. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lena May McPhearson
14 January 1999

BEECHMONT - Lena May McPhearson, 79, of Beechmont died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Greenville. She was born in Muhlenberg County, was a housewife, and was a member of Mud River Union General Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ewin McPhearson; two sons, R.C. Phelps of Jetson and Ebon Phelps Jr. of Morgantown; two daughters, Plina Bell House of Jetson and Ida Mary Blunk of Lexington; two stepsons, Cecil McPhearson of Beechmont and Charles McPhearson of Belton; five stepdaughters, Jonell Drake of Owensboro, Bonnie Cartwright, Hettie Garrett and Brenda Young, all of Belton, and Peggy Beliles of Drakesboro; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 25 stepgrandchildren; and 26 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Smith Funeral Home in Morgantown. Burial will be in Peyton Phelps cemetery in Jetson. Visitation is after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Steven Glenn Sheriff
14 January 1999

GROTON, Conn. - Steven Glenn Sheriff, 47, of Groton, formerly of Owensboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at his home. He was born in Daviess County, was in the National Guard in Owensboro and served in the Navy for six years on the USS Billfish nuclear submarine as a sonar technician. He was a security guard at a nuclear power plant in Waterford, Conn., for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Sheriff; three sons, Steven G. Sheriff Jr. and Clinton Sheriff, both of Groton, and Jeff Sheriff of Owensboro; two daughters, Kim Sheriff of Groton and Christa Sheriff of Louisville; nine grandchildren; his parents, Charles and Dessie Sheriff of Owensboro; his grandmother, Mae Sheriff of Owensboro; three brothers, Terry Sheriff of Louisville and Scott Sheriff and Shane Sheriff, both of Owensboro; two sisters, Melita Smith of Memphis, Tenn., and Cindy Sheriff of Owensboro; several nephews and nieces; and several uncles and aunts.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Liberty Lighthouse Church in Owensboro. Services will be Friday at Dinoto Funeral Home in Mystic, Conn.

Crandoll S. Miles
6 December 1998

FORDSVILLE - Crandoll S. Miles, 82, of Fordsville died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at Ohio County Hospital in Hartford. He was born in Ohio County and was a retired farmer. He retired from LTV Steel Corp. in East Chicago, Ind., and was a member of United Steelworkers Local No. 1011.

Survivors include his wife, Lucilla Miles; two sons, Darrel L. Miles of Narrows and Bruce Eldon Miles of Gary, Ind.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Miles of Griffith, Ind., and William Miles of Highland, Ind.; and several nephews and nieces.

Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Harl Funeral Home in Fordsville. Burial will be in Miles cemetery in Fordsville. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Cleatus Ray Hurt
26 November 1998

Cleatus Ray Hurt, 62, of Owensboro died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Owensboro Mercy Health System. He was born in Vanderburgh County, Ind., and retired from Circle H Trucking, where he was a truck driver. He attended Deliverance Christian Center and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include two sons, Timothy Hurt of Owensboro and Anthony Hurt of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Natalie Haynes of Owensboro; the children's mother, Jane Hurt of Owensboro; eight grandchildren; five brothers, Cecil Hurt of St. Louis, Bill Hurt of Indianapolis, Jack Hurt of Chandler, Ind., Wayne Hurt of Evansville and David Paul Hurt of Newburgh, Ind.; and three sisters, Priscilla Baggett and Urma Chumley, both of Evansville, and Lena Thompson of Fort Branch, Ind.

Services are at 4 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home Chapel in Owensboro. Burial will be in Bates cemetery in Yankeetown, Ind. Visitation is after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Cleatus Ray Hurt Memorial Fund, c/o Glenn Funeral Home, 900 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Memorial contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Jeanette L. Bayless
13 January 1999

AUSTIN, Texas - Jeanette L. Bayless, 59, of Austin died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Rodney Johnston of Austin; a daughter, Jay Lynn Bayless of Austin; one grandchild; three brothers, Ray Jackson, Jerry Jackson and Tony Jackson, all of Owensboro; and three sisters, Rebecca Gardner, Cathy Durbin and Sonia Carlisle, all of Owensboro.

Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Friday at the Memorial Chapel at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas.

John E. Brown
13 January 1999

GREENVILLE - John E. Brown, 58, of Greenville died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at his home. He was born in Muhlenberg County, was a woodworker and was a security guard.

Survivors include a son, Johnny Brown of Louisville; three daughters, Anna Jean Vincent of Graham and Donna Gossett and Sherry Brown, both of Greenville; a stepdaughter, Pam Parker of Lewisburg; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Delis Brown of Greenville; two brothers, Ronnie Brown and Dorris Brown, both of Greenville; and a sister, Barbera Crabtree of Greenville.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Corley Chapel cemetery in Graham.
